so connex is on the way out and with this takeover by MTR looming just around the corner (nov 30th) i wonder what this will mean for melbourne.
for those who don't know vic government has had enough of connex and decided to go with the hong kong company MTR and a division of MTR is going to take over connex and call it Metro Trains Melbourne, which i personally like the name of.
info here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metro_Trains_Melbourne
now they say;
The Metro Trains Melbourne fleet will consists of:
* 187 3-car Comeng EMUs (built 1981-1988, refurbished 2000-2003)
* 6 remaining 6-car Hitachi EMUs (built during the 1970s)
* 72 3-car Siemens EMUs (built 2002-2005, purchased by M>Train)
* 58 3-car X'Trapolis EMUs (built by 2002-2004, purchased by Connex Melbourne)
* Sprinter diesel multiple units hired from V/Line. (used for Metro Trains Melbourne services on the unelectrified Stony Point Line)
yay hitachi's!
i'm wondering if any of the current carraiges will be up for sale/getting scraped.
i'm also wondering will connex workers be in danger of losing their jobs (oh the poor workers)
or is it going to be a take over where everything stays the same they just change the colours and logos on the trains/tickets/everything
also metcards are being phased out and we are going to have to use this myki shit.
interesting stuff, i'm kinda excited about it.
thoughts, anything?
