Occult Of Personality

I’m headed to LA this weekend where Scion Space will be hosting Installation 6. They “challenged 10 artists to create non-narrative video installations that will eventually transform five unique exhibitions around the country.” My animated short “Occult Of Personality” is featured in the project alongside French, Ill-Studio, Mark Mothersbaugh and others. The opening reception is January 23rd in Los Angeles (Culver City to be specific) go and check it out before it moves on to future locations in Austin, Wichita, Minneapolis and Brooklyn.

The Language of Music

Watched this great documentary on Tom Dowd, entitled “The Language Of Music”. Tom Dowd was a recording engineer and producer for Atlantic Records and is credited with innovating the multi-track recording method. He worked w/ musical legends such as Ray Charles, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Thelonious Monk, The Allman Brothers Band, Booker T. & the MG’s, the list goes on and on. Before starting on his musical career he worked on the Manhattan Project, helping to develop the atomic bomb. Check the trailer below.

BOTB Calgary

Probably one of my favorite black comedies, Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb was directed and produced by Stanley Kubrick in 1964. The hand-drawn titles by Pablo Ferro are beautifully done and really set the tone for the rest of the film. I’m going for a bit more minimal aesthetic in my work these days and the films opening credits illustrate that to a “T”.

Crest Fest ‘09

This Saturday, the 13th of June, my homie Joe from Crest Hardware (on the corner of Lorimer & Metropolitan Ave) in Williamsburg, Brooklyn is throwing a benefit for Macri Park (that little triangle park right by the BQE on Union/Metropolitan/Meeker) to rebuild it as well as hosting an art show IN the hardware store. Grateful Bear

It’s been two long fucking years in the making but I’m proud to announce the release of my first vinyl toy along w/ DJ A-Trak and Kid Robot. I drew this colorful creature about 4-5 years ago and I haven’t been able to shake him since. The official drop date is July 2nd, we’ll be having an in-store signing July 1st at Kid Robot’s NYC location. CALMA b/w South American Trip Part 1

I had the opportunity to travel to South America for the first time this past week. My homie A-Trak was playing at gigs in Sao Paulo, Brazil & Buenos Aires, Argentina and invited me to hop a flight down there for some much needed vacation. Our first night in Sao Paulo we met up w/ Iggor Calavera, former drummer and co-founder of Sepultura, his lovely wife Laima, their children, and enjoyed a traditional Churrasco dinner. Iggor and Laima are currently producing music and DJing together as Mixhell, check them out!

After a number of Caipirinha’s and with full stomach’s we went back to Iggor & Laima’s home for a nightcap. Whilst there I discovered the works of Stephan Doitschinoff aka CALMA. You can see part of a wall he painted in their home in the below photo.

Iggor gave me a copy of CALMA’s recent book which in the publishers words, “presents the emblematic and spiritual paintings and murals that the Brazilian painter has emblazoned on houses, churches and walls in rural villages in his South American homeland.”
