My Piecebook coauthor Sacha Jenkins and I are hosting a Piecebook Battle in Paris, France this Saturday July 18th 2009 at 2:00pm. Our event is a part of The Cartier Foundation’s on going exhibit Ne Dans La Rue (Born in the streets).

Devoted to graffiti and street art, the exhibition Born in the Streets—Graffiti will bring to light the extraordinary expansion of an artistic movement that developed in the streets of New York in the early 1970s to rapidly become a world-wide phenomenon.
Today, graffiti has entered the cultural mainstream, crossing over to the realms of studio art, design and advertising. Yet despite its immense popularity, this essentially illegal activity continues to evolve at the periphery of the contemporary art world,
its origins and evolution little-known to the general public. The exhibition at the Fondation Cartier attempts to sketch the general contours of a subject that is vast and complex, encompassing many different ideas, media and movements across its boundaries.

Featured artists:

Seen, Charlie Ahern, Jon One, Delta, Barry McGee, Vitché, Quik, Koor, Toxic, Co Co 144, Alan Ket, Maripol,  Basco Vazko, Olivier Kosta-Théphaine, Nug, Part 1, Evan Roth, Boris Tellegen, Gérard Zlotykamien, L’Association Le MUR, Cripta,
Manfred Kerchheimer, Paris Joao & Roberto Wainer

It is with great sorrow I announce the passing of Mike Martin aka IZ The Wiz TMB. I’ve been told that IZ collapsed at his brother’s home
in Florida at around 3:00am Wednesday morning. He was rushed to the hospital, eventually succumbing to heart failure.

I’ve often said my 2 childhood hero’s were Muhammad Ali and IZ The Wiz. In my lifetime no one comes even close to accomplishing what
he’s done on trains. Back in 1984 I had the pleasure of meeting IZ for the first time at a Graffiti Fashion show at the Danceteria
in NYC. Needles to say I was in absolute awe.

This photo of IZ with Sizer Newave was taken that same night.

I considered IZ a friend and over the years he has been beyond generous to me, contributing photos, art and illustrations to my various print
endeavors. IZ epitomized the term “Graffiti Legend” but yet remained a truly humble soul. Mike I am fortunate to have known you, you will be
sorely missed. Rest in peace brother…

While digging through some things I have in storage I came across 4 shoe boxes full of (unpeeled) promo stickers, mostly from the
early - mid 90’s. Unfortunately the lighting in the storage facility wasn’t so great, I also didn’t have time to shoot everything and was
only able to snap what I could with the camera on my phone. That a side, looking at these images brings me back to a time when new
music (specifically hip-hop) was still exciting to me…
