excellent thread!
you really did it up!
how did you get the beers? when I was in japan the only beer vending machine I found ( don't ask how I failed so hard) was by the shrine in Hiroshima and you needed an ID card to get the beers to prove your age.
The sake Cup looks dope as well would make a nice set!
would prop but can't
looks good all your wanderings through yoyogi park and stuff like that.
It's pretty nice to get on trains that don't have the windows scribed to fuck eh?
watch out for upskirting!!!
holy fuckamoly

I would like to do Asia but I'm scurred of the language barrier.
Don't fear this.
If you go semi-prepared it will only be a minor inconvenience in most places in Asia.
Semi-prepared = having a map and/or all addresses and phone numbers written down to hand to cab drivers or for asking someone to point you in the right direction.
I've gotten around Korea, Japan, The Philippines, Thailand & Hong Kong like this.
You'd also be surprised at how many of those ricey bastards speak enough English to help you.
Plus, the worst thing that could happen is you get lost for a while before you find somebody that speaks enough English to help you.
You won't starve to death.
In Tokyo, my friends and I went to some hole in the wall bar that was punk themed.
The dudes spoke no English, but were happy we liked Japanese hardcore bands.
They told us (charades as fuck) about some place that had live music.
We tried to find it going by the name and vague directions a few days later.
Couldn't find it.
Went back to their bar to ask again.
They sent this girl that was chilling at the bar as our guide to this bar and when we got there she just hi-fived us and bowed and took off back to the bar.
Inside there was an all girl ska band dressed in kimonos.
Great night.
Cool story, br0.
TL; DR--------I am ignorant to Asian languages and Asians are usually helpful and/or speak more English than you'd expect.
Plus, even if you end up learning some of the language in any country as far as speaking it, your listening comprehension is going to be wack as fuck until you get used to how they speak, etc...just go.
My love for you is ticking clock, BERSERKER!
Would you like to suck my cock, BERSERKER!
My love for you is like a truck, BERSERKER!
Would you like to making fuck, BERSERKER!

nice thread. brought back hella memories. i did the same thing acouple years back, solo for the most part. no real idea of what to expect, no idea of the language. but shit just works. you figure the basics and it gets you by. good idea having a journal type blog thing on here for dudes interested in travelling there. before i went i remember jumping on the tokyo thread reading simliar stories of dudes experiences, but having the flicks to acompany that shows you first hand how cool the place is.. seen myself in some of them pics too!!! shit runs out there which is the best part. 10 points on making the effort to put this together... hope it inspires dudes to get out there. peace
Great flicks. I'm surprised because that ERAS blockletter has been there for the longest. I lived on the outskirts of Tokyo in the early 2000's, and remember this around 2003-2004. If I remember this is near Tower Records (on your way from the JR station). Unless he has just maintained it or repainted it over the years. But a lot of shit runs for a long time in Tokyo and doesn't get buffed.
"We realized that hamsters are actually mice with afros. People think they're pets, and have them in their houses, but the reality is, a hamster, a gerbil, a guinea pig - all those are, is rats with fur coats on. It's the same thing. You wanna act like it's not what it is... If you think I'm joking, just let him loose in your house and see if he doesn't burrow in to the wall, and start doing rat-like things." - Charlie Murphy

I don't know about Hiroshima but Tokyo and Kyoto and the surrounding cities all have vending machines either by Asahi or Kirin that have beers in them. They're not on every corner but every few machines you find a beer one. Either that or Lawsons and 7/11. Lawsons is the shit!
Yeah man, got on a train to work today and sat for 40 minutes stuck in a tunnel, with sub par rap letters everywhere. Reminder of how shit the Sydney rail system is. Don't get me wrong, I love insides but our trains are just scummy.
Plus, even if you end up learning some of the language in any country as far as speaking it, your listening comprehension is going to be wack as fuck until you get used to how they speak, etc...just go.
So much truth, I tried to learn some basics in the weeks before I left, but it was mostly useless once I got there. Reading it from a book is no help unless you have someone to speak it with.
After the first week though I had become used to most of it, even if I didn't have direct translations I had an idea of what things meant.
bump this shit again when you post the rest in untitled please... because ill forget... & not unlike steven tyler, i dont wanna miss a thing
Haha. Will do man, I'll be posting a bunch of scrap photos in here anyway from all the film. I know I've got some more graff flicks and I think some photos of Style Wars playing in da clubz.

I might repost some of these in the photography thread later, but I'm gonna post a bit of the film stuff in here too, since people are enjoying it. Thanks guys.
First roll was pretty trashy, but they were just mindless snaps. http://joelwestworth.wordpress.com/
I'm gonna update some proper posts on there about the trip as I go through more photos, check it out if you want. There's a link to my Flickr and under construction portfolio in the About page if you're interested.

A few more, I probably won't even post many in the Photography thread yet. I'm probably going to do a zine with a mate who was over there at the same time.
Picking the best ones out, so here's a few other snaps. I've dropped off all my colour stuff now which I'll have back next Tuesday.
You can check out some of the better un-posted colour and black and white on my website, just put up 2 new sets. http://www.joelwestworth.com/
Also I'll be doing a split zine with my man Samoh who was over in Japan at the same time so I'll post in the Photography thread when that shit's up.
Check him out too his photos are ill. http://www.sam-stephenson.com/index.php
Think that's all covered now, thanks for checking it out and props to everyone else who did some dope travel threads too, good reading

AWESOME THREAD
props for being brave enough to walk into a foreign country like badass and take pictures and fuck aboot. and it don't get more foreign than Tokyo in my opinion.
did you check out PACHINKO? isn't that like super crazy slot machines?
i bet its like the electronic poker/slot machines at every paki gas station... they pay out in store credit. but they look hella cool and are super involved for a slot machine.
AND WHATS WITH THE SURGICAL MASKS? my next drawing will be of a hot asian wearing mostly a surgical mask. maybe a zombie theme.
This allowed me to draw my own conclusions that a writer, particularly a hardcore, experienced one, is more likely to be an intelligent male from a single parent family who didn’t do well academically, is not involved in sports or extracurricular activities and has antisocial and illegal behaviour.

Yeah Pachinko is crazy, they love them some slot machines, every fucking block has at least one. Even if they're really hidden. From what someone told me it's like pinball, you buy a bunch of balls and put them in and play until they're gone. Gambling directly is illegal so yeah they give you a form of credit and you get either get a giant teddy bear or something, or you go to another street and trade your credit for real money.
When you walk past and the door opens it's just a rush of air that stinks like ciggies, loud electronic noise and lights. I was too shook to go inside and walk around hahah. I went into one and tried to get some photos but some dude wasn't happy so I just left it.
The masks are pretty cool, if you get a cold you just wear a mask so you don't sneeze on people, never experienced so much mutual respect. Japanese peoples is on another level
One thing I forgot to get flicks of were the cool little restaurants with ticket machines. I probably posted about it but it's an awesome way to eat. You just pop your money in, pick a meal and give the ticket to the guy, then it's done.
No idea what most of it meant but guessing was fun, sometimes you end up with tempura squid type things or there's big ramen dishes with everything you want. And real cheap

why did the animal (in one of the pet stores i'm assuming, from your pics) cost 400,000 yen
and a camera was like 38,000
and soup is 200 yen
whats going on with their money... WHY IS THAT ANIMAL SO FUCKING EXPENSIVE

looks like someone changed that ERAS to say ANUS at some point...
If trouble doesn't come to find you, you have to go looking for it.
When you do things right, people won't be sure if you've done anything at all.

how fucking good are gr1s. I've got two. A mate recently picked one up in Tokyo for next to nothing. I reckon anything less than 300 is pretty good. whats with the holga though?
I FUCKING LOVE JAPAN. so many good times.
And schnitzel what do you mean you couldn't get vending machine beer? I seem to remember there being a vending machine for booze on every corner without needing a card.

Yeah they're so sick, I'm looking out for another if it's cheap just as a backup. I'd like a GR1v so I don't have to keep scratching off the DX codes on film to push it. Either way they rule. Which holga?

Yeah i've got a gr1v hey... I don't even know what you mean by the scratching dx codes thing?
between a gr1v, and a hexar rf with a summicron c 40mm and 35mm/1.4 voightlander nokton, and my g10 I am totally covered for any camera use i would ever require. its taken a few years to get this bunch together..DONE !!
