Bates

Copenhagen, Denmark

This was a freestyle painted in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1996 on my European Mission with Monk SCA/AKB and were fortunate enough to stay with Bates. This was a time when Graffiti was really pure for us and we would have done anything just to be rocking walls. We had no responsibilities, no mortgages, no families, nothing. Not that I would give all that up now but it was surely a very free time in our lives and I would recommend it to anyone in their early 20’s to do. Crazy thing about this day was that we had no motive of transportation, little ends and no guides. Bates had to ask us to leave the night prior because his Mom was a little nervous about us staying there and I couldn’t blame her. We were some dirty, stinky, thug ass Americans sleeping on Bates rug on his hard wood floor. The hospitality was very much appreciated and we had no problem leaving when asked. Bates was one of the nicest, most down to earth, graffiti legends I’ve ever met in my life. This day in particular was very fullfilling graffiti day for us. I don’t recall everything that happened but I can tell you that trooping through the back-woods and city of Denmark showed the true King that Bates was. It was rediculous, every time we would come across an abandoned building or even a park bathroom in the middle of a forest, we would find Bates handywork. The guy was everywhere. It was inspiring and we came home with a whole new appreciation for European Graffiti, it’s artists and the awesome heads that we were fortunate enough to meet over there. They truly had their city locked down. From Subways to Platforms, it was a city on fire. My biggest regret during that trip was not pushing to get some of the writers to take us to hit the Subways out there. Bates had told us that he had asked some members of MOAS if they would take us and they politely declined. I didn’t blame them, we had absolutely no experience hitting them and we would have totally been a liability. Still in the end, one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had in my life. Oh and one more comment on how thick and awesome the paint was over there, known as Quick, we finished our pieces in the rain. It was only a light rain but none the less, it was rain!
