Swiss artist Felice Varini will paint your church with zigzags and concentric circles if you like. His website has a whole mess of examples from all over the globe. Though the geometry is only perfect from a single angle Felice has said his “...concern is what happens outside the vantage point of view.” Thanks New Shelton Wet/Dry.

Brooks England has been around since the middle of the nineteenth century and have always maintained impeccable quality saddles and a broad and devoted ridership. Alpe d’Huez is one of the main climbs and has been a stage finish in the Tour de France almost every year since 1976. The first was in 1952, won by Fausto Coppi, at a time when most cyclists were riding Brooks Saddles.
This Brooks Team Pro Limited edition features a hand-hammered topogaphic map of l’Alpe d’Huez. This is the first in a series of saddles I made that attempt to draw attention to the artisanship and history of the brand. Thanks Jeremy, Malcolm, Vincent & Marco.

A nike pattern that I originally designed for product now lives on the walls of the 225 Forest store in Laguna Beach. Inspired by the global snow-sport capitols of the world it contains iconic references to Zurich, Vancouver, Seattle, Tokyo, Buenos Aires and Moscow.

On my birthday I was gifted with The Works : Anatomy of a City by Kate Ascher. This book is a thorough, illustrated guide to the myriad layers of infrastructure that make New York City function. Detailed diagrams explain the differences between the manhole designs for the Catskill Water Supply Co. and the Dept. of Public Works and every aspect of how the subways are maintained, cleaned, driven and repaired. Maritime freight, post offices, rail yards, steam tunnels, waste removal; all factors that facilitate life in the city, but until I started reading this book, knew basically nothing about. Wise up ! Thanks Jennette !

An installation at the Scion Space in Los Angeles. Much gratitude to FlavorPaper for the printing and to Faesthetic for the curating and for the many many trips to the hardware store. The entire show was well documented and I compel you to take a closer look at the stupendous aqua-colored work done by Maxwell Loren Holyoke-Hirsch, Gluekit, Joel Speasmaker, Jemma Hostetler, Matt Curry, Damien Correll and Skullphone.

The latest issue of print magazine has a smart article on the origins and resurgence of four staple graphic elements in pattern; stripe, polka dot, paisley, and fleur de lis. Jude Stewart writes… “A graphic pattern starts with a lone idea - a curl, a line, an abstract figure - and then injects it with the feverish energy of repetition. Patterns can be reduced to simple mathematical data: A few Pantone digits, a precise line, and a little breathing room between marks can conquer acres of space.” Thanks James.
On print’s site you can download a sharp desktop by omnivore that incorporates each aforementioned element.

Below is my contribution to the ‘paisley’ category.
