Take it from Jake. Yes on 2.

There’s been a couple different ads running regularly on TV and radio featuring retired Boston police officers supporting ballot question 2. If passed, question 2 will replace the criminal penalties for possession of one ounce or less of marijuana with a new system of civil penalties.

More info on Question 2 at: http://www.sec.state.ma.us/ELE/ele08/ballot_questions_08/quest_2.htm

The band intends to announce additional touring in 2009 early next year.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hampton Coliseum is one of my favorite places to see these guys. Which venue they’re playing has a lot to do with the quality of the performance, and I can tell right away that these shows are going to be well worth the time off from work and real life responsibilities that have crept into my life within the past 5 years since the last time i saw them (their last shows) on August 14 and 15 2004. I spent a great deal of time, energy and brain cells touring with these dudes for years on end with breaks in between. It’s going to be interesting to feel like one of the older heads in the parking lot coolin’ back while watching the kids (that I once was) run around hustling and doing their tour thing. It’s going to be nice to not be the one risking the arrest for distribution, anymore. Be safe out there, kids! I’ll still be catchin silver pen tags on the port-a-johns, but that’s about as far as my illegal activities will be going, save for the ingestion of a few substances. =)

Doing time on the oz.

I’ve been on this site for seven years now and lurked on it for a year before.

Man, that’s a long time if you think about it.

I’ve literally watched people grow up on here and people can say the same about me.

I look back to my first posts where I couldn’t even figure out basic sentence structure and spoke in “webonics” and look at me now...Mr. Moderator Man with proper punctuation and everything.

What can I say about this site really?

It helped me bite styles at first.

It judged my first graffiti battle.

Then it showed me the lighter side of things and told me I can haz lolcats.

I come on here and get national news as recent as any rss feed.

In my later years, I’ve made friends with my idols and even learned about artists that helped my personal works transcend.

Here’s to you 12oz.

You’re like my Swiss Army Knife website.

More Animation- “The Grateful Dead Movie” opening animation sequence

From 1977 with Grateful Dead Icons and artwork taken from previous Grateful Dead albums (mars hotel, blues for allah, etc...) along with original works, Gary Gutierrez directed and animated this 7.5 minute mind bending cartoon that preludes a compilation of live performances from The Dead’s 5 night end of tour run at the Winterland Ballroom in 1974. I remember being a sophomore in high school watching this on 3 hits of “orange sunshine” blotter that I’d scored at my first Dead show at the Boston Garden a few nights before (Wednesday night 1993...Terrapin Station, say word). The rest of the video is totally awesome, but this opening animation sequence still steals the show. It’s best watched on a hefty amount of psychedelics, for it to fully tickle your brain and “steal your face.”

enjoy,

-aves

The Golden Age of American Animation

I’ve recently been rekindling my appreciation for cartoons from “The Golden Age of American Animation.” Like most kids in the US, I caught these cartoons after school or on Saturday mornings. But my father was no different: always a huge fan of the Warner Brothers cartoons; he would bring us home VHS cassettes with hours’ worth of these shorts recorded on them. I think it’s remarkable that after almost 30 years, I can still laugh at these things the same way I did when I was a little kid. What’s even more remarkable is that so can my old man. The fact that these cartoons have held up and stood the test of time so wonderfully should be noted, considering that the movies they were shown ahead of largely did not.

Here’s 3 that were not only favorites of mine as a kid, but have also have placed within the top 10 of “The 50 Greatest Cartoons: As Selected by 1,000 Animation Professionals.” The first two “Duck Amuck” and “One Froggy Evening” both directed by the late, great Chuck Jones, were also selected to be preserved in the National Film Registry after being deemed “culturally significant” by the US Library of Congress. The third “Red Hot Riding Hood” is from the late, great Tex Avery, who is credited not only with being instrumental in the creation of Bugs Bunny, but also in being instrumental in giving cartoons of the time the “edginess” that had been lacking in the shorts of the past AKA Disney’s cartoons. Of Avery’s contribution, Wikipedia says “Avery’s style of directing broke the mold of strict realism established by Walt Disney, and encouraged animators to stretch the boundaries of the medium to do things in a cartoon that could not be done in the world of live-action film. An often-quoted line about Avery’s cartoons was, ‘In a cartoon you can do anything,’ and his cartoons often did just that.”

enjoy.
