My man Michael from La MJC in Paris just dropped off the latest edition of his book series “All Gone”...

The book always presents a nice window into the premier products and collaborations of each past year,
and it’s amazing how much great work is being done out there once you see it all bound together like this.
I also really like the spirit and message behind the forward he wrote for this year’s edition,
which effectively captures where we are now entering yet another exciting period of design culture.

Here’s a peep at the text below and the book is definitely worth adding to your collection, if it’s not already gone….

Known Gallery will be releasing a ltd. edition of my new serigraph tomorrow as part of their new print release program….

I produced this edition with Modern Multiples, who have been in the print game for decades,
working with a long list of artists that includes the stunning new museum quality works by Saber, Chaz and Retna.
They have a policy of working hands on in the studio alongside the artists they support,
and I was blessed with the opportunity to roll through and knock these pieces out while I was in Los Angeles.

We produced a very small run which included a few different color ways,
and the following 10 pieces are now being offered exclusively through Known Gallery :

Silver on Black: 5 of 10
/ Steel on Silver: 5 of 20
54.25″ x 42″ / Hand-pulled serigraph on Coventry Rag Vellum 320 gm/wt

Zoo York just released a tight collection of 7 skate decks created by RIME....

Besides simply showing off many of Rime’s fresh styles,
it’s good to see this kind of work actually being painted for the final product,
there is a depth to some of these decks that you could just not simulate with drawing or computer graphics.

I’m also happy to see some legitimate dudes carrying the torch a little for Zoo York again.
Regardless of it’s existence as a brand or a business, it’s part of a deep and true New York legacy,
one that is also aligned with parts of my history coming up in the ‘70s and ‘80s…

Joe also keeps it real in a personal way in the video for the project, which you can peep here, and that’s what’s up.

Finally got my advance copy of “The Underbelly Project” book….

When Workhorse first contacted me about doing a piece in the underground tunnel,
I had been starting to work with “1-Shot” paint for the first time,
and thought it was a perfect place and opportunity to try really wilding out with it…
since it is generally way too toxic and fumes unfriendly to do too much of anywhere else.

It was a lot of fun, and the speed at which the “1-Shot” drips into itself looks great in the time lapse video they shot too.
Here’s a couple of the stills they printed in the book, and advance copies are now available for pre-order here.

I was one of many artists who participated in GRAFFUTURISM’s “In Situ” installation down at Art Basel this year,
and was also asked by the curator, Poesia, to write an introduction for it’s official release online.
It was truly inspirational as we all hung out painting together literally 360 degrees for a few days,
and I made an effort to reflect on a number of things I believe this collective art installation represents at this point in time.
The full installation with images and text are up now here : www.graffuturism.com

I had the pleasure of joining a few friends for three different book signing / release events down at Art Basel this year :

First up on Friday night was “The Underbelly Project” exhibition and book signing.
Big time congratulations to Workhorse, PAC and the producers of this show, it came together spectacularly.
The show itself was truly museum quality and extremely well received, the book came out great too.
Thanks for welcoming me to participate in both, more pics and coverage can be seen here : The Underbelly Project @ Art Basel

Next night was a signing for my man Tristan Eaton’s “3D Book” project.
The book itself is dope and Tristan always keeps it moving in a number of directions with his art, design studio and brand Thunderdog.
Had fun with a bunch of other great artists at the signing, and - proof that you can still teach an old dog new tricks -
did my first actual “3D tag” using a red and blue sharpie at the same time after biting this technique from Tristan mid-signing :
Unfortunately I only got this poor quality pic of it, and more coverage and pics from the event can be seen here : 3D Book Signing @ Art Basel

Last up but not least, I was happy to end the night with NY and 12oz fam at Chino and Sacha Jenkins “World Piece Book” signing event.
Spent more time hanging out than anything here, catching up with Erni after a few decades, rapping about old New York with Skid DMS,
and connecting a few other dots before sparking up in the back room with the crew then out…
look for Chino’s own post on 12oz for a full recap soon too.

Good times.

The once clandestine collection of underground work titled “The Underbelly Project” is coming above ground this year @ Art Basel.
Propelled by the organizers Workhorse and PAC, there will be a book release and supporting art show
which includes a cast of characters who painted in the once forgotten Brooklyn subway tunnel it was originally host to.

I also wrote the forward and supplied some archival subway tunnel images for the book,
which is published by Rizzoli and edited by John and Jiae of Theme Magazine.
Here is the official press release and invite :

After a full year underground, The Underbelly Project is resurfacing this December in Miami during Art Basel.
Presented in its own pop up gallery from 30 November – 5 December,
the show will feature original artwork from 35 of the 103 international artists that participated in the hidden subway project.
This exhibition will highlight the essence of the abandoned New York City station known as the Underbelly.

Workhorse has stated: “The New York Underbelly was an important chapter for us, but the story hadn’t been comprehensively told.
The Underbelly Miami show gives us a chance to present the broad scope of documentation ;
Videos, photos, time-lapses and first hand accounts.
The project is about more than just artwork. This show gives us a chance to show the people and the environment behind the artwork“
PAC has stated: “While the experience each artist had in their expedition underground can never be captured,
it is my hope that this show will highlight some of the trials and tribulations
associated with urban art taking place in the remote corners of our cities.
Too often the practice of making art in unconventional venues remains shrouded in mystery and I hope this exhibition
will shine a faint light on those artists who risk their safety to find alternative ways to create and be a part of the cities they live in.”

Included in the show are street, graffiti and fine artists alike. The full line-up of artists include:
Faile, Dabs & Myla, TrustoCorp, Aiko, Rone, Revok, Ron English, Jeff Soto, Mark Jenkins, Anthony Lister, Logan Hicks, Lucy McLauchlan,
M-City, Kid Zoom, Eric Haze, Saber, Meggs, Jim & Tina Darling,The London Police, Sheone, Skewville, Jeff Stark, Jordan Seiler, Jason Eppink
and I AM, Dan Witz, Specter, Ripo, MoMo, Remi/Rough, Stormie Mills, Swoon, Know Hope, Skullphone, L’Atlas, Roa, Surge, Gaia,
Michael De Feo, Joe Iurato, Love Me, Adam 5100 Feibelman, and Chris Stain.

Fashioned to resemble the abandoned station four stories beneath the bustle of New York City,
the exhibit will attempt to capture the experience of artists’ that were invited leave their creative mark four stories beneath the city streets.
The show will feature video footage of artists at work, still documentation, as well as recorded sounds heard in the tunnel.

Exclusively at The Underbelly Show,
the unreleased We Own the Night: The Art of The Underbelly Project book,
will be available as a limited edition collectors boxed set before the public release in February.
This boxed set will include a hard cover book along with 9 unreleased photos packaged in a hand crafted oak box
engraved with the names of each artist that contributed to the project.
Before the general viewing there will also be a book signing featuring many of the aforementioned artists.

The gallery is located at 78 NW 25th St. in the Wynwood District

It was an interesting art tour out on the west coast last month,
especially with a host of other east coast artists showing and working in LA these days too.
A number of notable exhibits during the few weeks I was there spoke for a strong and growing audience,
and there was a lot of good energy in town leading up to Greg and my openings at Known Gallery…

Returning to Known for my second full blown exhibition in their main gallery,
I was happy to have pushed myself to create enough work to effectively fill the 3000+ sq. ft. space,
which I knew from experience eats up work fast, especially with over 20 ft. tall ceilings.

Here are pics of the full installation, sequenced as close as possible to how I intended the work to be viewed ;
many thanks and much love to the Known Gallery team and family for all their continued support,
as well as all the friends and supporters who represented for the show, both in person and online.
The show will also remain up through next Saturday, Oct. 8th for anyone who may still be in the area.

pics by Carlos Gonzales to follow now,
My man Justin “World Wide Rev” Barnes was in NYC this summer working on some video projects,
so we made a plan to shoot footage in the studio every couple of weeks while I was developing the “New Mathematics” collection….

We just cut together this quick trailer to drop now before the show,
and will be putting together a long form piece to include the install and opening after all is said and done too :

Greg Lamarche and I are both now preparing our installations at Known Gallery in LA,
getting ready for the opening of our joint exhibitions there this weekend…

Greg and I have been good friends and co-conspirators of sorts for a many years now,
and we are both deep to the translation of typography and abstraction through the evolution of our own styles.
We have been planning to do something of this kind together for a long long time,
both personally and from the perspective of where we see the current art movement born out of graffiti and design culture headed,
and I look forward to seeing a lot of the ideas we have always exchanged reflected together soon in both of our most current work.

again, the shows open to the public on Saturday, Sept. 17th from 7-11 PM,
peep the invites we have both already posted for individual specifics,
and more info and press releases can be also found here on the known galley website :

My first trip to Beijing and mainland China was incredibly inspiring…

Believe the hype ;
reminiscent of Japan in the early 90’s,
there is a genuine revolution of style, product and youth culture in full effect in China…
and yes, business is definitely booming there too.

After 6 days on the ground, half of them working,
the other half getting to know the city and building relationships over dinner and drinks,
I left with a great sense of promise for the future there…

Thanks to the great support and hard work of Jimmy Au and Red Agency,
Tim and Rose from the Kappa / C19 team, Himm and Kiki from the Urban Family,
G-Ming from Mess / Beijing, and a host of other people involved in our project,
we succcessfully launched the C-19 Brand and the first of four pop up shops scheduled for release this year.

Here are some pics from the launch event and following media day,
next stop Shanghai….

A small capsule of t-shirt graphics I produced for X-Large last year is being released in Japan this month,
along with a ltd. edition poster I designed for XL’s 20th Anniversary this year…

Here are the designs in black and white as I created them,
plus some recent press we did for the project with a magazine called “Hidden Champion”,
which shows a few of the color ways and poster too :

Digging through my archives, I recently uncovered these collage works in my old portfolio from School of Visual Arts…

When I first set out to formally study graphic design in the pre-macintosh era,
the existing model was a whole different science of laying things out by hand mechanically.
Using a t-square, rubber cement and hand cut elements, I learned the art of cut and paste,
including the fundamentals of using a grid system grid in editorial design.

Looking to the Bauhaus, De Stijl and Swiss design for some of my earliest inspiration,
these are a few of the typographic excersizes that made it into my portfolio in 1984.
Unfortunately I have no idea what happened to the original pieces,
but I thought these end result color copies were still worth a look at the better part of 30 years later :
The new UNRULY Gallery in Amsterdam is opening this friday night with an inaugural group show,
hosting a deep cast of characters from both sides of the Atlantic….

The Gallery is the brainchild of my old friend and partner in crime Neils “Shoe” Muelman.
Neils has always been good with words, both design wise and conceptually,
and he shares some of his current sentiments with us in the following announcement :

A number of my favorite lettering style masters are representing for this exhibition,
so I expect a lot of great type based work to emerge from it….
the artwork will also be available for purchase online at : http://www.unrulygallery.com

There is a big benefit event to help raise funds for the restoration of the original Style Wars master being held tonight,
which includes a deep line up of artists and actors who have made contributions to the show and online auction…

As a proper benefit, tickets are also being sold to both the gala dinner and after party,
so follow up on the invite below if you want to kick down to join and $upport.
I have contributed the 40"x40” canvas shown above,
which is available along with many other works through a silent auction starting online later today at :

http://www.auctioncause.com

“Style Wars” ...
arguably one of the most important and influential documents in graffiti’s long and storied history,
25 years later and still every bit as relevant today is it was back then, perhaps even more so.

Recently, my dude “Metal Man Ed” reached out to me asking if I would do an SE3 throw up on one of his custom fabricated train panels…
Instead of trying to put a price on it, being that Ed is effectively one of the caretakers of IZ THE WIZ’s legacy and art collection,
I asked if there might be any good IZ pieces he would be willing to trade me for,
always feeling different about this kind of thing when it can just be art for art amongst friends and true heads within the community…

Lucky for me, Ed decided he would part with one of the choice tag / drawings he had,
knowing that Mike and I were in fact both true friends and bombing partners in the RTW crew.
I can’t tell you how emotional it made me feel when I came home to NY to find the piece waiting for me,
it is truly one of the treasures in my 30+ year collection of work by friends and artists I consider art heroes in their own right.

So big thanks to Ed and to Mike, Rest In Peace,
the piece is beautiful….

” The IZ THE WIZ Non Stop Exspress to Freedom” ?

word, you know it.

With all the painting and installations going on around downtown LA last month,
I was psyched to have a mural project of my own lined up in the neighborhood too…

Since creating a t-shirt for The Standard hotel a few years ago,
I have been interested in participating more in their growing art and product programs.
so when the opportunity came up to take my turn at bat on their 40’ mural space outside the downtown branch,
I was all over it…especially since we were able to coordinate doing it while I would be out there for the museum show anyway.

At 40’ x 6’, I thought the wall was an ideal dimension for the kind of painting which calls for a full stroke top to bottom,
the same way we would have approached a T2B on a train car from a platform or catwalk back in the day…
I also thought it would be a good place to start working with a combination of spray paint and traditional brush,
looking to conceptually fuse together different references through the juxtaposition of technique and materials.

Armed with a few boxes of spray paint that Risky, Matt and Reudi blessed me with from the LA Montana Store,
plus an 6” wide brush and gallon of black exterior acrylic that I shipped out from Crest Hardware in BK…
I jumped on a scizzor lift for couple of days to knock out the artwork I had mocked up on a photograph ahead of time.
After drawing the first outlines in spray, I sprayed in the color backgrounds while my man CR cut back the white with brush and roller,
then I came back with brushes for the main black stroke and white date and signature.

It felt good flexing a few old muscles and working on this scale with spray paint again,
the acrylic laid down over it nice and smoothly too…
and considering the theme of the moment,
it was cool to get outside and actually do some “art in the streets” while I was in LA too :

Back in NY now and finally got a chance to put together pics of my installation at MOCA :

This collection focuses on the working drawings, sketches and layouts of designs
I created for a variety of artists and brands throughout the birth of hip hop into mainstream consciousness.

The skateboard and color print in the middle are silkscreened printers proofs,
the logos are the hand made original artworks I created with pen and ink,
and the two mechanicals towards the bottom are examples of early pre-print production using photostats and acetate overlays…
all of it long before the introduction of the macintosh computer and current modern design technology.

plus a bonus pic Martha Cooper shot in front of her amazing historical installation :

Still being here in LA, I have been close to the current affairs surrounding REVOK’s recent arrest…

Aside from the obvious fact that there are some serious legal wrongs going on here that need to be made right asap,
it is clear that my man is being singled out and persecuted not only on some trumped up smoke and mirrors bullshit,
but also because law enforcement simply can’t stand what an international hero dude has become
to both the established art world and disenfranchised alike.
The truth is, despite whatever outlaw roots he may have been born out of, Revok has emerged as one of the most talented, hard working,
articulate, and well respected spokesman for both his immediate community and the cutting edge of the aerosol art movement worldwide,
something that was further solidified by his front and center inclusion in the recent MOCA show.

Thing is, though it looks to be an unfortunate waste of ( hopefully short ) time and money now before he’s able to wake up back in his own bed,
LA law enforcement may look back on this as something that will also prove to be a major miscalculation on their part…
not only is the backlash and support for Revok in just these short few days overwhelming, but like many injustices,
will only serve to solidify a growing and increasingly mobilized public art movement.
and beyond simply their inability to keep a good man down,
I trust dude will soon be back to the game with an even stronger sense of purpose, dedication and life force to be reckoned with…
and yes, even more of the notoriety and name brand recognition that is the stuff of true legends.

and we are all looking forward to seeing REVOK back in the mix again soon.

After much hype and anticipation, the “Art In The Streets” exhibition finally opened in LA last weekend…

The show itself was pretty overwhelming, with so much great art and history to take in all at once,
after 5 times in the museum I still feel like I barely scratched the surface.
To their credit, many parts of the show deserve to be appreciated in a much quieter environment than a busy opening,
something I plan to make time to do again before leaving town.

With so much having been said already,
and I’m sure so much more that will be championed or debated about this exhibition well into the future,
I will just share these reflections for now :

Personally, I was proud to be included among so many of the greats of my generation,
as well as so many other friends and peers who have helped shape the movement over the arc of four decades now.
After two full on nights of openings there, both private and public,
for all the amazing art and artifacts that I absorbed, old and new,
plus whatever appreciation I received for my own installation,
the thing I took away most with me were the personal moments ;

Watching my brother Lee representing proudly in front of his featured new masterpiece
that I know he poured his heart into for months leading up to the show.
Standing in front of the Blade tribute wall with Blade,
then hearing my man Rime’s own personal experience creating it just days before.
Getting an inspired sneak preview of the unbelievable street market installation from my man Ari.
Hugs and pounds with my west coast peeps including
Risk, Revok, Retna, Push, Saber, and Eklipz as they enjoyed the well deserved fruits of their labors.
Heartfelt reminiscing with first generation founding fathers from both coasts like Chaz and a childhood hero of mine, Snake -1.
A heavy but essential moment with Rammellzee’s widow Carmela,
inside the undeniable testimony to her late man’s unwavering vision and brilliance.
Quality time spent with some of the european kings like Mode and my partner Shoe, who arrived just in time to share the moment,
plus assorted friends and fam from past, present, east, west, Europe and Japan,
who came to support a history they could all relate to despite such diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
Fittingly, the last two people I saw and shared a hug with on my way out of the museum were Henry and Martha,
leaving me with a sense of closure for this chapter, this tour, this experience,
and another part of the amazing journey that has bound us all together for better and worse over the course of our lives and careers.

Yes, this exhibition was big, in many ways for many people,
and though still far from operating on a level playing field,
the game was truly elevated to new heights by a retrospective of this quality and magnitude.
It’s immediate impact and long term value should not be underestimated,
and It will be interesting to see how it may be reshaped and re-contextualized when it comes back to Brooklyn next year too.

Yet, at the same time, it’s also important to keep in perspective that no one show, book or catalog can truly define us ;
individually, collectively, historically or as an international language and movement that will continue to grow and evolve forever.
We have seen graffiti, and now “street art”, labelled and put inside many boxes for many decades now,
and though this was by far the biggest, most beautiful and well funded one we have seen it in so far.
no matter how grand, it is still just a stadium which remains empty if not for the players and fans.
All marketing, media and genuinely universal aspirations aside,
Graffiti in it’s true and purest sense was a form built on the belief and understanding that we created our own rules,
wore our own home made uniforms, and received the trophy or crown from a jury of our peers only.
The art form has come a long long way since the first revolutionary canvasses done by the UGA,
and the white walls of MOCA are a far cry from the rat infested tunnels of New York City,
but at heart…the name…is still…The Faith of Graffiti.

and tag, you’re it.

                    A while back Westo posted a few early t’s from the 90’s that sparked a memory of this particular one I had tucked away too ;

As I’m leaving to LA tomorrow to participate in the MoCA “Art In The Streets” exhibition opening there later this month,
I thought this shirt was an appropriate post on my way out the door…

Like hip hop itself, the once primarily NYC phenomenon of graffiti soon found it’s second home out in California,
after which the two coasts remained a platform for the styles and spirit that have since exploded around the world.
T-shirts were truly one of the first products to export this language in a tangible way,
becoming yet another canvas and vehicle to push the movement forward on our own terms.

This Tribal t shirt captures this essence in it’s infancy,
one of the early east x west joints before collabo’s became an industry standard.
no illustrator eps files and no slick logos or other branding,
just raw tags from a lot of now familiar heads that Tribal founder Bobby Ruiz collected at the ASR trade show one season.
I’m gonna guess this was no later than 1993 judging from the fact it still has just a plain fruit of the loom label in it too.

All these years later, from trains to walls to t-shirts to MoCA, and everything in between.,,
it will be interesting to see how the first element is represented through the blender of time in this month’s LA exhibition.

My dudes Ninjasonik recently released a new video “Global” together with Spank Rock,
which was shot in Amsterdam, partly in front of the piece I did outside the Patta store there in 2007…

I have also been working on some new graphics for their upcoming LP…
so look for the Ninja’s to continue wrecking shop somewhere in your area soon,
coming straight out of Brooklyn....
