One of the few new books I’m looking forward to reading:
“Graffiti Kings: New York City Mass Transit Art of the 1970s”, (Abrams) by Jack Stewart.
Previously unpublished photographs and interviews. 1st hand accounts from graffiti
pioneers Taki 183, Blade 1, Phase 2… as well as the city officials who saw the writers
as public menaces and their art as vandalism.

A very welcomed addition to the puzzle. A much needed book to the archival of the most important period in Style Writing and graff in general. A must have for any writer or collection, add to this Tag Town by Martha Cooper which is amazing as well. As I often state- “The history of Art is always correcting itself”, for all those that claim more than their share in this game let these archives set the record straight. Props to the old school pioneers without them I would only be Carlos not Mare139.

Thanks for sharing this. Seems like it’s based on his 1989 NYU doctoral thesis. Will be stoked to finally see the images in color.

not impressed at all. I love the pix but how can Mr.Stewart not even include any RTW or TNB in the late 70’s section. Typical at this point. He doesnt even list RTW by its correct name…typical..great pix of some great writers but incomplete historic material. He even leaves the E out of Z_phyr.
