BAD FRIDAY…
See, Friday is traditionally the day a man recieves his pay. He comes home with a little extra pep in his step, singin’ some fly Johnny Kemp tune. You can’t tell him shit; he’s got the groceries. Maybe he grabs a little knick-knack or bric-a-brac for the kids, just a little cheap plastic Chinese something or other, but it makes the shorties scream in delight and tear up the house like they had too much Cookie Crisp Vanilla Wafer Flavor. Maybe he got some flowers from the Korean grocer for his girl, but the way she looks at him says; no flowers necessary, he’s good tonight.

But when you wake up early on a Friday to the sound of your girl on the cell beefing with Optimum cause your Triple-Play is done off like the Philadelphia Phillies and your cable box wont even give you the time of day…
When your banging on the bottom of the Bustelo can, but aint nothing else coming out…
Then when it dawns on you you can’t even shoot someone an e-mail to politely inquire about the status of your invoice, because Optimum got ALL your systems lockdown …
Na Good Friday.

Today call me William Money, a man of notoriously vicious and intemperate disposition.

So I recently got bit by the motorcycle bug (well a little while ago) but I finally got around to getting my license and just bought my first bike. A 75 Yamaha XS650 for those who care. Stock. Wrong season for a newbie in New York, I know. But I’m doing a lot of reading and lurking on motorcycle blogs, getting ideas. Most likely I’ll do a little cafe inspired customizations. Keep it more or less stock. But damn there are some nice bikes out there. I recently came across 4Q Conditioning aout of Oakland, and this little dudes bobber. Pretty damn inspiring. Good work Pops.

Here you go… There is a tale behind this one, too. A little history for ya:
What we’re gonna do right here is go back, way back, back into time.
When the only people that existed were troglodytes…cave men…
cave women…Neanderthal…troglodytes. Let’s take the average
cave man at home, listening to his stereo. Sometimes he’d get up,
try to do his thing. He’d begin to move, something like this:
“Dance…dance”. When he got tired of dancing alone, he’d look
in the mirror: “Gotta find a woman gotta find a woman gotta find a
woman gotta find a woman”. He’d go down to the lake where all the
woman would be swimming or washing clothes or something. He’d look
around and just reach in and grab one. “Come here…come here”.
He’d grab her by the hair. You can’t do that today, fellas, cause
it might come off. You’d have a piece of hair in your hand and she’d
be swimming away from you (ha-ha). This one woman just lay there,
wet and frightened. He said: “Move…move”. She got up. She was a
big woman. BIG woman. Her name was Bertha. Bertha Butt. She was one
of the Butt sisters. He didn’t care. He looked up at her and said:
“Sock it to me sock it to me sock it to me sock it to me sock it to me
sock it to me sock it to me sock it to me!”. She looked down on him.
She was ready to crush him, but she began to like him. She said :
“I’ll sock it to ya, Daddy”. He said: “Wha?”. She said :
“I’ll sock it to ya, Daddy”. You know what he said? He started it way
back then. I ain’t gonna lie to you. When she said:
“I’ll sock it to ya, Daddy” he said “Right on! Right on! Hotpants!
Hotpants! Ugh…ugh…ugh”.
The party was jumpin’ when Bertha got off o’ her stump,
The whistles were blowin’ and everybody did the “Bump”.
But all the time Bertha had been workin’ on her goodie,
Now folks call it “The Bertha Butt Boogie”.
When Bertha Butt did her goodie,
She started “The Bertha Butt Boogie”.
No question.
When Bertha got movin’ her hips were hummin’ in the wind,
The ground started shakin’ - no grass grew where she’d been!
The music was poppin’, the crowd had formed a ring,
Her sisters yelled, “Boogie, Bertha, do your thing!”.
Uh, for your information, Bertha had three sisters,
Betty Butt, Bella Butt and Bathsheba Butt.
When Bertha Butt did her goodie,
She started “The Bertha Butt Boogie”.
I said no question.
Hey, Leroy, get away from that woman!
The boy’ll never learn!
Uh-oh, here comes the Troglodyte!
Troglodyte: “Come here, sock it to me!”
Bertha stood back and yelled, “Betty, Bella, Bathsheba!”
And the Butt Sisters backed her up when she yelled, “I need ya!”.
The Troglodyte, Leroy, Luther and the Butt Sisters all knew
That “The Bertha Butt Boogie” was now the thing to do.
When Bertha Butt did her goodie,
She started “The Bertha Butt Boogie”.
No question.
Bertha: “I’ll sock it ya, daddy!”
Troglodyte: “Me like, me like! Come here, woman, woman!”
Leroy: “Yo’ mama, I’m calling you, man!”
Troglodyte: “Yeah - the Boogie!”

The Swedish car company hired blind painter Esref Armagan to depict the car, which won’t be fully revealed until 2010 and is described by Volvo’s design director Peter Horbury as having “a much more dynamic and sculpted form than any previous Volvo.”

I grew up with an English teacher as a Mom, and an industrial designer for a Dad. They were both part-time comedians in their own way as well. I suppose no matter how much you try to carve out your own path in life, you really are a product of your parents influence. I remember my Dad teaching me how to draw in perspective when I was pretty young using the trench scene in Star Wars as the subject. And I got it! He had a good aesthetic sense, passing it along to me in so many little ways, maybe without even knowing it. Here’s a furniture set he designed in the early 70’s in Racine, Wisconsin. I still sit on this couch at my apartment today in Chinatown. I’ve had it since I moved out on my own some 15 years ago, it’s part of me and it’s traveled with me from apartment to apartment. I can’t get rid of it, even if I’ve wanted to at times, same way I can’t ever really separate who I’ve become today from what I learned in the past from my Mom and Dad. Love you guys.

London to Paris: Ted by Geezer

Grace came over from London to show her “London to Paris” film that documented our crew ride from London to Paris last summer at the WNW space. I’m definitely too close to it to see it objectively, but the film just got me missing my month long Euro vacation. Having never been to London or Paris, it was amazing on a lot of different levels for me. At the end of the day, our ride was not about “fixed gear” bikes, although thats what most of us rode. Our ride wasn’t about some super-human physical accomplishment, most semi-serious cyclists could have done it. Our ride was about meeting new friends, seeing new places, having a laugh and of course, causing some harmless trouble. Ted absolutely held it down: always in the front and always the first to crack a beer during a stop. Ted is one of those dudes who just does. A proper bloke’s bloke with a strength and endurance (at the bar or on his bike) far beyond anyone I’ve ever met before. Here’s Ted cracking a Guiness at a stop between London and New Haven, looking like some crazed Russian bodybuilder about to arm wrestle you. Ted’s the real deal.
