Considering how exaggeratedly high real estate costs have gotten over the last few years, it’s nice to see there are still alternatives to the million plus dollar shit boxes that sell within the Manhattan real estate market.

MAKING YOUR MARK ON SOCIETY (SMASHING THE JMZ)
No doubt the JMZ comes off as the neglected step child of the MTA family of trains, and always seemed (to me at least), to be the train with the least cosmetic upkeep. I remember back a year or two ago when it seemed like every window on the line had a Smash tag etched into it. Then Les and JA seemed to take notice and leave plenty of evidence of their own that they’d been spending time riding on that line (amongst others). Granted it’s been a minute since I’ve had to ride the JMZ, but damn… I was almost thinking I might step off the train and start seeing B-Boys battling it out at the station. Anyhow, it’s good to see a little bit of old New York still make it’s way to the surface.

HISTORY ACKNOWLEDGED - FAB FIVE FREDDY PRESENTS
I was fortunate to get the opportunity to roll out with Mare 139 on personal invite by Fab Five Freddy, who played host to a private party celebrating the art recently found at a loft in downtown NYC. In case you haven’t already heard, it turns out an art critique used to have a space at 151 Wooster Street that was frequented by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Futura 2000 and Fab Five Freddy way back in the day. Sometime around 1978-79 a wall had been painted by them, and somehow managed to get buried over time. Luckily, the developer of the space recognized the importance of the scrawls his crew uncovered and called in some experts that are now in the process of restoring it. Considering Basquiat passed away in the late 1980’s, it’s not everyday that you come across a new work of his. So, I guess the owner decided to celebrate the find, by calling in Fab Five Freddy to host a party in the space so others could get a chance to see some of the stuff first hand, along with several paintings contributed from private collections displaying other works from the same crew (plus a few of their contemporaries) from about the same period. Though I was disappointed to not see more artists and writers from that period in attendance, (I think Lee was about the only other writer present besides Mare 139 and Freddy), it was a great party considering how quickly they managed to pull it together. I’m not sure if it’ll be opened up for the public, but if you happen to be around Soho, definitely walk by 151 Wooster Street and see if you can sneak up to the second and third floors to peep it.

NY Magazine has yet another great piece detailing the life and style of a downtown local. This time it’s a “Portrait of a New York childhood, in the extreme”. Well worth the read…

Just got a great package from Luis over at Illegal Supply and MTN Colors… Definitely some amazing package art on these limited edition cans they did a little while back. I’d imagine a whole lot of writers thought twice before using these. Here’s a shot of a couple featuring the artwork of Os Gemeos and Mist.

This is kind of a repost, but since I just got my copy, I wanted to say thanks… This book has been a little late hitting the shops in the USA, but if you see it, definitely give it a look. Tons of interviews with heavy hitters in the industry, lots of great photos, and more. Looks like the USA version is out on Chronicle Books and is available on Amazon. Anyhow, shouts to Steven Vogel for including us in this project. (ISBN: 0811860361)
