Last night we lost Harvey Acker, my Pop Pop. A strong silent type. My sadness is that over the 30 years I knew him I had not gotten to know him as well as I would’ve liked. I am very proud of the silent intangibles he and the rest of my family have been and produced to make me who I am today. A loving and loved member of his family and community, he will be sorely missed.
A WWII Navy vet, he was aboard the USS battleship Tennessee in the Pacific theatre. He told me once he joined the Navy, thinking that it would be a good way to serve his time through the war while keeping relatively out of fire. Big surprise when they saw enough combat to be struck by a kamikaze.
He spent his entire career as a steel worker, at Bethlehem Steel, Pennsylvania. A gear cutter. I know very little about that work, but my own dad told me it was very precise work, for skilled hands.
He is survived by his wife, three children, 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Until we meet again, Pop Pop.
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
