Dr. Revolt / “It’s Alive” -  Past and Present

This article was posted by Haze 2 years, 2 months, 2 weeks, 7 hours, 20 minutes ago.

It’s been a lil while since I last saw my dude this summer,
but I noticed the good Dr. Revolt is having an art show in Brooklyn this weekend,
together with the illustrious Marc Bode, Stan 153, and Jean 13,
so I figured I’d give it some light along with a few pics and illustrations that I happened to come across lately too…

With both of our origins coming out of the upper west side and what eventually became the RTW crew,
Revolt and I shared many a drink, smoke and late night, plus a few good bombing missions back in the 80’s…
So with that spirit in mind, here are a few choice graff pics from back in time,
plus a few “Revographic” illustrations I recently dug out of my archives :

I think the first insides shot above is from the IRT line in 1980, maybe 81 max…
most likely caught in the 207th St. “Ghost Yard”.
( it’s pretty easy to date because there is no “Dr.” before his name yet,
and my e hasn’t grown even close to it’s eventual full swirl yet )

this next shot below is from just another two man bombing mission…looks like early 83 to me.
judging by the other throw ups, I’d say this was an RR / BMT flat we caught at City Hall.
( I suppose it could also be an IRT , hard to say from this distance. )

the next piece is an invite we collaborated on for our homegirl Lysa Cooper’s nightclub in the late 80’s…
I created the type and composition and the Dr. produced the sexy illustrations…
which is something he can pretty much do well with his eyes closed.
( look Ma, no mac, no computer…
and no paycheck either, haha…this one was just for fun. and ok, maybe a free drink or three too )

this next image is an illustration Revolt did as a t-shirt graphic for my brand back in the late 90’s,
which I loved but never ended up producing because I just didn’t trust basic silkscreen to do it any justice ;
the city, exploding trains, graffiti, a spray painting chase scene with cops and robbers,
cars, helicopters, motorcycles, pimps, players, guns, kung fu, and multi racial females…all in full blended color….
what more could you ask for ?!  ( I gotta get this beauty framed one of these days too. )

and finally, on some real grass roots, way way way back ish…
here’s a doorway from our old hood on I believe W. 86th St. in the late 70’s :
it plays host to early proto Revolt tags, along with yours truly SE-3,
plus a selection of other upper west side, soul artist / the rebels ( pre-RTW ) writers, including :
Crunch, SIE-1 ( RIP ), Coca 82, War-1, and Kep.

so there you go, them’s were the days…
but hey, so are these too ;
and check out what the man called Dr. Revolt + Co. are up to these days at the Urban Folk Art Gallery this friday night :
