You seem quite cynical about Askew's work- Who do you see in that Askew piece? You have to say that its pretty much inovative and original (I haven't seen any reproductions of that style of yet.)
And hey- you cant knock Webs, his shit is locked...

SCIEN and KLOR 123KLAN.

They're art and grafik design has been all over print publications in recent times. check out their website and i think you will agree - the whole look and feel of the above is theres. STRAIGHT UP.
you can bite it but can't deny it! WEBS is a real nice peice but again -have a look at the 123KLAN webiste and you will see what we are all talking about. You gotta understand - we saw what askew was like when he first came to melbourne - he was on Loomits and puzles jock hard then jumped onto everyone else that he brought to NZ....
AND before you think we're having a go at him- we're not - hes probs the best bwriter to come out of NZ and hes def got nice art skills. We're just commenting on his borrowed styles and thats shit wouldn't be accepted here thats all.

Interesting...It's funny you think that Scien and klor are my influence here because that couldn't be further from the truth...At the same time I can respect your comparrison and can read the positive in with the negative in your post. I would actually like to get my take on this across too as I dont think you're totally correct in everything you've said.

I've been painting for 10 years, but I'm young..I would honestly say that I agree that heaps of my earlier work was obviously influenced and I also had the great honour of working directly with many of the artists I most looked up to on many occaisons. All that aside, I just travelled to Europe recently and really discussed my direction with a lot of my mentors there..It was disheartening and inspiring at the same time..It made me question my direction thus far and re-assess my new direction...

The thing is, I've been working in Graphic design etc for about 6 years and survive off painting work and freelance design..Pretty much every Hip Hop Flyer in Auckland and more recently album artwork is done by me...I really feel that I am a graphic designer that uses paint as my medium..So now my work reflects that.. I like muted colours..I like Type and Also use predominatly roller paints and brush for my walls now..Mainly because another factor people don't consider when they look at our work here in nZ is that we are one of the most Isolated countries in the world, making good paints relatively innaccessable and expensive..Also we have a very early history but no consistant role models and history...Until we saw Hype Magazine and the internet, basically we still only knew Subay art..thats even in the mid 90's...

Inventions I feel I have rightly made in the 3D technique are: The Mutiple casings and hollow letters...I still haven't seen anybody do this but me...Also the new graphic version of my 3d pieces still keeps this tradition..Plus my actual letter forms have evolved slowly over the years from my plain silver letter style..The same shapes but evolved over time.

I respect that you have made a fairly informed analysis but in reality, there is more to the story. Of course if you are saying that I am more of a technician than an inventor, I would probably agree that my strengths are more in that department..Cos I have moved fluidly between simple styles, throwups, tags, wild styles, comic style characters, photo realism, whole wall work, illustration, design etc....

Artists that need more recognition for pushing Graffiti into new directions:

maclaim Crew www.maclaim.de

ECB www.guerillagraphics.de (A true inovator of graphic style who never uses a computer to design his work)

wow123 www.artcrimes/badwow123.htm

Also the Kaos Design guys from Style File mag are fuckin amazing...

Peace..

I might be incredibly wasted and in a bad mood, but it's really refreshing to hear someone stand up for themselves on this site. I've been a big ffan oif your's for a long time askew and it makes me happy to see you standing up for what you believe in. Props to you from across the ocean and you've got an ally here whenever you need it.

Synthesizing space, figure, time, movements interlocking, weaving in and out, identity and style converge and what follows is the fusion. Graffiti is free from synergy because it is pure synergy.

That IS refreshing to read. makes me look at your art a little differently now having some background on it all. BUMPITYBUMP for takin the time to explain where you are at and where you are comeing from. maybe it is a big conincindence with the SCIEN and KLOR grafik design elements in your latest wall above. you would have to agree if you checked out their site for the similarities in edging and shapes though. Maybe its a grafik designers style or a style circulating in grafik design circles or maybe im drinkinmg way too much burben and Yeah BUMP BUMP for that guy WOW thats for sure

Yeah I know Kasino and Dmote both well...I think Kasino's angle with the hollow thing was more like a hollow block buster..And that is definitely his invention..

To explain what I was actually trying to achieve with my hollow casings was this: If you turned a simple or wild piece into a 3D piece and then shifted all the elements around for effect..ie; If the out line and fill were two diffrent elements that could be pulled apart and even shifted at times to cut through each other..I've had this called "Cookie Cutters" by many people...I dunno if I've exactly achieved what I'm going for but yeah...That was the idea behind it...

Anyway, cheers for the dialogue..

happy to be conversing with you for real. im understanding more and more about it so thats a gtood thing even if im pissed as a fart right now.
um kasino yeah he didn't invent the hollow letters he got that from a new york writer and built on it. he said that in a interview he did. i think wane cod or sent / noah tfp. im surprised to hear you are friends with dmote very surprised he was here recently in the shop talking lets just quite negatively about you being in his crew SUK and must be open season if they are letting everyone in but then he talks alot of shit. we're waiting for him to openly admit PARIS DMA taught him everything he know but lets not get into that guy and keep it positive keep going strong mate

i gotta say i seen a flick of some piece you did in a meuseum...it said something like zeuab or something like that, i know it started with a "z" and from that day on i absolutly loved your stuff..that hollow letter, cookie cuter what ever you wanna call it....i love it, shit i wish i thought of it i love it so much, keep doing what your doing, im surprised your not more "popular" than you are, in my eyes your right up there with other 3d writers (i.e. totem2, daim, just to name a few)

Once again, thanks heaps for all the comments, positive, constructive...Etc..It's cool to have a dialogue with the world and believe me that's something we need more here in NZ...

I've only just turned 24 and been painting for about 10 years now..I still feel I have a lot of growing and experiences to have..For example, I spent the last 2 years focused on productions, but I also feel that something of the raw street side of things has been missing so right now I'm focusing on that as well..Just for my own satisfaction..Plus it's been a miserable winter here and unfortunately paintings been slow..Anyway..maybe in the next few weeks I'll have some new stuff to post and look forward to the comments..

to go along with that question, do you use roller paint for your 3d pieces as well? or just the flat panel style ones?

the cookie cutter style has been done before but no to the way he pushes it and bends them to flow with the letters, shit blows my mind away, and to work and incorporate throwups into burners although done before, never to the extent his done them in..

burner burner burner!

Wish I had...Just only got to Europe for the first time recently..It blew my mind..I want to go to the US and South America some time in the next year or two...Work is hard out here..

We do a magazine called "Disrupt..The reason I've been on here a bit lately is cos' I have barely left my house in over a week while finishing our third issue..It will be available through Tower Records in North America, A few stores in Australia, and Hopefully in Europe through MZEE and At the Trash Mark store in Dortmund...It's an interesting insight into the NZ scene..

There haven't been any trains in these past few issues cos' we are saving them for the next issue which will be strictly NZ trains..But that's how few get done here...
