Stopped by Brooklyn’s newest tattoo shop last week. I think one of the things I like about traditional styled tattoos, is the same thing I like about hand styles. Both are rich and historic folk arts, filled with motifs and style that is hard to pinpoint to any one person, yet every practitioner adds a little bit to its collective history. I picked up a new tattoo by Eli Quinters last week. He is one of the talents at Smith Street Tattoo in Brooklyn. Co-founders Bert Krak and Steve Boltz are no strangers to the world of NYC Tattoos. And this, their new venture is top notch. Stop by to peep their amazing and contemporary flash collection, if not to get inked, yourself. These guys are such fans of the art they organized and published Revisited: A Tribute to Flash from the Pastback in 2007, organizing dozens of talented hands in the revival movement of traditional Americana tattoo. Reproducing sheet for sheet flash from Tattoo artists of Americas past. If you can still find the book pick it up. Its low in quantity and high in demand. If not, go get a piece by one these guys. Trad American and Japanese style are their specialty. No frills. No fuss. Just great work in an awesome old-school styled studio.
