I took the kids down to Jersey to see the grandparents over the weekend.

And that means I got to do my favorite Mercer County comfort food spots. I spent a good portion of my youth in central Jersey. About half way between NYC and Philly. The closer you get to Philly the art of the sandwich gets better and better. And the sub sandwiches of New York gives way to the Hoagie of greater Philly. The best spot outside of Philly for a cheese steak has to be Hoagie Haven in Princeton. I make a stop everytime I’m south of Newark. The main difference between this and the propper Philly Chessesteak is that in Philly, its limited to Fried Onions, and Provolone or Cheez Whiz. The Hoagie Haven does it up with Mayo, Saltpepperketchup, lettuce, tomato, etc. And it comes in half or whole. The whole being a a whole Italian loaf of Bread from the Italian Peoples bakery. I’ve been going to the Hoagie haven for over 20 years and the Whole Cheese steak is still less than 6 bucks. This is the standard that all sandwich lunches are measured by. Next on the list was the Trenton farmers market to pick up some produce for dinner. Found some cool signage. Across the parking lot we had to stop at the Halo Farm, an awesome dairy taht makes its own ice cream and packages its own milk. So down to earth and affordable after mega-brand organics and New York City farmers markets. (I know organic snobs… I got kids. It starts making more sense) And man their ice cream kicks ass.
