Conrail was a cool railroad to ride with a few exceptions of hot intermodal trains. There were still ol hippies working there up untill the take-over. What happened was that the Feds& ICC had a rule that CSX and NS could only own 10% of Conrail Stock. Sometime during the Clinton Era that changed and a all out war for control of Conrail commenced between CSX,NS and the Unions (who understandbly wanted CSX). Now the CSX side is cool while the NS side not so much.CSX treats its employees with respect and understanding and NS according to my contact Sam Nasca at UTU Albany is very militeristic. "Conrail was willing to let the employees do what they needed to do to get the job done while NS is very work to rule".

despite the higher then normal pay for blue collar work (Conducters Start at 27.00 a hour).

I OWN shares of Berkshire....Berkshire Hathaway A stock is 100,000 a share...but 2 years ago Warren Buffet made B shares which trade at 76.00 a share for the railroad side of the company.
I love BNSF and is my fav railroad out west to ride but those GEICO(Berkshire company) commercials are a annoying as hell..I want to tie up that little lizard on the next westbound...I used to like CSX(also have shares in my 401k )but they are getting bad...Intermodal trains have been tied up for as much as a hour on crew changes that should take 5 min. Theres no excuse for delaying a hot intermodal money train for crews. The van should be there with a fresh crew and not have to get another van to bring back the old crew to the roach motel

Been stairing at the same blank wall for a hour @ the Murry Hill Station of the LIRR....This station NEEDS Graffiti badly. Murruy Hill station is in a pit or a trouth and non rush hour all there is a blank white wall.
Only a few paint overs. The LIRR should get that Facebook Millionare down here and do some charity work. I know I know whats a hobo doing on the cushions..Long Isand does have the New York and Atlantic one train each way via trackage rights on the LIRR from Sunnyside to Greenport but I will be a old man trying to catch that...Perhaps when I get on the other end of this Island I will get it back or I will down about 5 Long Island Ice Teas and walk off a long peir....

Heard from Stretch and Burlington the other day. They were stuck in Dallas. They missed Amory Railroad Festival. Stretch tried to make it by hitching, but couldn't do it. He was disappointed, but hey, that's life on the bum. It's hard to hit a precise date for a festival or gathering or whatever when you're on foot. You have to start way early and allow for all of life's little misadventures.

spokane and havre are the only sketchy spots as far as im concerned. careful in havre they are pretty on top of shit there.

just rode from arkansas back to houston a couple days ago and miraculousy didnt get busted by the workers who saw us run across the road and tracks to get on during the day time. the train started pulling out and they stopped it to search for us but couldnt find us. we could hear them running up and down climbing on ladders and shit we were sweating bullets. pig in a bucket THANK YOU. i wasnt missing that train and spending another night getting mauled by mosquitos. NOPE.

Used to be an OLD SCHOOL BULL in PINE BLUFF, I cant recollect his name, But He Would Buy You A HAMBER SANDWITCH at that Coloured Cook Shack by the Yard Entering In, YOU COULD SEE JUST HOW TO CATCH OUT easy from that joint, HE DID NOT HAVE TO TELL YOU...but he never wrote nothing but my Name & Hot Springs. I've always been well-treated by KCS workers. Back in the day, the Southern Pacific guys were real decent people too, but when they got absorbed by UP, things got tougher. Worst of all of them, I think, are the Norfolk Southern special agents. I will still ride NS trains, but I am extremely careful.

WAShINGTON - The North American freight railroad industry is entering a new
Golden Age, with growing demand from shippers powering net profits and a
projected record $15 billion in capital investment planned for 2011 in renewed
rails, rail cars, smart computer and software transportation technology and
cleaner, more efficient locomotives. The largest Class I U.S. freight railroads
will invest an estimated $12 billion on capital improvements this year, burying
the previous record capital expenditure total of $10.7 billion recorded in 2010,
the year in which the rail industry burst with energy as the North American
economic recovery soared out of the record slowdown doldrums of the 2008-2009
recession.

The Association of American Railroads, the leading U.S. freight railroad trade
association, made the U.S. capital investment projection on the cumulative
public statements of Class I U.S. freight railroads made themselves and their
own internal projections.

The Fort Worth, TX-based BNSF Railway - since last year a wholly owned unit of
Berkshire-Hathaway, Inc., the giant investing vehicle of billionaire investor
Warren E. Buffett of Omaha, NB - has reported it will execute a 2011 capital
budget of $3.5 billion in 2011, surpassing that of the U.S.' largest freight
railroad, Union Pacific Railroad. Omaha-based UP recently said it projected it
plans to invest $3.2 billion in heavy duty plant and equipment to meet growing
demands for rail freight service from industry.

Meanwhile, the two powerhouse eastern U.S. freight railroads - Jacksonville,
FL-based CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Railway - have so far talked
about spending about $4 billion between them on their rail systems. Kansas City
Southern, is the smallest of the Class I railroads, but also has been investing
heavily to strategically enhance its capacity and efficiency in linking its U.S.
railroads with its wholly owned Kansas City Southern de Mexico SA unit, which
now accounts for 70% of the company's total revenues. Mexico recently reported
robust 5.5% annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expansion, its fastest since
2000, and top banks in Mexico project at least +4% annual GDP growth for Mexico
in each of 2011 and 2012.

The AAR projection does not take into account spending by major rail lines in
Canada and Mexico, which are increasingly integrated into a nearly seamless
continental rail network with the U.S. lines. But Canada's dominant two
railroads - historically east-west focused - are now fully vested and invested
in USA and Mexico connections and railroad lines. Canadian National and Canadian
Pacific railroads have said they intend to invest some $2.8 billion total on
2011 plant and equipment capacity expansion. Industry experts speculate that as
much as $750 million U.S. of the Canadian firms' investments will be deployed in
their U.S. operations. When analyzed together, including the Canadian railroads
CN and CP, the top seven North American freight railroads will easily achieve
$15 billion injected into their systems on the continent, assuring the ability
to reap what industry experts expect to be continued robust demand for rail
services.

ANALYSIS: The American Association of Railroads recently reported that U.S. rail
firms will add additional 10,000 or more workers in 2011. The industry's top
leaders, recognizing that the railroad industry has one of the
highest-average-age employee base, must make plans to recruit an estimated
70,000-plus professionals to replace a longtime industry workforce headed into
Baby Boomer Era retirement.

Union Pacific was exemplary in investing during the severe freight shipment
downturn of fall 2008 through 2009 to maintain both experienced personnel and
keep its rolling stock and stored locomotives in place in preparation for a fast
economic recovery, a caution other railroads also echoed. UP leaders said in
press interviews that very big UP layoffs and equipment elimination that
happened during the 2001 recession's aftermath left the firm and other railroads
unable to capitalize on the powerful surge in freight shipments when the U.S.
economy bounced back. UP and railroad industry leaders were careful to be ready
to meet the powerful surge of 2010 and did so, recording some of their best ever
net profit and total revenues years in railroad history, and that despite heavy
capital investments in renewing and modernizing plant and personnel.

The North American freight railroad industry continued investments in their
systems right through the bottom of the 2008-2009 recession, even though the
industry had set a three-year record pace before 2011. The American Association
of Railroads recorded Class I Freight Railroad capital spending at $10.2 billion
in 2008, more than $1 billion from a year earlier. During the severe freight
shipment downturn in 2009, top rail firms totaled $9.9 billion in investments.
In 2010, Class I Railroads completed an impressive $10.7 billion in capital
investments.

Nevertheless, the AAR reported recently that rail industry group says 20.2% of
North American rail cars remain idle. Railcar owners in the U.S., Canada and
Mexico took 12,457 units out of storage in February, leaving the continent's
idled fleet at 20.2% of all railcars available for service. The trade group
estimated the total rail car fleet as of March 1 at 1.52 million railcars, down
from 1.58 million on July 1, 2009, which was when the industry's car storage
level peaked in the recession at 502,853 units. The AAR said some 60,000 older
rail cars were returned to the scrap heap as thousands of new cars begin to come
in. An estimated 137,000 rail cars have been taken from storage sheds and
returned to service since the bottom of the recession.

On March 1, the AAR said all types of railcar owners - equipment leasing firms,
railroads and freight shippers - had 306,316 cars still parked in rail yards and
on sidings throughout North America. That compares with 318,773 on Feb. 1. The
number of idled cars - or cars that had not carried a revenue-generating load
for at least 60 days -- had shrunk steadily from July 2009 until Jan. 1, 2011,
when 316,271 were stored.

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett's targeting of the rail industry in his
self-described "all-in" bet on the U.S. economic recovery by buying BNSF for $26
billion has been seconded by his fellow former richest American Bill Gates. A
majority of Gates' personal wealth now estimated by Forbes Magazine as $50
billion is outside of his original fortune in Microsoft Corp. stock holdings. On
March 8, Gates personal investment vehicle, invested another $8 to increase his
stake in the rail giant, Gates' firm said in a statement. As a result, Gates now
owns directly or controls 10% of Canada's No. 1 CN Railway. Gates first bought
shares in CN in 2000 and has gradually increased his stake in the company since
then.
