THE BIG BREAK DANCE CONTEST

This article was posted by Bates 1 month, 3 weeks, 5 days, 23 hours, 34 minutes ago.

NYC: As we ramp up for next month’s big RBMA/ego trip Filmmatic hip-hop documentary film night, we’ll be screening another rarely publicly screened hip-hop film next week at the Maysles Cinema in Harlem. The Big Break Dance Contest is a very cool, largely forgotten early ’80s TV special in which NYC b-boy crews competed for a chance to appear in the film Beat Street and other prizes. The screening takes place on Thursday, March 28th, and Duce Martinez of the Dynamic Breakers, Kim-a-Kazi of the Dynamic Dolls and Loose Joint of the Fantastic Duo/Elite Force – all of whom appear in the film – will be in attendance for the post-film Q&A.

Maysles Cinema: Originally aired on New York’s WABC in 1983, The Big Break Dance Contest documents a Tri-State wide b-boying competition at world-renowned NYC nightclub The Roxy. The prize: $2500, an appearance on music video program New York Hot Tracks and a role in the film Beat Street. Hosted by actress Leslie Uggams and WKTU radio legend Carlos DeJesus, produced by Larry Rickel and featuring an oddball crew of celebrity judges (e.g. footballer Hershel Walker, soap opera stars Debbi Morgan and Darnell Williams and New York Knick legend Earl “The Pearl” Monroe amongst them), it’s a highly entertaining time capsule of early ’80s pop culture. But beyond the headspins, windmills and electric boogie maneuvers (provided by dance crews like the Magnificent Force, Uptown Express, the Fantastic Duo, the Flash Dancers, Larry Watson and Jason Twigg, the Heartbreakers, and the Dynamic Breakers), it’s a reverential celebration of hip-hop at one of its early high points of global influence. A brief video package featuring Afrika Bambaataa that precedes the compeititon touts hip-hop as, “The first youth culture since the ’60s [to] put a premium on individual imagination.” And it don’t stop…

WHAT: The Big Break Dance Contest screening with guests Duce Martinez (Dynamic Breakers), Kim-a-Kazi (Dynamic Dolls) & Loose Joint (Fantastic Duo/Elite Force)
WHERE: Maysles Cinema, 343 Lenox Ave. (b/t 127th & 128th Streets), NYC 10027
WHEN: Thursday, March 28, 2013, 7:30pm

ENDLESS PERSPECTIVES 3: DOES IN BASEL

This article was posted by Bates 1 month, 3 weeks, 5 days, 23 hours, 37 minutes ago.

Part 3: Basel - Endless Perspectives from Digitaldoes on Vimeo.

Third destination was undoubtedly Basel, a five hour drive away from the south of Holland. Does’s first visit in 2006 left a deep impression when † Dare gave him a guided tour through the layered tunnel system and the famous Basel line. To this day the Basel line remains an important memorial site and a big drawing card for writers around the world who like to admire the original and sometimes ancient works of other artists from all over the world. Keeping in this atmosphere, Does arranged for a good spot near the trackside to set up and paint his canvasses. Despite Stephan Polman’s BBQ food poisoning, who spent a few days in hospital, this trip was incredible.
Paris is up next weekend. Get ready for it!

SOLO EXHIBITION BY DOES
48 Easey St, Collingwood
