Geezer

New York, New York

Came across this poster in Indiana while road trippin’ with the crew a couple weeks back. This represents the side of the States that really scares me: Wal-Mart shopping, fast-food eating, Fox News watching, SUV driving, Us vs. Them thinking people that just might confuse Obama for Osama, and will no doubt vote for McCain and Palin. Then again, we could all be drinking the Obama Kool-Aid of ‘Hope and Change’ we’ve all been so thirsty for, while the people pulling the real strings know damm well that no change is actually coming no matter who wins the election. But fuck man, there has got to be a better way than what we’ve had the last 8 years. Dear Obama, you’re either a really charming and intelligent lying-sack-of-shit-politician who’s got us all fooled, or you really are our last hope. Don’t disappoint us.

as scared as i am of this side, it also makes me dually upset for the americans who truly represent their country and are proud of what is otherwise a rich history here. growing up hunting and fishing and going up north in wisconsin with my family i think there is a sense of pride to be had about this country just the same as any other country in the world - i just hope a more tolerant and progressive attitude can spread to combat a decade of scare tactics... even if it seems far off, no reason not to hope for it.

I dunno, man. The sign seems to reinforce basic rules of gun safety. Makes sense to me.

So my politics are about as left as they come, but I've got to pull the ripcord on this one. I'm no gun slinging hunter, but I think that hunting's got a pretty valid role in American society that is totally unlinked to political persuasion. On one of my core issues, the environment, hunters are way ahead of the curve (see ducks unlimited and wetland restoration efforts throughout the country) Do some digging on cabela's and you'll see their customer cuts across all swaths of the population. Yeah, you're less likely to find an orange flak jacket wearing kid in front of my apartment on 39th and lex or in the castro in SF, but some of my best friends in California hunt and are about as left-leaning as you can be just short of holding a molotov cocktail in one hand and wimsatt's bomb the suburbs in the other. It's that kind of exclusionary thinking that these dudes are "scary" that drives people to the right where those hunter type guys are as welcome as apple pie and bullS$&T;social policies that punish the underprivileged (ie quite welcome) -C

i think people are mistaking ryans generalized point about a photo he took on a roadtrip for saying that cabela's shoppers and people who hunt represent the dark side of america. as i said i grew up shopping there and i get his point about his being exposed to a side of america that is easy to look over when you live in an international city like nyc...
