New York, New York

Keeping with the Pixacao theme from my last post. I figured I’d do my part to break it down a little more. Or actually to let the best in the biz, break it down a little more. Last June, 2008 I had the honor of meeting Os Gemeos through Mister Raven, when they were visiting NYC to install their show at Deitch Projects. Super nice guys. They cruised by the studio and generously gave me a couple of little gems, to further the art.

You obviously feel very passionate about this. Sorry, no offense meant. Neither they nor I made any claims they invented the style. Certainly not they. (They obviously have a great respect for Pixadoras.) Nor do I know the work they do in every place. I only met them once. Nice guys. And they were friendly enough to write in my book. Thats all. The world has to know about. Please, preach on. Tell us more about Pixacao. Are any of the recent books correct?

What Fulano means is, Os gemeos are not true pichadores they are artists and writers. This is not pichacao, it is influenced by it.
Before you put up a post like this you should do some research and be careful not to misinform people.

Semantics. Please accept my new headline. “More Brazilian Writing And/Or Graffiti Art Inspired by Pixacao (HTML has a problem with rendering the cedilla in pixacao, so don’t complain of my cultural insensitivity)-Os Gemeos.” Happy now?

The way I understand it, the pichadores used to steal tar (or PITCH) from roadwork crews (which must be nearly impossible to buff) and use it to do these tall letter styles on crazy high building ledges. This style was completly original to Brasil and developed without the influence of american graffiti or spray painting. I can understand the need to differentiate this movement from what Os Gemeos (or anyone else)is doing. I feel the same way when someone tries to tie “street Art” or muralism, or stenciling, or ANY other form, to what I do. It would be akin to telling Johnny Lydon that him and David Gilmor were stylistically and philosopically similar and should be lumped together. After all, they are both British Rock Musicians of the Late Twentieth Century, aren’t they?

Agreed. Sorry for my sloppy use of language.

Can someone please break down to me why the second tag in the second video is not a classic pixador style? Seems pretty close to me (From my humble perspective several thousand miles and cultures away)

As far as I know, nobody has been bombing more during the last 15 years in Sao Paulo that Os Gemeos & VLOK !!!!.
Roles, Pieces, Tagging, Trains, Buses… much more time, money and effort spend that anybody could imagine.

Even though Os Gemeos are more graffiti writers and artists than pixadores, they have been in a constant relationship with the pixo culture since the beginnings, supporting the sao paulo writing style through their FIZ magazine in the 90’s and during interviews.
What I think they have studied the style and have enough experience to represent any pixo hand style they want !
However, the most important thing is that they still painting 5 or more pieces every week on the streets!
Would you do that if you’ve been on top for the last 15 years?? ..I don’t think so!
