Then 2 Now

As I was looking through some pics from earlier this month down in Miami,
it sunk in just how long I have been doing one particular simple style excersize :
it was 1972 when I did my first fat cap outline above on the wall inside Central Park,
and by the time I did the second piece below on the Lower East Side in 1980,
I was well on my way to a lifestyle that included having a can of spray paint in my hand at least a few times a week throughout that era.
Time has a funny way of playing tricks on you when you relive moments through photos,
and I realized it’s been a solid 30 years between that night and the day I did this next piece in Miami a few weeks ago :
2010 has been the first year I even picked up a can of spray paint again since the late 90’s,
somehow always preferring to consider that one part of the game where I hung up my cleats after the golden age of the New York trains.
But I have to admit I’ve had almost too much fun running around with a can of aerosol again a couple of times now,
both in LA this summer, plus at Primary Flight and on the streets of Wynwood during Art Basel.
Along with a growing appreciation of all the great work people are pulling off with spray paint these days,
it also reinforced something pretty essential to me :
that when it comes to the simple act of writing your name on a wall for the pure rush and pleasure of it ;
I think it’s fair to say that the game has changed in more ways than we could have ever imagined over all these years…
but then again, at the same time, maybe not so much.
