Allen AKA

New York, New York

It’s with a heavy heart that I report that Crude Oil, also known to his friends as Bernie Perez, passed away yesterday. For those that don’t know, Oiler was one of my best friends and is the man responsible for all the handstyles that have decorated all the various 12ozProphet and Also Known As projects incorporating tags over the years. Though misunderstood by many, he was dearly loved by those few he called friends. Oil wasn’t a very big kid physically, but his big heart and big character towered over most, and it was typical for him to be the center of attention in every room he entered or situation he was a part of. Those that we’re in his company (and weren’t on the receiving end of his beef), often had the pleasure of the one man comedy act that made up his true personality. Anyhow, I got this tragic news while on the road, but will try and honor his memory over the coming weeks by posting pictures I know he was fond of. I also have two posts he wanted me to put on his blog for him, that’ll I’ll handle as soon as I can. In the mean time, I’ll leave you with the picture below, which he’d emailed me the day before he passed away.

It’s my hope that Bernie has finally found the tranquility that always seemed to elude him in life. Rest in peace brother…

He will be missed! The last time we hung out was in NY at the AKA book release party. Ill never forget that day talking to him about the first time we went bombing and destroyed Southwest Senior High School the day before school started (1998) & cracking up at all the stupid things that happen that night. He was definitely a good dude & will be missed. Bogl Risky Business

RIP Bernie. It is sad and tragic news. Bernie was a great guy who I first remember meeting down at the Pro-Am's in Miami. The last time we hung out was at WENT's wedding and we had a chance to go out piecing. He was a good brother and will be missed.

Growing up and doing graffiti in Miami, I immediately learned that OIL was the sickest writer our city had to offer. My best friend ALOT who died when I was in high school, made sure that I followed OIL's work religiously, by taking flicks and getting down with the WH, KBT, FS and EPC crews. My friends and I became the young ones of these crews, straight looking up to the truest legend, Bernie and his posse. As we got older, Bernie became very close with many of my close friends. He tattooed them, mentored them, and most importantly he was a genuine person and amazing friend to them. I only heard the best things about OIL. Unfortunately, I was never able to become close to him, because I moved to NYC during highschool, but his loss was devastating to us all. I give my deepest condolences to his family, Allen, our crews, and everyone who who was privileged to know this great man. Thank you for this post Allen dedicated to this bigger than life legend who will live on forever. R.I.P THE CRUDEST OILER ! -RANSE WH KBT EPC

so many fond memories...hanging out at Pedz at 12yrs asking Scott for free t shirts and eyeballing all the graf mags while looking up to guys like Rage and Sir. Trying to breakdance watching Crazy Legs while listening to Lords of the Underground's "Chief Rocka". Busting our asses hard trying to rail slide flights of stairs at "The Underground" parking garage. My first arrest 3am bombing 79th street with Bus129 not even 13. Trying to sneak into "The Edge" at 14 with Ananta, Matt, Edwin, Alex and crew. We grew up together in the old skool Miami Beach playing Mortal Combat at the Fontainbleau arcade. Driving around in Jeremiah's grandmother's car at 13 - no license - we just "borrowed it" so we could bomb downtown with Depot. Not a worry in the world and we could careless about consequences. Good times...good times. Eventually I moved, and we grew apart. I had not heard of or from Bernie until today. While I am saddened by the loss of a dear old friend, I am comforted by the thought of him finding the peace and tranquility he sought-after. I'm not sure why life makes us do crazy things. But I do know that I am glad our lives crossed paths, and that he has left his mark on us all. BB - we'll be tearing it up there like we did down here. Until then, love you man, check you later... (and no funny stuff like slapping me in my sleep in the meantime either :)

i had never seen such good hands/throwup from a non nyc writer. (cali excluded) this guy definitely can contend for having some of the best tags i have seen. when i was apprenticing at my new job someone had a small stack of his stickers, i was lucky to snatch a couple throwup ones. i didnt stick them anywhere i just kept them locked away with my other little things that i collected. i havent had a chance to check his tattoo work but i would love to see what it looks like. if anything like his graff its classic, clean, and extreme attention to the slightest curves and angles are used to execute a top notch piece of work. right now im going to look at his tattoo work.... and for those of you who thing i dissappeared....I DID.

Never have I met someone with such a great sense of generosity towards his friends and loved ones, from the day I first kicked it with Bernie we clicked from the gecko. He taught me alot about life over the past 5-6 years and showed me nothing but love and a good time, if i was ever down he would always come up with something out of this world ridiculous( like showing up to my boys house wearing nothing but boxers and a gorilla mask making monkey noises)..lol..it was just little things that he would do that made him who he was. Other than those who had "beef" with Bernie I would have to say he was probably the nicest and most understanding person i've ever met in the 23 years i spent on this planet and that is no lie. If i ever needed advice, money,or a place to stay he would be one of the first I called on. Graffiti talk, he was always my favorite artist in miami growing up admiring him, not knowing that i would eventually become a great friend to him. I remember me Ranse, Alot (RIP), Dek, Brizo and a few others would walk around over town and just flick everything we saw and for some reason OIL always inspired me graff wise, just how he influenced so many others HE WAS GRAFFITI. He was kind hearted and a truly genuine human being, a great artist , a little wild at times (in a good way), but what i think really made Bernie was his loyalty towards those he cared for, and its more than an honor to be one of those people... -Rest In Peace BERNIE PEREZ aka BERN MANE aka CRUDE/OIL I love you and you will be missed by many and never forgotten, ill never forget the last thing you told me and ive been living by that, thank you for everything and we will meet once again in a better place..take care of Drex and Thomas up there..love you nigga

I ran into a Oil a couple years back at a basketball game in fountainblue. I was on the other side of this whole beef shit. Even though i wasnt directly linked to enemy crews.. i was linked. Oil was upfront and honest and only wanted honesty back. The minute he found out that i personally wasnt for the beef and didnt really agree with it..he then said that he didnt either. Beef kills..over some fucking graffiti people are going to hospitals.Thankgod nobodys been murdered yet..but its ultimately the next step. Nobodys perfect..I just think there comes a time in Miami Graffiti that we all need to stand back and see exactly what it is that were doing..Were all getting older..It isnt the same running from Police nowadays.People dont want to be switching tags and shit..Beef is escalading and getting more and more dangerous.. writers and expanding there familys with Wives and children..I only hope that this continues to be what Oil joking said to me "bro fucking peace man.." I personally am going to the funeral to remember not only a friend but one of my very own favorite graffiti writers.. Who remembers seeing all the shit in homedepot?? See you all at the funeral. RestInPeace brother.

Before Volume DME it was Scriberock - gone but never forgotten... so many good times we had, 2many 2mention! We started together caused we loved this life & learned from each other everyday, laughed & cried. Stole each other's girlfriends, it was all fair game. Wonderland, The Edge, Fever every week for free - RUSH CREW - we don't play. Guest lists everywhere when we were the young bucks & still underage. People mistook me for him at times, just trying to catch they're fame. Nothing ever came of that cause familia always has each other's back. Buda Blast from the past. Even put a few stores out of business on the beach from the daily racking rituals.... crushed everything, everywhere we went. Grew apart as most do over the years yet still remained close. Last time I saw him was at the AKA party in NYC. He was in line in front of me & wanted to make sure I was getting in early, if I wasn't on the list too. I'm glad we had one last laugh 2gether that night.... Oil 39er!!!!

Please allow me to start by thanking everyone for these kind words from the Perez family. Although I never agreed and even attempted to steer BB away from his love affair with the graffiti life style, I see his work and efforts have not gone unnoticed. Reading all these touching BB stories describing his true character and natural talent helps us coup with this tragedy a bit easier. All of you knew BB for who he really was. Not everyone can be great at what they love but he clearly accomplished nothing short of that. His infectious laugher and genuine personality will be missed by many. My only regret not being able to wrap my arms around that skinny little frame one last time. Again I really can't thank you all enough for being his family when we couldn't, especially Allen for creating this outlet of expression in his memory. You have no idea how much it means to me and our family. Most of all BB appreciates it and is loves every bit of it from up above. I LOVE BB, You’re Cousin Nick I am trying to find out if there is a severe in place in Miami, does anyone know anything? If not I would like to hold one for him.

I started dating Bernie shortly after he moved to Jacksonville. It was his personality, heart, and laugh that won me over. He took me out one night with one of his friends from dade county to show me the ropes on tagging, I looked out for cars while they tagged buildings, and the next day there it was on the news. Bernie packed all his shit in my trunk because he was so nervous he was going to have to dip out of town because people were calling him every five minutes to tell him they saw his shit on the news. Man, we laughed about it forever. Bernie and my dad grew up in the same neighborhood in Miami and would tell each other stories from their past. He was the only ex boyfriend that I actually still spoke with and everytime I look at the numerous tattoos he has given me or when I see one of his tags on the streets here, I'll remember that goofy ass laugh he had and know that by meeting him he enriched my life. sweet benito....
