Last month, Casio opened their new G-Shock NY flagship store in Soho.
The store also includes a second floor gallery space,
where I have created another installation of archival work from my brand history…

Here’s a quick look at the installation now, which will remain up for a full season through February.
Our current collaboration watch model has also been available at this store,
along with other assorted special releases, some of which are only available at this retail location.

For more info and a look back at the store’s grand opening, here are a few more links to peep too :

The complete Holiday 2012 collection I designed for Nike is now out and available at their 21 Mercer St. store…

The collection is based on a series of 12 hand style designs I produced for Nike,

I am presenting everything now in it’s most basic black and white,
all designs are also available in a range of other garment and print colors :

I was blessed this year to become one of the “Flagbearers” for New Era caps,
and we are also releasing the cap collection and video I created with them this Friday at their Noho Flagship store….

The “Flagbearer” campaign is being released in various stages and layouts in both print and online,
including a NY Jets cap version which was released today to coincide with the start of the NFL season :

The cap collection includes two different models,
a Haze Brand 9FIFTY Snap-Back featuring my hand style star,
plus a 59FIFTY fitted which uses my hand style treatment of the original New Era logo.

The Haze signature model comes in my time tested Black, White and Gray,
as well as a nod to MJ in Red, Black and White.
It is also being released in special color ways in-store on the east and west coasts,
with tributes to some of their respective local sports team colors :

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,
so I finally managed to steal a little personal time to just bone out and enjoy one of my favorite past times,
playing with cars and driving fast…

Last weekend we rounded up some of the BK, Bronx and Queens crew and headed out to the Mopar Nationals @ Englishtown Dragway in NJ,
bringing not only our race cars, but a few of the police cars that both Lee and I have been collecting and driving for years.
By the end of the day, it turned out that a total of 6 police cars were there,
so we persuaded the track to actually sanction a “Super Trooper Shoot Out”, setting it up with an announcer, trophies and all….

My man CR took over our Gran Fury for the first round of eliminations and cut a good light to move on,
then I ran Lee in the next round and got the win when he went too fast and broke out of his dial in time…

CR then took over again and went on all the way to the final eliminations,
actually winning a bad ass trophy, plaque and sticker for making it to the finals.

I got some nice shots of our man AL and his blown Hemi ‘63 Savoy in the burnout contest too :

A project I have been developing with Nike in honor of the 2012 Olympics opened last friday,
after completing the final installation at their 21 Mercer St. flagship store in Soho…

The first component of the project involved creating a modular painting system, originally based on a flag,
which also took it’s cues from a number of historical symbols from basketball, track and field.
Using 2’ x 2’ individual icons, I created a 8’ x 16’ master painting,
which then breaks down into various configurations both with and without the letters USA.
The original artwork was conceived for use in global retail installations throughout this summer,
with the actual painting intended to be reconfigured site specifically for the window of the 21 Mercer St. store.

Then following up on the original flag concept,
I introduced color with the production of a large hand painted canvas of my take on the American flag.
Then last week I also painted a mural on the store’s main south wall in free flowing india ink,
using a more condensed and imperfect style to create contrast with the other more controlled works.

We also set up stop motion cameras in my studio for 5 days of production,
as well as during the installation of the interior wall painting.
The first video is on rotation now in the Mercer St. store,
and both will be released globally during the course of the olympics soon.

Enjoy :

Let it be said that “Stay High 149” was and will remain one of the greatest and most important graffiti writers of all time :

Nobody, perhaps other than Snake-1, was more influential to me as a writer starting out.
Stay High’s tag with the smoker and halo is among the most original ever,
and there was never a more poetic tag than a 3 tone Uni Wide ” Voice of the Ghetto” on Broadway.
His early straight letter pieces with dot or star fill-ins were some of the very first evolutions beyond just doing simple tags,
and between streets, trains, and buses, he got up all city more than most in his day too.
The red train top to bottom above from “The Faith of Graffiti” remains one of the most golden pieces in my memory of that era.

It was great that he was able to come back and find friendship and support in the graffiti community after he reemerged,
may we continue to celebrate his great style and legacy, and RIP “Stay High” 149.

I was recently asked to create a memorial piece to honor MCA as part of the billboard project currently going on in LA.
The piece just went up yesterday at Santa Monica and Vine, and is the third in a trilogy behind Kaves and Shepard.
I was grateful to be given such a public forum to properly celebrate the life of my friend and collaborator Adam Yauch,
and hope that these memorials will reverberate among the community that continues to mourn his passing.

The Andy Kessler Foundation will be holding a benefit art auction @ Picturefarmpro gallery in Williamsburg this Thursday night….

The Foundation was set up to carry on the spirit and civic minded programs of NY Skate Pioneer Andy Kessler,
who passed away prematurely in a freak surfing accident in 2008.

A number of Andy’s close friends and community have contributed art to help fund the foundation,
and the annual Andy Kessler Day skate jam will also be held this following Saturday at the House of Vans space in Brooklyn

Last Friday was a very heavy day, as the world mourned the passing and great loss of Adam Yauch…

Complex asked me to write a very brief piece that afternoon, which they posted here along with a host of other memorials.

It is hard to sum up the meaning of anyone’s life or work in a few brief paragraphs,
especially someone as truly diverse as Adam was on many levels.
I have so many memories of experiences together with Adam and the Beasties over the years,
from early NY Def Jam days in the ‘80s, our California days in both the ‘80s and ‘90s,
all the way through everyone’s return home to NY decades later.
I also have extensive archives of all the work we did together, both published and unpublished,
which I hope to organize and expand on at much greater length in the future…

But for now, I would just like to say Adam was not only a brilliant artist, but a deep and soulful person through and through.
His loss will continue to reverberate throughout our communities for some time,
and my sincerest condolences and best wishes to his Wife, Daughter and family, as well as to Mike and Adam.

His premature passing may be yet another testamant to the fleeting and fragile quality of life,
but it is also proof positive that one man, along with a few close friends, can radically impact the complexion of his generation,
leaving behind a profound body of work that will be perpetually upheld and appreciated in light of a history that will outlive us all.

Adam Yauch aka MCA aka Nathanial Hornblower…gone but never forgotten…Rest In Peace, Brother.

My man Coltrane recently commissioned me to create a painting in honor of his newborn son Ellington…

I have always considered legacy and what we leave behind as a big part of any artists life mission,
and there is something special about a piece that is guaranteed to be a part of someone else’s life long after one’s own journey.
I especially cherish the works I have by friends who have passed,
and it’s a great notion to think of your father collecting art for you before you are even old enough to be conscious of it.

I had fun doing this piece, as well as the studies for it that are part of the collection of work I included with it…
and I look forward to seeing Ellington grow up into the creative culture that his mom and pops also play a vibrant part in :

My man Erik Foss has curated a group show titled “Nosebleed”, which is opening tomorrow night at his FUSE Gallery on the LES….

The show is an evolution of an idea he had to represent the downtown NY art scene from the early 80s to present,
which is summed up in the following press release by Carlo McCormick :

“Nosebleed takes its name from the prevailing motto of that sensibility, that we wouldn’t go up there (up
being anything north of 14th Street ) because we’d get a nosebleed. It is redolent of all the provincialism that
makes New York City so myopically special, where neighborhoods do matter and where the global view remains
much the same as Saul Steinberg’s classic New Yorker magazine cover, View from 9th Avenue, where the details
of the city end at the Hudson River as the west gapes beyond like an insignificant wasteland. Make that drawing
looking up from Fuse and you’ll see a similar void outside the center of our universe. Downtown may have been
colonized by money and gentrified into something way white and polite, but the attitude persists. These are the
artists of that particular place of mind.”

I have contributed the early magic marker drawing above from 1981 ( when I was living on Avenue A )
and peep the Fuse website here for a full list of participants and more info :

Four years ago I wrote the following piece on the anniversary of what would have been my friend Keith Haring’s 50th birthday :

At the time, it was part of something I had been planning to compile and write for ages,
which finally seemed appropriate for not only the anniversary which it signified,
but also in regard to some of my own perspectives having recently moved back to New York over a decade later after Keith’s passing.

It was also one of the first major blog pieces I ever wrote on the now long defunkt riottt.com,
which I have been meaning to repost again on 12oz at the right time since it disappeared from cyberspace in 2009.
I almost reposted it again last year around the “Art in The Streets” show, as it seemed even more relavent that ever then too,
but there was already enough media buzz surrounding that show that it seemed a waste to just throw it back against the wall for that reason.

When I saw the opening photo above for the first time last year I knew that was my visual cue for the reposting,
and now, with an exhibition of Kieith’s work from 1978 - 1982 opening at none other than the Brooklyn Museum this month,
hopefully this piece, like Keith’s work itself, will continue to be appreciated in the light of history.

Here is the original 50th birthday anniversary piece,
reposted again in what now also happens to be my 50th year, unedited and untouched from back in March 2008 :

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Last Sunday, May 4th, was the 50th anniversary of Keith Haring’s Birthday.

There have been a number of celebrations of his life and work around NY this month,
including a new documentary about his life, the recreation of his historical mural on Houston St.,
a revival of his “party of life” sunday night, and the launch of a new foundation to support the arts
as a collaboration between the Keith Haring Foundation and the (new) New Museum on Bowery.

I also wanted to take this occasion to celebrate his life and work here now;
I have long been meaning to roll up my sleeves and put together a piece about Keith’s continued significance in the modern landscape,
as well as showcase some of the works and artifacts he blessed me with over the years of our friendship.
His birthday presented the perfect time and place to put it into context now, so here goes:

I first met Keith at the monday night meetings and workshops that our crew -
The Soul Artists - held every week at our manhattan storefront in 1980.
The meetings had quickly become notorious throughout the NYC graffiti and alternative art communities,
where what was originally a small group of us from the upper west side that included Ali, Futura, Zephyr, Crunch and myself,
was soon attracting the likes of Keith, Lee, Fab Five Freddy, Jean Michael Basquiat, Dondi, Blade
and countless other artists who would prove influential in reshaping the art world of the times…
not to mention the many journalists and curators like Richard Goldstein, Diego Cortez, and Patti Astor,
who would also play pivotal roles in the movement gaining exposure and coming of age on many levels.

At that time, Keith was still working as a busboy at the night club Danceteria,
while preparing his first major drawing show at White Columns Gallery,
and was just starting to get serious local recognition from his saturation of remarkable chalk drawings on the NY subway stations.

Amidst a group of mainly hard core and competitive graffiti artists,
Keith’s openness and generosity stood out from the start, inviting us all downtown to his upcoming shows,
and also encouraging us to check out Club 57 and the Mudd Club Gallery on White street…
( where Fab 5 and Futura then went on to curate another seminal art show called “Beyond Words” )
Keith quickly proved to be the embodiment of the out of towner who brings something new to the table here in NY;
with a fresh eye and perspective, combined with an innate ability to understand the bigger picture,
he was one of the few outsiders of that era who was clearly influenced by the style and spirit of subway graffiti,
without ever confusing his relationship to or co-opting it into anything less than his own natural progression.
Where Kieth brought a new academic kind of approach to the immediacy he found here on the streets of New York,
I believe we all learned and benefited from some of the conceptual maturity he brought into our community too.
Through Keith, we also met the curator Diego Cortez, who invited us to be in our first major gallery show at P.S.1 called “New York, New Wave”,
where Dondi, Futura, Lee, Pink, Ali, Zephyr, Fab 5 Freddy and I first all showed our paintings alongside the likes of
Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, Keith, Jean Micheal, and a host of other emerging names in the New York art world.

So in my mind - though there were certainly a number of other key players -
Keith was one if the first and most important links for graffiti to the art world below 14th St,
and though he never considered himself a graffiti artist in the traditional sense,
he came to embody the bridge between creating illegal artwork while embracing the fine art world,
effectively balancing graf’s original ethos of free public minded art while still creating
value and significance within the economic structure of the legitimate art market…
no less than pretty much completely on his own terms at every step of the way.

and though it would take so much more time and space than just a blog to really do justice to the significance of his life and work,
there are a few things I wanted to at least share from my own perspective now,
as a friend, as an artist, and as someone who continues to be influenced by and benefit from some of Keith’s contributions:

Keith was the first person who encouraged me to create product,
and told me that if I printed t-shirts and stickers and we could sell them in his brand new “Pop Shop” in Soho.
I then printed my first “Bat Haze” t-shirts and stickers in 1984, which we sold there throughout the 80’s…
Not only was that completely pivotal for me in so many ways,
but Keith was really the first of our generation who truly understood and embraced,
like Warhol before him, the symbiotic relationship between art and product this way :
artist as icon + recognizable style = a fluid marketable identity.
He was so far ahead of the curve of how we all eventually learned to brand ourselves via distributable product + merchandise,
so far ahead of the curve of what is now ingrained in every emerging modern artist’s quest for recognition and market value.
To his credit, he was also never afraid of potentially undermining his value to the elite high art world
by keeping true to the populist notion of low cost / high access art for the masses…
so often putting his money where his mouth was by dedicating so much time and work for free to many worldwide charities and communities.
I have always felt that beyond the scope of his actual body of work, perhaps Keith’s greatest contributions were more about challenging
these barriers between art, commerce and popular culture, and that he deserves more credit than people realize
for paving the way for the modern “artist identity based product” that now saturates the market.

There have been many times along the way since Keith passed that I reflect with mixed feelings on how sorry I am
that he didn’t live to see the way the art, design and product worlds exploded internationally along with hip hop from the 90’s to now…
knowing how excited he would have been about participating in it, also imaging his indelible stamp on “streetwear” as we now know it.
I remember Keith’s excitement when he was opening the pop shop in Tokyo,
and his frustration at having to close it down shortly after because the bootlegging got just so out of control so fast…
I also remember walking down the street in Tokyo in the early 90’s taking it all in,
being sorry I could no longer compare notes and share my successes and struggles there with him too.

I also remember stopping by Keith’s studio one day coming home from class at the School of Visual Arts -
which he had dropped out of the year before I enrolled - and telling him how psyched about my class on “corporate identity” I was…
He looked at me like I was totally crazy, since that world seemed to symbolize everything our movement was trying to stand against at the time.
and though I was able to share the early successes of creating album cover art and starting my design studio with him,
I always felt he never really got to see how the musicians and artists of our generation actually
wrestled the essence of corporate identity back from the establishment in the 90’s…
utilizing the existing models to empower and redefine ourselves in our own marketplace.
again, it was something he would have really been excited about, and I can only imagine his continued contributions over the years.

and for reasons I almost hesitate to put into words now,
I find myself influenced even more by the spirit and power of his work these days than ever.
After years of focusing primarily on the always so planned out worlds of design and production,
I am most drawn again to the quality and immediacy of the kind of line art that can only come from the human hand,
where beauty and emotion is held in a single gesture, and where, like the purest outline of a great graffiti masterpiece or throw up,
there is no substitute for the speed and confidence of total commitment to the moment.
That is Keith’s work all day long, with a personal style and vocabulary that will stand the endless test of time…
and it’s a beautiful thing.

Having buried and honored the passing of many good friends and major influences over the years,
I have always been conscious of the fact that, at least as an artist, in the end,
it often remains very much about what you left behind and the paths you chose along the way.
I well remember the clarity and confidence with which Keith first told me that he had been diagnosed HIV+,
being sure to tell his friends face to face first before going very public with it,
as he planned to embrace his last days as fully, positively and productively as he could,
also being as much a force for change and awareness of what was still a relatively new disease as possible.
In a way, I saw that this awareness of his own mortality gave him a great sense of
peace and accomplishment within his brief and limited journey through all of our lives…
and I guess we should all be so lucky as to depart with the sense of fulfillment that I believe Keith truly felt in the end.

so with all these thoughts and sentiments,
I want to honor the rare and visionary spirit that Keith was, celebrate the life and work of a great friend,
and share a few of the gems from my collection of works and presents from him throughout the golden years of the 80’s…

enjoy:

One of Keith’s first publications, I believe based on the work from his drawing show at White Columns Gallery in 1980.
These really give a taste of the initial development of his “radiant” dog, baby, and human forms :

Keith did countless installations all over the world and this photo really gives such a great sense of his work on interior spaces :

Finally, a piece that kind of sums up a lot of what I tried to put into context at this point in time, with a good story behind it too :

In 1988, I happened to be in LA working on a project with Vision Street Wear
at the same time Keith was also having the opening of a major show at the Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills.
The after party for the show was at Timothy Leary’s house up in the hills on Mulholland Drive, where we all rolled to after the show…
Not only was the party exactly how I might have imagined it - complete with Barbara Leary passing out hash brownies on platters -
but I remember Dr. Leary showing and explaining something to us all on a computer screen that was just way too over my head at the time…
Looking back now, I think it was actually a very early glimpse into the invention of the internet, way before it seemed tangible at all.
Anyway, it was a great party, an honor to meet Timothy Leary on these terms too,
and Keith presented me with this inscribed copy of Dr. Leary’s autobiography shortly after we got back to NY :

This inscription in part reflects many conversations we had about how we both felt
that psychedelic drug use had profoundly opened up our “vision” as artists…
plus, I believe, it was also Keith’s way of projecting his understanding of the progression of great things to come, not only for myself,
but in the radical paradigm shifts that would soon continue to redefine the street level marriages of art, design, fashion and pop culture…
part of an endless timeline in which Keith’s life and work will continue to hold it’s own true meaning, place and value.

I had the opportunity to go see the Knicks at the garden yesterday to witness Linsanity in person…

You have to be deaf and blind to live in New York and not to know about Jeremy Lin by now,
and after seeing him torch Kobe head to head in a last minute shoot out a few weeks ago,
I started understanding it was much more than just another media darling cinderella story…
not only has he come out of nowhere to become the kind of inspirational figure that transcends sport and geography,
but by now he has already put up truly mind blowing stats that will shine in the light of history forever.

Up close and personal it was clear,
not only does dude have the heart and swagger it takes to make it at the highest level of the game,
but he is simply out working and out resulting his opponents in all phases of his position too.
ok, so inevitably not every night will continue to be his night as it has been on this amazing first roll, but believe the hype ;
Lin answered the challenge again yesterday,
putting up 28 points and 14 assists while quarterbacking a win over the reigning champ Mavericks at home,
punctuated by a step up all net three in the face of the league’s best three point shooter Nowitzki,
removing any lingering doubt about his authenticity to the roar of a re-invigorated Madison Square Garden…
the same mecca of New York hoops that I grew up watching Earl, Clyde, Willis and eventual senator Bradley set the city on fire.

Wherever basketball takes it’s unlikely but fitting newly minted superstar Jeremy Lin,
The Knicks, Madison Square Garden and New York City owe him a spiritual debt that will hopefully be repaid with a ring one day,
my hands are still stinging from clapping so long and hard, and it was a memorable afternoon at MSG for this NY sports fan.

#17, another great New York success story, and then some…

My man Michael from La MJC in Paris just dropped off the latest edition of his book series “All Gone”...

The book always presents a nice window into the premier products and collaborations of each past year,
and it’s amazing how much great work is being done out there once you see it all bound together like this.
I also really like the spirit and message behind the forward he wrote for this year’s edition,
which effectively captures where we are now entering yet another exciting period of design culture.

Here’s a peep at the text below and the book is definitely worth adding to your collection, if it’s not already gone….

Known Gallery will be releasing a ltd. edition of my new serigraph tomorrow as part of their new print release program….

I produced this edition with Modern Multiples, who have been in the print game for decades,
working with a long list of artists that includes the stunning new museum quality works by Saber, Chaz and Retna.
They have a policy of working hands on in the studio alongside the artists they support,
and I was blessed with the opportunity to roll through and knock these pieces out while I was in Los Angeles.
