My man Sabe, KST is a natural at the innovation game. Dude marches to his own drummer and then some. But heed the warning young bucks. This is a harder road than it looks, and doing it with style is not a given.

This past week, the crew was all bugging over Westgates part in the new Emerica video. I don’t think it was posted on 12oz, so if you haven’t seen it. Check it. Dude’s got pop.

I came back from the holiday to an extremely thick package waiting for me. In my research for the Handselecta book Espo suggested I reach out to Agua for some traditional and not not-so-traditional Philly smiley faces. The guy has got smiley faces for days and sent me several hundred of them, all different. It’s amazing what you can do with the simple things when you’ve got the knack for it, the drive to innovate and the time to practice til you’re good. Thanks to Agua and Espo. Good looks.

Just before Thanksgiving I met up with Seyce to talk Philly hands, posted it on youtube, and then neglected to post it here. I love how this gets almost as many “likes” as “dislike” votes on youtube. No doubt the guys got a sick hand, but that Philly style is a love-it-or-hate-it phenomona for the rest of the world I suppose.

Via The Worlds Best Ever, REVS 1993 LP has been a dollar bin casualty or an ebay extortion for a couple of years. And having heard of it for years I never saw or heard a copy before this. Being a fan of NYHC and punk, most active in the early 90’s when this came out, it was a real treat to come across it.

Happy New Year. 2010 was a whirlwind for me, and I fell off the blog schedule for a while. Hoping to get back to regular posts in the coming weeks and months. I have a ton of videos and tid-bits I’ve been stockpiling as I have been doing research for my book. Speaking of books I had lunch just before the holiday with a friend from Gingko Press and we were lamenting the loss of Independent and Used bookstores. My grandfather owned and ran a used bookstore for 20 odd years and finally retired to the world of online sales a few years back, like so many other bookstores gone the way of the dinosaur.
One of the highlights of the holidays for me is having a couple days to stomp around Central Jersey, while the grandparents watch the kids. Tons of changes in the almost 15 years since I’ve left, but there are a few gems, still holding strong. One of which is the Cranbury Book Worm, which has been my favorite used book store for years, next to the one my grandfather used to run, and thankfully the Strand is still running strong, when I’m back home in the city. Located just off the Turnpike (Exit 8A) The Book Worm is a large Victorian House in a stretch of a small historic Main Street with books stacked from floor to ceiling in every room.

They still buy books weekly and always have the most amazing variety of subjects. Often buying huge collections from estate sales. All wonderfully (dis)organized by subject, seperated by shelves and subjects in different rooms. I always feel the accomplishment of finding something you assume others missed when you have to go through every shelf. Once it gets too cleaned up I feel like it has been combed over before I got there and the good stuffs gone.

In the past I’ve come across some real finds. The last trip I came up on some vintage Avant Garde magazines for a $3 a piece. And they always have really reasonably priced stuff for my collection of history, art, politics, philosophy and theology collections. Having been a while since I went on a good book buying binge, I ended up with quite the haul for under a hundred bucks!! Check it out if you have the passion and end up in the area.

This past summer I got to sit down with Sure and Ader to talk handstyles and gather material for a Handselecta book I’ve been working on for the last few years. We only ever hung out that one time but I found him incredibly generous, eloquent and deliberate with his art and his person and I appreciated the time spent and what Sure shared with me. His loss saddens me, and his service as a soldier, both on the streets and on the battlefield are a testament to a solid character and a young life well lived. Rest In Peace.

I came across one of these being used as a doorstop in Brooklyn not too long ago. Truly incredible machine. Intimates you to stand in front of it even when it’s not moving. Very cool.
