hey Night that actually looks pretty good, you want some tips? if youre going to be painting shit other that trains lol you need to stay off the bottom of the page, relying on that paper ending is bad because it teaches you not to finish your letters or give it flow and balance, you have to just go all out if you need to make guide lines do it lightly sketch 2 lines about 2-3 inches apart one over the other like this

and throw your letters in there till you can do it without them, but that roman really does look good the only letter that is really lacking is the O because the widths are inconsistent and shakey looking, another thing pencils looks sketchy, i would do anything in pencil unless its just a sketch. sketch REALLY lightly and go over it with a nice pen like a micron so you get a smooth clean line, i like microns because they dont bleed are very consistent and come in many sizes.... keep working with that and once you get the hang of doing simples like that out in the middle of the page work on your coloring. get at me in a couple days show me some shit and i can give you some more pointers if you want.

Im not completely happy with it, the U is way too big and out of proportion, and the T's arnt quite the same shape, but is this an "OK" style to be practicing, or is it back to the drawing board?

nope, i would honestly buy a caligraphy book at this point, or go to the library or read online, understand what makes a letter R a letter R. i wouldnt mess with bubbly things like that to hard to make look good if youre not a pretty good artist lol making rounded ends is hard to do consistently and evenly, usually they just end up looking disproportionate and ruining the whole thing.

Consistency/uniformity is important on some levels. Study other peoples art and styles and bite if you have to. Contrary to what everyone thinks, every graff writter that isn't from the same school as PJAY and IZ the Wiz has bit off someone or other.

Keep at it man, draw as much as you can and let your creative juices flow. I'm of the type of mind that htinks if you're not an artist, you shouldn't be writtin graff. An artistic side of a writter will seperate the toys from the kings.

i found a marker i like better than prisma...if i knew the name of it i'd post it :lol: all of the labels have worn off, almost immediately. it shouldn't be too hard to find though...they're available at the same stores you get prisma color and they look very similar. chisel tip on one end and two different fine tips on the other...an outliner, and a thin line. very nice marker.

what would you say to someone just starting to get into writing?... ive been sketching for over 12 years trying to do all this complex stuff without learning the basics.... and now i got these bad habits... ive been told that my handstyles suck and i have no structure.... i wanna start over with some simple junk that i can start puttin up on walls... what advice would you give someone just starting up...

start with bubble letters and then do straight letters...when i was learning from a freind he drilled that into my head....its fustrating but you have to do those first to get the basics of the letters...so just have patience

ok i can do that... but is there any tips out there for getting better handstyles... like should i try to build off of a font or something???

yep. start doing simple block letters, pretty much like a basic computer font like arial at size 48. once you get that down start copying cerial boxes and shit that uses straight letters but sort of tweaks them. do this till you can whip out a straight letter easy as hell. go to the handstyle thread for tips with that.

I'm seriously annoyed at my camera. It didn't pick up that the 3D actually had a fade from a dark blue to a light blue (all you see is the light blue) and it made the fade on the letters look terrible. Which makes me very angry. But you get the idea.

Does it say sam? The letters are actually pretty good, except the M isn't too great, but it's still OK. Just clean your shit up and lose the extensions like the one on top of the S because it just makes it look like some other shit letter. Work on proprtion too, like keeping all your letters the same width. For example your S is really thick in some places and then really thin in others. Ttry and get everything about the same width. Your A is perfect though, I love that

I like that you actually did a simple rather than try to do some crazy wildstyle burner.

Your headed in the right direction, but you need to make your lines a little cleaner,
and the actual letters a little straighter(M,N), and more consistent(O).

But other than that, your gettin there, especially if that's your first piece.

And I like your throwie, just make all the letters the same size.
