I was listening to Howard Stern as that shit was happeneing. Howard basically canceled his show and dedicated it to covering the story as it was unfolding. I remember thinking that this is 'the big one" that the government was waiting for to use as an excuse to pass all kinds of Orwellian laws and turn America into a police state in the name of "security". I guess I was right. I wish I was wrong.
Also I remember Hank the Angry Dwarf died like a day or two prior and that was the big news right before 911.

I know I'm about 5 years late on this thread, but when I heard about 9/11 I was on my way to a job and I stopped at a bank. I walked into the bank (I wasn't listening to the news on my car radio) and half not paying attention to the clerks demeanor, I asked her how she was doing and she was like "not very good at all" so I gave her a concerned look and asked "why?" She said "we're at war!" I said "with who?" expecting a solid answer like a country or something but she just said "I don't know!" with this terrified expression on her face. That was after the first plane but before the second. I jumped back into my car and started driving listening to the radio then I heard the report of the second plane. I stopped at a gas station and watched those planes hit over and over about 25 times.
I had a real sinking feeling when I saw those planes hit, I guess like everyone else, but I was a new muslim and people were already talking that "kill the raghead sandnigger" stuff where I was that day.
I honestly knew in my gut that it was wrong, but I needed to hear it from a knowledgable source because a lot of ignorant muslims were saying that america finally got what it deserved for the oppression the muslims had been suffering before 911 , but that didn't settle with me. It didn't smell right to me. Only until the major scholars in the muslim countries started to condemn the attacks did all the uneducated muslims here start to change their tune.
It's amazing how much peoples eyes opened after those attacks. People wanted answers. My family members were calling me asking me why? ...why would someone do that? etc.
I didn't know what to say. Except to say it was wrong and that Islam doesnt allow this sort of thing etc. But , people wanted answers. non muslims showed up at mosques 100% more than they did before 911. Everyone wanted a Quran. A huge number of people embraced islaam after 911, I guess just out of curiousity, wanting to know , then finding what they didnt expect. It was an amazing time to witness ,especially being a muslim. People were very alive shortly after 911 , if not anything else , they were alive and awake , and then evenually all the hype died down, something else moved into the limelight, and it seemed like everyone went back to sleep and empty slogans prevailed once again.
I pray that we wake up again and I hope that something will bring that concern back to us, the concern and desire to be good, decent individuals, and I hope it doesn't take another disaster to do it.

I was in the navy at the time, stationed overseas in Japan. I was in the Internet center on base during the attacks, checking e-mail, browsing, etc... It was nighttime over there... it was 9:46pm on Tuesday night in Japan when the first plane hit. I didn't hear about the news til around 10:30pm or so -- someone on the computer nearby was like "hey a plane just hit the world trade center" (even though this was about 45 minutes after it happened, but the websites were slow). I remember all the news websites being hard as fuck to get on, obviously due to the tragedy. Everyone thought it was an accident. Then someone else said another plane hit -- I thought they must've misread something. Then when more and more people in the computer room said planes hit the Pentagon, and then those rumors about Air Force One, the Washington Mall, and Camp David all being targeted -- then we knew something was up. I remember hearing a female outside the room talking to someone saying the "world trade center is gone." I figured she was mistaken, because I was thinking the WTC was still standing; and afterwards the survivors would be rescued and it would take years to repair the building. Then I finally was able to log on to msnbc.com. The first image I saw was a plume of smoke and with the words "south tower of the WTC collapses." This hadn't been updated, because I think the north tower had already collapsed by that time too. Everyone in the internet room, including myself, began to run to a nearby room which had flatscreen TV's hanging against the wall... when we got there, we saw the images of lower Manhattan engulfed in smoke. Then they showed replays of both towers collapsing. And of course the Pentagon on fire. Then everyone started heading back to their ships. When I got on my ship, I went down into my berthing (living quarters), and into the lounge, where other people were watching the news on CNN. They kept showing replays of the planes hitting the buildings. I remember the words "America Under Attack" at the bottom. After a while, my division officer comes down into the berthing, asking someone to help get the patrol boat lowered into the water, and to grab shotguns, 9 mills, and the mounted machine guns. Of course, I doubt that ever happened. Over the summer of 2001 it was in the news that bin Laden was planning to hit U.S. interests, but it was generally thought that it would probably be a military installation overseas or an embassy overseas.

i was watching some morning news. some lady was on the street talking to a crowd, then right over her right shoulder...you could see it. it was comparable to those people who saw jfk getting shot. i called some friends and told them to be prepared for curfews, police in apc's, etc. one friend came over as the second tower was collapsing. we watched it and kinda sat there in silence.
that was one fucked up day, regardless of who did what.

WORKING RECEIVING SOME GIRL AT WORK WAS TELLING EVERYONE TO CHECK THE TV..
WE ALL HEADED TO THE BREAKROOM...
ALL IN SHOCK.. THE RADIO ANNOUNCED IT...
MY MANAGER GOT ALL SHOOK...
AFTER AN HOUR OF DEBATING.. WE ALL GOT TO GO HOME, AS DOWNTOWN WAS GETTING CLEARED OUT AND TOURISTS AS WELL AS OTHERS WERE TAKING PIC'S OF ALL THE SKYCRAPERS HERE..
I ENDED UP STAYING IN THE MIDDLE OF DOWNTOWN SETTLING AN ARGUMENT WITH A FRIEND..
WEIRD DAY.

I was in psychology class then we were told to turn the TV's on. My school being ghetto we turned it on and saw the second tower getting hit through the snow on the TV... We were let out early and I went home. I will admit I cried when I saw the people jumping out of the windows...I felt the need to paint... I went to my school and painted ahuge american flag on the rock in front... it was like 2 oclock in the morning and I remember seeing all these helicopters and military jets in the sky it was crazy I didnt do any grafitish type stuff just the american flag. It was nice because I went back to school and people were really happy and talked about it. I felt asthough it boosted morale at the school. That thursday our town paper came out and it was on the front page...I felt I did my part...
