Headed up to Chelsea to see some gallery shows. Went to the new Picasso: Mosqueteros exhibit at the Gagosian Gallery on West 21st street, which is focused on his later works between 1963-1973. Very prolific guy, with some seriously amazing paintings and etchings all presented in a gallery setting rather than the typical museum approach - some walls are almost crowded with his work, contrasting, I would say, how Picasso is often presented with one painting to a wall, with a solitary reverence. Here the work is being presented brute force. Very worth seeing. Quirky highlights include the interesting framing choices made by the various pieces’ owners, as well as Picasso’s attention to toes and fingers in many of the works. The show is up until June 6th, so if you’re in New York, go see it and feel what it’s like to have million-dollar paintings surrounding you at all angles. Mildly related: what it feels like to have million-dollar paintings NOT surrounding you.
