Travis Barker x The Cool KIds / Travis x A-Trak
“Jump Down”, Travis Barker’s first collabo single with The Cool Kids off his upcoming solo LP was released today,
featuring the album cover artwork that he commissioned me to design for it this summer…
Prior to working on this project with TB,
my man A-Trak hit me up last winter to design the logo for the new collabo project he was working on with Travis called; Travis X A-Trak.
After a long time away from working primarily in the “music business”, it felt good to do some identity work based on an audio concept again,
besides the fact that it was a nice way to punctuate a growing friendship with A-Trak and his fam over the last few years too.
So when Travis also reached out to me himself for more design work,
I was still psyched to keep it moving in the music world again.
We started by building a little back and forth by email,
then I jetted to LA for a few days so we could vibe on everything a little more in person too.
After properly twisting one up together,
we had a good session in his studio listening to some of the tracks and kicking around some of the preliminary sketches I had brought with me,
and I left with a better sense of which styles he was feeling the most for the next round of development and final presentation.
In the end, outside of the design gigs themselves,
both Travis and A-Trak impressed me not only with their own work ethics,
but with their passion for other mediums and a clear understanding of the arc of history that informs their work in the present tense too.
I was left with a sense that both individuals are artists who’s stars continue to rise
not simply because they are extremely skilled with their weapons of choice,
but also because they are fully conscious of the cultural moments in which they live and thrive,
in a world where being the right person in the right place at the right time is almost never an accident anymore.
so, I’m happy to make a contribution to all that whenever possible,
much respect and success to both camps and projects as they continue to develop…
