I can’t necessarily promise any profound insights into the world of wallpaper, but the MAD is a terrific institution and totally worth a visit. Plus thursday evening is pay-what-you-like style and perfect for these tough economic times. Many thanks to MAD for hosting and to American Craft for the generous article about my work in the October/November issue.
“AMATEUR HOUR is not necessarily a theme for the work in this show. We hope the title is fitting for the times we live in where barriers between what is considered “amateur” and “professional” creative work in photography, video and other mediums continue to be broken down. People are making great music in their bedrooms, recording news on cell phones, etc. For our first show together we want to celebrate this phenomenon with works in a variety of mediums including: video, video stills, photography, sculpture, found objects, and collage. Hope to see you! P+A Suthz.”

Being somewhat of a bibliophile it tends to distress me when books are injured. Yet I think it’s likely that James Mitchener’s Poland and this Marlon Brando biography are happier reincarnated as art installations on Graham ave. phone booths. These exploded paperbacks have been appearing around Brooklyn and the LES recently and tend to run for a week or two - due in part to the diligence of the anonymous installer who seems to have glued the case shut after trading out some horrid Sketchers ad for a piece of literature. Thumbs up.
This book is a thorough, illustrated guide to the myriad layers of infrastructure that make New York City function. Detailed diagrams explain the differences between the manhole designs for the Catskill Water Supply Co. and the Dept. of Public Works and every aspect of how the subways are maintained, cleaned, driven and repaired. Maritime freight, post offices, rail yards, steam tunnels, waste removal; all factors that facilitate life in the city, but until I started reading this book, knew basically nothing about. Wise up ! Thanks Jennette !

The latest issue of print magazine has a smart article on the origins and resurgence of four staple graphic elements in pattern; stripe, polka dot, paisley, and fleur de lis. Jude Stewart writes… “A graphic pattern starts with a lone idea - a curl, a line, an abstract figure - and then injects it with the feverish energy of repetition. Patterns can be reduced to simple mathematical data: A few Pantone digits, a precise line, and a little breathing room between marks can conquer acres of space.” Thanks James.

I was invited by the good people of Refill magazine to have a drawing burned onto a record which then became a clock. This seemed like an odd notion but I’m pleased the results. You can take a closer look at my clock and others on Flickr - and if you’re interested in acquiring one, I’ve been told you can do so at GoodFolk.com.

This past week was a big one if you’re big into contemporary industrial design. I’m not really - I just draw wallpaper, but because the FlavorPaper booth is always full force at the ICFF and the newer Brooklyn Designs fair I get to peruse a massive warehouse of weirdo credenzas and $800 per square foot furry carpets. Below are some iPhone quality shots of my designs at FlavorPaper, a goofy blue Spanish chair, a graffiti lamp by Re-Surface design, closed circuit shaving mirrors by Thelermont Hupton, Tracy Kendall‘s ‘bespoke’ hand-assembled puzzle piece wallpaper, and a pattern by British surface designer Chae Young Kim.

You should probably ride a bike, ease up on disposable containers and download this right away. I was going to apologize for this post not being especially timely, but then I remembered a bumper sticker that said ‘Every Day is Earth Day’ and I was vindicated.

I was glad to find time last week for a spontaneous field trip to Jersey City’s dystopic overpass dreamland. Accompanied by renown anthropologist DR.K.Devine and trash wizard Aaron Storck, we stomped some former stomping grounds and admired the local color. Something I truly appreciate about Jersey is its ability to have corners that remain undeveloped and overgrown. In New York real estate is too scarce to ever be truly forgotten, but you’re just a PATH train away from Cormac McCarthy’s The Road.
