Special Haiti Photo Exhibit: Images from Jeff Antebi, Curated by LACMA’s Edward Robinson, to Benefit International Medical Corps

International Medical Corps and LACMA photography curator Edward Robinson present a special benefit exhibition of works by Jeff Antebi entitled Haiti: Before 1.12.10.

The exhibition will be on view from April 25 to May 9 across the street from LACMA at Creative Photography Workshops (6020 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles 90036).  An opening reception will be held for the public on Saturday, April 24.  In addition, a special evening will be hosted by KCRW’s Garth Trinidad on May 1.

“To view Jeff Antebi’s portraits of Haitians, taken only months before the devastating earthquake, provides valuable insight into the depth and character of Haiti’s people.  The sense of commitment and compassion he brings to bear on his subjects reaffirms photography’s power to inform and inspire, at a time when Haiti’s challenges remain great,” says Edward Robinson, Associate Curator of the Wallis Annenberg Photography Dept. of LACMA and Curator of Antebi’s Haiti: Before 1.12.10.

Proceeds will benefit the Haiti relief, recovery and rebuilding efforts of International Medical Corps, a humanitarian, nonprofit organization which provides medical training and assistance to local populations worldwide.  Since its inception nearly 25 years ago, International Medical Corps’ mission has been consistent: relieve the suffering of those impacted by war, natural disaster and disease, by delivering vital health care services that focus on training. This approach of helping people help themselves is critical to returning devastated populations to self-reliance.
“We are tremendously grateful to LACMA’s Edward Robinson and Jeff Antebi for bringing these images of Haitian people and their lives to the Los Angeles community. Their efforts will go a long way in helping us provide life-saving assistance to Haitians as they work to recover and rebuild,” said Nancy Aossey, President and CEO of International Medical Corps.

Jeff Antebi is a photographer who blends war and conflict with art and journalism.  He tells his stories from a compelling perspective, covering an array of provocative places including elections and war in Afghanistan, despair and chaos in Haiti, brutal drug cartel slayings in Juarez, a bloody insurgency in South Thailand, Brazil’s notorious illegal favela slums, and the living conditions for Roma gypsies in the Casilino 900 refugee camp.  He was the first photographer ever exhibited by the acclaimed StolenSpace Gallery in London, home to Shephard Fairey, D*Face and Pete Fowler, among others.  He’s recently been featured by NPR, Rolling Stone and GOOD Magazine. Antebi is also the founder of Waxploitation, where he developed the careers of multiple Grammy Award winning artists including Gnarls Barkley and Danger Mouse, and more recently the band Broken Bells as well as Dark Night of the Soul, a collaboration between filmmaker David Lynch, Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse.

and coming soon to the Common Ground Gallery in Berlin, ‘Calligraffiti – The Graphic Works of Niels “SHOE” Meulman. Street-edge meets high-end design as artist Niels Meulman explores the contours of words as images in “Calligraffiti” - his hybrid art form which blends calligraphy and graffiti. He presents a wonderful interplay of contrasts with a series of fast phrases and upbeat witticisms in the form of captivating typographic masterpieces. If in Berlin make sure to check it out and cop the book.

Last night I was able to catch Todd James’ excellent exhibition and run into many old friends. One such guy is old school LA writer and artist Devin Flynn who is an animator now with a sick and twisted sense of humor which I appreciate very much. He hit me with a dvd of some of his shows and I would like to share some that are floating are the net. enjoy…

On a recent trip to Paris I was able to link of with Jon One who give me a quick and comical tour of his studio.

Nice video in South Africa by Faith47. Graffiti and lost spaces, another beautiful project by Roman Pybus and Inge Beckmann. Epitaph is an exploration of lost spaces entered through sounds and images to reveal the echoes of empty rooms, flakes of paint, swollen curves, fragile lines, stories hidden in the flat colors broken apart by wood and steel. Rowan Pybus, Faith47 and Inge Beckmann worked closely together to produce this short video piece. This is the third in a series of videos that Faith47 and Rowan Pybus have been working on.

This week in Paris is the 2nd installment of the graffiti and street art auction put on by the Millon Associes and Coronet St. Cyr auction houses. If you are in the area or online get in on the action and cop a new painting for the crib. Artists from the US include GHOST, RIME, T-KID 170, MARE 139, SONIC, COCO 144, TRACY 168, RIFF 170, CYCLE, CES, PINK, EWOK ONE, RISK, KAVES, KING 157, and from Europe artists line CAN 2, NEON, JAY ONE, LOOMIT, BANDO, KONGO, SHOE, ASH, SKKI, TRAN, and so many more. It is crazy!!!
