I recently saw this movie called Vigilante from 1983...this movie was primarily filmed in Greenpoint and has lots of vintage neighborhood graffiti in it, (mainly the TKC crew). Capitalizing on the Bronson/Deathwish movies this is like a poor man version of Deathwish 1, but is worth the watch if you like seeing old footage of NY/BK in particular. Veteran B movie stars Robert Forster and Fred Williamson keep it moving blasting at fools and administering beatdowns with their boys at a steady pace...These are stills from a scene were Fred Williamson is chasing a drug dealer through the upper decks of the pool in Macarren park. PG comes off right in the middle of the action, even a couple of Deak tags as well.

Italian street artist BLU is one of the most prolific and original artists I have ever met. His ability to improvise on such a large scale reminds me of Keith Haring. Clearly he has been influenced by him but has taken it to a whole other level of execution. Ive never seen anything like this at such a scale and proliferation since the days of Keith Haring. He would have been awe struck too. Peep his site- http://www.blublu.org/</F>

This month is the 40th anniversary of the general strike (10 millions workers and students) and the Paris riots( 20’000 students) that shut down France for more than a month in May 1968 and almost collapsed the General De Gaulle’s government. Growing up and going to protest with my parents and my fellow high school friends my mom would always speak about May 68 as a defining moment for them and their friends has young adults. They are part of this generation of “hippies, leftist, anarchist, socialist” named “68ers”. I used to always make fun of them and tell them they were living in the past and in Utopia.... Looking back at the events while writing this little post, I realized how a whole generation of lower and middle class workers and students made an impact for ever for modern democracy. Thanks Mom.... Yes, I know a day after mother day…

More here from wikipedia: May 68 . What I keep from the wickipedia article is this key thing to remember: May ‘68 was a political failure for the protesters, but it had an enormous social impact. In France, it is considered to be the watershed moment that saw the replacement of conservative morality (religion, patriotism, respect for authority) with the liberal morality (equality, sexual liberation, human rights) that dominates French society today. Although this replacement did not take place solely in this one month, the term mai 68 is used to refer to the shift in values, especially when referring to its most idealistic aspects.

NOC 167 has been one of my favorite writers for many years. In the late 80s I met him and hung with him on a number of occasions when he we would bump into each other at Henry Chalfant’s studio. Both Noc and I were friends of Henry’s and we could always count on him to open the door for us. Back then Noc was homeless and suffering from schizophrenia. He was no longer the style master he was known for in the 70s but we hung out anyway. By the 90s I lost touch with him and didn’t bump into him at all. I never knew what happened to him. Every 5 years or so there was a Noc sighting and I was always happy to hear that he was alive. Over the years I ended up collecting his old art work which seem to be hard to find and he certainly doesn’t have any of it. Here and there I have found some gems. But lately I have reconnected with him thru my friends, Pink and Smith, and have been able to hang with him and push him to draw again. it’s been quite amazing. He’s not the same man that he was in the 70s but he has a natural artistic talent. Here are some works from him that show the inner workings of an old style writer who also happens to be dealing with a serious mental illness. Peace.

Well before I started my ‘OverSprays’ American Sculptor David Smith was using spray paint as a tool for his art. He would not only experiment with paper stencils he would spray over tools, gears, nuts, bolts anything that would support his creative compositions. I learned of his sculptures well after I started sculpting and quickly became a fan and student of his work. He too was also heavily influenced by the Constructivist and the Avante Guarde movement. He would have loved graffiti and been influenced by it, one can clearly see parallels in his early work.

I am a big basketball fan and I have to say that those playoffs has been the most exciting since the nineties Chicago Bulls era (minus the Warriors-Dallas series last year).... At least for me. The level of the game currently by the Celtics, Hornets and Lakers is amazing. As much as I don’t like Kobe outside the game, he is definitely the MVP of this year, hands down. Chris Paul is crushing it with NO. and the big 3 of Boston reminds me the trio from back in the days. I am gonna have to go with Boston as the winner of this year’s final...I know as an adopted New Yorker I am not allowed to support Boston… but the game they play, the team spirit, the best bench in the league and the non selfishness they bring to the floor every night is amazing. If you love the game you have to love those Boston Celtics.

Open Letter about Change

This morning when I went to get my coffee I saw the front page headline proclaiming Barak Obama the candidate representative for the DNC. Something about reading that overwhelmed me and had me fighting back strong emotions. I’ve been following this election closely and like most have been totally inundated, over informed and misinformed about the numbers, the policies and super delegate hold out. I havent been so interested in politics since Bill Clinton took office for his first term. Why does this capture the imagination of so many of us, obviously that a woman and an mixed race man is at the center of it all but for me it is the potential to send a resounding message of change across the globe. Personal change, ideological and political change. This isnt chump change as advertised, I believe the effect wether Obama wins or not is evident in the momentum in the personal lives of those of us who aspire to push forward new ideas and hopes for greater ones tomorrow. My disbelief and bitterness in Government like many is not a blanket judgement, I believe there are some officials that do fight the good fight for us and the world at large, what the change in leadership can bring is the promise of a return to some of our founding principles, in fact since Obama is well verse in Constitutional Law he may overturn some of the biases legislation passed by the previous Administration, I feel its imperative that he do so.</F>

Writing this I cant help but think of my Grandma, Mother and Dad, Puerto Rican immigrants who came to the states in the 1950s. I was born in the Civil Rights era in Spanish Harlem. One could not imagine what life had in store for me or the rest of the world for that matter. My Mom was a die hard Democrat, she was in love with Kennedy and the promise of Democracy. Every election wether local or national she went to the booth with 5 kids in tow. I didnt understand her hopes and belief in the process since everything around us was caving in, schools failed us, cops betrayed us, the welfare offices judged us, where was her reservoir of hope I wondered, against all this opposition? She died hopeful yet broken hearted in too many pieces for me to reclaim, I know that ultimately she did want change if not for herself for her grandkids, I didnt understand it much and maybe I wont but what is certain is that she lived and died seeking out a change and a chance.</F>

I’ve seen alot in my short life but could I have foreseen this the day when a mixed race candidate had a real shot to lead America? NO! My reservation about America’s youthful arrogance betrays my hope somewhat. Still we have come further and farther than most expected and must remember its a process that takes great will and collective support. Could this sweeping enthusiasm sustain itself when the harsh realities of a Primary run? NO! Like I said America is a youthful and arrogant country which still has a hard time embracing her recent history and indifference’s. America still eats its young! Hey but guess what? the young are biting back. What I hope for myself and my friends is that we embrace this moment as a genuine change agent for us and within our immediate circle of influence. In particular through the arts we could use this energy to re-imagine the impressions of our time. I see it happening to me and I see it coming in another form in the future. I know the catalyst for me has been the result of listening to Obama and the other candidates, these debates resonate not because of the political rhetoric but because of how it forces you to be present in your life and day to day struggles. These guys cant change everything but they can make you take a closer look at where you’ve been and where you want to go. Change you can own.</F>
