An installation at the Scion Space in Los Angeles. Much gratitude to FlavorPaper for the printing and to Faesthetic for the curating and for the many many trips to the hardware store. The entire show was well documented and I compel you to take a closer look at the stupendous aqua-colored work done by Maxwell Loren Holyoke-Hirsch, Gluekit, Joel Speasmaker, Jemma Hostetler, Matt Curry, Damien Correll and Skullphone.

Here is another plug and a glimpse at the work I’m up to for next week’s THIS MUST BE THE PLACE. Definitely stop by if you’re in the Pacific standard time zone.

The latest issue of print magazine has a smart article on the origins and resurgence of four staple graphic elements in pattern; stripe, polka dot, paisley, and fleur de lis. Jude Stewart writes… “A graphic pattern starts with a lone idea - a curl, a line, an abstract figure - and then injects it with the feverish energy of repetition. Patterns can be reduced to simple mathematical data: A few Pantone digits, a precise line, and a little breathing room between marks can conquer acres of space.” Thanks James.
On print’s site you can download a sharp desktop by omnivore that incorporates each aforementioned element.

Below is my contribution to the ‘paisley’ category.

I am sorry. I don’t remember in which corner of the internet I ran across this. There’s a good chance I found it on The New Sheldon Wet/Dry, but I can’t be for certain. If this is your bedroom, let me know and I’ll give you full credit - please don’t shoot.

I was invited by the good people of Refill magazine to have a drawing burned onto a record which then became a clock. This seemed like an odd notion but I’m pleased the results. You can take a closer look at my clock and others on Flickr - and if you’re interested in acquiring one, I’ve been told you can do so at GoodFolk.com. Many thanks to Luca and the Refill team.

This past week was a big one if you’re big into contemporary industrial design. I’m not really - I just draw wallpaper, but because the FlavorPaper booth is always full force at the ICFF and the newer Brooklyn Designs fair I get to peruse a massive warehouse of weirdo credenzas and $800 per square foot furry carpets. Below are some iPhone quality shots of my designs at FlavorPaper, a goofy blue Spanish chair, a graffiti lamp by Re-Surface design, closed circuit shaving mirrors by Thelermont Hupton, Tracy Kendall‘s ‘bespoke’ hand-assembled puzzle piece wallpaper, and a pattern by British surface designer Chae Young Kim.

It never rains and then it pours. If you’re in Portland…
The Pattern People bring you Beneath the Surface at Nemo Design.

In Brooklyn I have some wallpaper featured at Brooklyn Designs ...

And if you have some change left there are some prints available at the Art Log booth of the Affordable Art Fair. ArtLog also has some amazing work by Maya Hayuk, Justin Fines, Gean Moreno & Ernesto Oroza, and Gilbert & George.

Mike Perry and friends put together a very pretty call to action in the form of this paperless zine. You should probably ride a bike, ease up on disposable containers and download this right away. I was going to apologize for this post not being especially timely, but then I remembered a bumper sticker that said ‘Every Day is Earth Day’ and I was vindicated.

I was glad to find time last week for a spontaneous field trip to Jersey City’s dystopic overpass dreamland. Accompanied by renown anthropologist DR.K.Devine and trash wizard Aaron Storck, we stomped some former stomping grounds and admired the local color. Something I truly appreciate about Jersey is its ability to have corners that remain undeveloped and overgrown. In New York real estate is too scarce to ever be truly forgotten, but you’re just a PATH train away from Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. More exciting snapshots on my flickr.
