A few weeks ago I reconnected trough email with my friend Dez from Geneva, Switzerland. Dez is one of those dude that I really admired and respect as a teen. He was the first dude I saw wearing Stussy in Switzerland when I had no clue what street wear really was 15-20 years ago. He made me want to do design, do art, music,etc… He has been part of the creative scene in Geneva for a long time and is always one step ahead of the mass. His swiss design company Schonherwehrs is designing for clients such as Mental Groove Rec. and the Contemporary Art Center of Geneva. Dez added a new piece to his portfolio: Dope Bikes. With 2 friends from Zurich they started Gorillia Bicycles and are building top of the top bikes with frames made in Italy. I am not an expert in bikes but from what I heard in NY and knowing Dez, that shit ain’t no joke. Check their website and enjoy the pictures.

Barry Forde is racing for Gorilla, maybe on his way to the Olympics with his black pearl GOrilla bike.

Wälde, grand styler and Zurich freestyler on the Zengang bike...He is also the dude putting all the bikes together like swiss watches.

Thomas with his course Canary GOrilla is the living Encyclopedia of Italian bikes history and the business man of the trio.

MAY 68 ARTWORKS

Following my post about May 1968 anniversary, I just wanted to add something about the political posters and flyers that symbolized this uprising. As somebody comment on my last post, the richness and spontaneity of the arts created all around France will mark forever graphic designers around the world. Unanimous art students and factory workers created as a unified front some of the strongest slogans and icons of the french graphic heritage. The great thing about it is that nobody knows who did what.... Strictly anonymous!

Robert Rauschenberg, Dies at 82.

Some people just have a way of putting things together and inventing. Robert Rauschenburg’s collage, sculpture, painting and screenprint had an big impact on me growing up. There are the well-known pieces, but also a bunch of random ones: a light-exposed six-foot tall sheet of blueprint paper from 1950. From the New York Times: “No American artist, Jasper Johns once said, invented more than Mr. Rauschenberg.” Big statement (if its true, Juan is a close second), but this is seriously good stuff, man.

Popular George 1983

I recently saw this movie called Vigilante from 1983...this movie was primarily filmed in Greenpoint and has lots of vintage neighborhood graffiti in it, (mainly the TKC crew). Capitalizing on the Bronson/Deathwish movies this is like a poor man version of Deathwish 1, but is worth the watch if you like seeing old footage of NY/BK in particular. Veteran B movie stars Robert Forster and Fred Williamson keep it moving blasting at fools and administering beatdowns with their boys at a steady pace...These are stills from a scene were Fred Williamson is chasing a drug dealer through the upper decks of the pool in Macarren park. PG comes off right in the middle of the action, even a couple of Deak tags as well.
Classic shit…

Why I feel Blu is the most prolific Street Artist of his Generation

Italian street artist BLU is one of the most prolific and original artists I have ever met. His ability to improvise on such a large scale reminds me of Keith Haring. Clearly he has been influenced by him but has taken it to a whole other level of execution. Ive never seen anything like this at such a scale and proliferation since the days of Keith Haring. MAY 68 ANNIVERSARY

This month is the 40th anniversary of the general strike (10 millions workers and students) and the Paris riots( 20’000 students) that shut down France for more than a month in May 1968 and almost collapsed the General De Gaulle’s government. Growing up and going to protest with my parents and my fellow high school friends my mom would always speak about May 68 as a defining moment for them and their friends has young adults. They are part of this generation of “hippies, leftist, anarchist, socialist” named “68ers”. I used to always make fun of them and tell them they were living in the past and in Utopia.... Looking back at the events while writing this little post, I realized how a whole generation of lower and middle class workers and students made an impact for ever for modern democracy. Thanks Mom.... Yes, I know a day after mother day…

NOC 167 art

NOC 167 has been one of my favorite writers for many years. In the late 80s I met him and hung with him on a number of occasions when he we would bump into each other at Henry Chalfant’s studio. Both Noc and I were friends of Henry’s and we could always count on him to open the door for us. Back then Noc was homeless and suffering from schizophrenia. He was no longer the style master he was known for in the 70s but we hung out anyway. By the 90s I lost touch with him and didn’t bump into him at all. I never knew what happened to him. Every 5 years or so there was a Noc sighting and I was always happy to hear that he was alive. Over the years I ended up collecting his old art work which seem to be hard to find and he certainly doesn’t have any of it. Here and there I have found some gems. But lately I have reconnected with him thru my friends, Pink and Smith, and have been able to hang with him and push him to draw again. it’s been quite amazing. He’s not the same man that he was in the 70s but he has a natural artistic talent. Here are some works from him that show the inner workings of an old style writer who also happens to be dealing with a serious mental illness. Peace.

Art History- David Smith Sprays 1958-1964

Well before I started my ‘OverSprays’ American Sculptor David Smith was using spray paint as a tool for his art. He would not only experiment with paper stencils he would spray over tools, gears, nuts, bolts anything that would support his creative compositions. I learned of his sculptures well after I started sculpting and quickly became a fan and student of his work. He too was also heavily influenced by the Constructivist and the Avante Guarde movement.
