THE REAL KINGS OF NY STICKERS

While looking at throw ups and tags on metal gates, I always noticed on the side structure those little rectangle stickers (mostly yellow or black). They are up to remind store owners that in case of a malfunction of their gates they can call for help. I started to collect them while walking around the 5 boroughs and after 4 years I gather about 50 different ones. If you talking about stickers up in the New York street, their is no “street artists” coming even close to Empire Gates. I have seen them up literally a 100’000 times. They are followed by few other companies quite close. I was sitting on this small collection of stickers for a while when my friend Nardelli from 5 BORO asked me to design a skateboard and a tee for him. Since 5B is probably the most legit skate company in New York, I decided to give away my collection for a board and tee design. I don’t mess usually too much with graphic with photo elements but this was fun. The stuff is coming out September 15th on the 5B website as well as in good skate shop sworldwide.

SOUNDTRACK TO THE END OF THE WORLD #31

My boy Justin started a nice blog where he is asking friends to send him a selection of 13 songs based on their mood of the moments. You will find in soundtrack to the end of the world a variety of downloadable playlists from death metal to glampostindustrialfunkhiphopscreemo. I have been listening to quite some reggae inspired music for the past couple of weeks. Here is an electrobomboclat playlist to download for your ears. Enjoy! LOW RIDER STUDIO

2 weeks ago while I was in Switzerland for some vacation with the family, I spent 3 days in the city of Fribourg to visit my friend Serges. Serges is the owner of Lowrider, the silk screen shop responsible for all my prints as well as client list including Lazy Dog Gallery, Parra, Steven Harrington, Razauno, Dan Funderburgh, the Swiss Museum of wall paper, etc… In his mid 30’s, mister Lowrider has been silk screening for the past 20 years!!! Yes! 20 years. Following the great tradition of swiss craftsmanship, he learnt in these 2 decades to screen directly on round stones, on huge 8 feet concrete walls for a primary school, on Japanese special paper for a museum, etc… Outside of printing for fine artists worldwide, Serges is a great illustrator, designer and he runs with his lovely wife ValĂ©rie 2 tee shirts lines, produce some fun road trip DVD and whatever they feels to create… Look out in 2009 for a Grotesk Lowrider show probably in Los Angeles.

GROTESK vs BARACK

Since I can’t vote in the USA but I have some views about this presidential race, I accepted the invite from Upper Playground to design a poster to support Obama’s campaign. We both like basketball, so I gave him the MVP treatment. Available here: Upper Playground

WHEN PRINCE IS ON COKE… IT’S DOPE.

This is what happened during the telethon 1987. James Brown invites on stage Michael Jackson and The Love Symbol. Michael do a little routine and moon walk for a second and then Prince shows up so cocked up that he first try to play the guitar with no success, then sing with no success then just leave with no success… Look at his exit. Classic 80’s material.

MISTER LEE

I spent 3 amazing days in the mountain with my friend Serges and his family. Before we headed back to Geneva, his son Lee asked me to built a character for him. I sat with some left over wood, glue and acrylics and freestyle this little dude. Hoop designed by Low Rider ! Lee, merci pour l’inspiration. On va faire un truc super avec ton dad pour Los Angeles.

MIKE WONG

Before I moved to NYC almost 10 years ago, I discovered with a lot of laugh a Thai family restaurant who opened with the best “go fuck yourself” logo ever. The fast food name was Mc Wong. His logo was basically an upside down “M” from Mc Donald’s logo, its color ways as well as the NIke Swoosh to add to the name… I knew for sure that the homey will have to change his logo asap for copyright problems. Here am I in Geneva almost 10 years later eating with my old crew at Mike Wong...In deed he has to change his name from Mac to Mike but the funniest shit is that he opened a new one next to Mc Donald’s. BIG UP Mike!!!!
