True Story-The New York Times came to Mr.Barnes for this article and asked him if he wanted to be photographed for it. If not they were going to use a mug shot. So Mr. Barnes apparently didn’t want American to view him as a convict. He thought it would hurt him in a court of law. Makes sense. Doesn’t it? Unfortunately for Mr.Barnes, his rationale backfired. Once the president and various government agencies saw the infamous cover, they thought him to be a cocky bastard and came after him even harder. He had no win.

extract:

Frank Lucas: Hey, Nick! I told everybody and their momma you’ll be hooking up with me in Harlem in the next two years.

Nicky Barnes: You won’t see me in Harlem … I gave up 109 federal felony offenses ’cause I had powder in Brooklyn and the Bronx. Too many people would be gunning for me in New York.
