In my opinion I believe that the solution to virtually eradicating "terrorism" (as we know it as being Islamic extremists against Westernized society), we'd have to attack the root of the problem.

Yes, military and law enforcement action, along with financial actions against the sources that fund terror, does help deter terrorism. i.e. bombing al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan, arresting senior al Qaeda leaders, and the freezing of known terrorists accounts and the "cover" organizations that support them. However at the same time this helps fuel terrorism.

But the root to what causes terrorism should be confronted. There are MANY causes, but I believe the main reason why the United States and the Western allies have become a target are. I will list them in importance from what I feel is greatest to least.

1. The establishment of Israel in the Middle East by Westernized governments shortly after WWII.
2. The continued support and backing of Israel by the United States and her allies.
3. U.S. troops and other allies that use the "Holy Land" for bases, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, and other Muslim nations. Many Muslims see this as an agressive occupation of their land.
4. Agression against Iraq for years, along with the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan.
5. The general Westernized influence in much of the Middle East, including the general greed for oil. Oil = $$, and $$ is the root of all evil.

To reverse the top 5 would not be an easy task, and #1 & #2 would be almost impossible. We couldn't just tell Israel to pack their bags and we couldn't abandon them either.

Palestine. But I hear different shit from both sides. Some say that when the United Nations created Israel after WWII, to give Jews a safe-haven and a nation after Hitler committed the Holocaust against them, that the Israel wasn't really completely occupied by the Palestinians.

If I remember correctly, Palestine was part of a European colony, Britain I believe and probably some others. So this land was technically "unused" and therefore given to the Jews. That's just the view of those who support Israel.

I really don't know what to believe. I believe a little from both sides. And I think my feelings represent the current social state of that region, since they seem undecided as well. They can't seem to compromise and reach one common goal. That's why it's such a quagmire over there. Will it ever be decided? Who knows?

All I know is that it ain't gonna be decided anytime soon, with the assasination of the Hamas founder leader. Hamas have now responded by marking Prime Minister Ariel Sharon himself for death via assasination. If they were to kill Sharon, it would only erupt with Israeli hatred and will basically put the nation into a state of all-out-war. I'm talking about the killing of Palestinian officials including Arafat and the destruction of just about everything in Palestine.

I support a free nation of Palestine but I don't support Hamas and their terrorist tactics. They say they're not terrorists but are in a state of war fighting an illegal "occupation". Their view to me is legit, but then they target mostly civilians. Their argument is that Israeli soldiers kill civilians as well. The difference is that Israeli soldiers don't technically target civilians, but they target Hamas, Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, Islamic Jihad, and other terrorist groups. The civilians are mostly collateral damage.

It's too difficult a situation to try and figure out. Only history will tell what happens.

so maybe i'm an absolute wingnut, but why not make israel and palestine the same country? sure, it would probably segregate itself to a certain degree, but that way both sides get unlimited access to the "holy land" that they are fighting over. the economies of the two countries are invariably linked, and many citizens of one work in the other. it is a very small area without geographic barriers and already has decent government agencies set up (at least on one side...). absorbing palestine into the israeli state and seperating church and state in their government seems like it would work to me. yes, there will be violence. yes, there will be bloodshed. but when a generation of jewish children has grown up going to schools with palestinian kids and vice versa, it makes all the difference. humans are afraid of what they don't know. putting a fucking wall and two bureaucracies between people will not help matters.

but hey, as it has been pointed out countless times already, i don't live there so my opinion doesn't matter. however, my tax dollars are being funneled into a powder keg presently and i'd like to keep brainstorming ideas until the world is a safer place. but that's just me.

What do you mean? Technically they are the same country. Palestine is just a sovereign state within the nation of Israel. Think of it like an Indian Reservation in America.

But as far as completely making it one country? Like merge it and call it Israel-Palestine like the Czech Republic and Slovakia were once Czechoslovakia? Can you seriously say that you could picture an Israeli-Palestinian government with everyone equally running the country? Palestinians and Israelis both running for Prime Minister? That to doesn't sound like it'll ever happen.

Or what about the option of making Palestine an independent nation? That will only curb some of the violence and, because the Palestinians see the rest of Israel as their land too. They want no compromise. The Jews would be a little more willing to let them have their own country, but that would probably mean the eradication of most Jewish settlements within Palestine itself.

It's a complicated situation over there.

I strongly agree with what misteraven posted. In my eyes both sides are guilty of mass killings and if sides where switched it would be the same situation.I dont think any portion of land giving or taking would do enough to defuse the fighting. I believe the key to ending this whole thing is for Israel to convince its neighbors that it is not a threat. How? Rebuild Palestine. Then get a really really good PR guy.

One of the reasons I believe that the conflict is never ending is because neighboring Arab countries benefit from having an "angry/desperate" Palestine. It is their only way of getting Israel-the threat, out of the region. Palestine's militias don't have enough money to constantly fight Israel so they recieve military aide and propaganda from their neighbors who help fuel the fighting. If you stop/bloke the negative aide and replace it with "positive aide"(whatever that is) you reduce the spread of militias and gain the trust of the people.


Another problem that is prolonging the situation is the economic differences between the two regions as Misterraven said.
If Palestine became a progressive/liberal nation people would focus more on construction than destruction. (hence terrorists keep blasting construction sites and sabatoging shit all over Iraq) If they are building schools and roads they would have little time to riot or focus on desperate violent acts. This is the samr reason why they have prison schools and workshops. If a prisoner is doing something constructive with his time he wont have time to think about how to get at the guards or flip out if someone stepped on his shoe.

well there is my 2 cents. would elaborate a little more but tired sleepy got a paper due and mice are running around in my ceiling. so in a nutshell my solution is to give Palestine a Ricki Lake makeover and shit will be straight. sure there will still be a little hatred from past blood shed but peace and prosperity heals old wounds. It happens around the world all the time especially in African countries with long tribal/civil wars.
