REAL STREET REAL FASHION

I am proud to announce my partaking in a current exhibition curated by The Victoria & Albert Museum in London, aka The V&A. The exhibition is titled “Selling dreams” 100 years of fashion photography. The exhibition also features some of my own initial sources of creative inspiration, photography masters who have shaped epochs of style throughout the past century, including:
Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Horst P. Horst, Helmut Newton, Steven Meisel and Jurgen Teller.
My contribution to this exhibition stems from a series of my early work and is part of the exhibition chapter titled “capturing real life”. The image was made in the mid 90’s and was really about capturing “Ghetto Fabulous” before the term was even coined. The series feature “real” people from the streets, and models from agencies that were generally too street for mainstream, and fashion documenting the times by mixing straight up street classics like Nike kicks, Canal Street gear and windbrakers with Comme de Garcon and YSL. All shot on location in Chinatown as well as my old hood in the L.E.S.

The V&A is home to the UK’s National Collection of the
Art of Photography. The Collection comprises over half a million works including many hundreds of fashion photographs. This is the
first touring exhibition from the V&A’s Collection to explore the work of 40 select international fashion photographers and to draw together
such a broad range of important historic and contemporary fashion images. This exhibition will be unveiled for the very first time at
Light House, as part of a UK tour. The show is on view until Friday 13 January 2012.
Special thanks to Kathryn Kliszat Curator at the Lighthouse.

BITERS BEWARE- RICHARD PRINCE

I have just received the news that my friend and fellow photographer Patrick Cariou has won his copyright infringement laws suit against artist Richard Prince.
Richard Prince presented a show at the Gagosian gallery in Chelsea in 2008. I went there and to my disbelief i recognized Patrick’s photos as the main object in these giant mural paintings. Basically Richard Prince straight jacked Patricks photo’s from his book Yes Rasta, published by Power House, and scanned the images, then digitally printed the images on canvas and cut out the eyes and mouths of the subject, juxtaposed them against some other photos he jacked, and threw some paint on top. Richard Prince and Gagosian has sold these works for over $10 million. and I hear that the judge has ruled in Patrick’s favor to receive even more than that.
I hope that this will help to remind jacking ngz to back off and think twice before swiping other artist hard work for free. we work too damn hard for our royalty.

One of my first post’s on 12oz was about having my art work and style being biten one too many times. It has happened allot but sometimes
you have to put your foot down. A video director named Melina Matsoukas straight ripped my photography and replicated the setup for an Eve
video. I sued and settled quietly. Now the same director has done it again with the latest Rihanna video S&M, she and Rihanna are being
sued by photographer David Lachapelle for 4 million dollars. To start, we all get inspired by other artist, but you gotta find your own juice, at least when
working in the public arena and start capitalizing. Pay for your samples. Act respectfully. Discourage rippin’.

Is Music and Art.

After returning to and spending more time than usual in Copenhagen, Denmark, where I was born, I am encountered by many fond old friends and memories. All of them are great and one memory that I am extra lucky to revisit on a daily basis, is the memory of my father. Much of his spirit is kept alive by his music.
His name was Sahib Shihab, and for those interested, here’s a little info drawn from multiple sources and compiled into a recent review from MOJO magazine, on a re-release of “Sahib’s Jazz Party”, its written by Andrew Male..he calls it ” Stupid rare”

Born Edmond Gregory in Savannah, Georgia in 1925, Shihab cut his teeth on post-Parker bop, recording with Miles, Coltrane, Monk (he’s on the original version of Round About Midnight) and Dizzy Gillespie’s big band before departing the U.S. in the late ‘50s, angered by the racial tensions of contemporary New York. “I don’t have time for this racial bit,” he told Down Beat magazine in 1963, “It depletes my energies.”

After touring Europe with the Quincy Jones Big Band in the early ‘60s, Shihab settled down in Scandinavia, moving between Denmark and Sweden and establishing a thoroughly unique driving sound that blended post bop, modal, Eastern and Northern European styles; wild rasping experiments on flute and sax, against driving, flowing rhythms that suggested nothing less than the reed equivalent of the mercurial Monk himself.

This album, cut live in Copenhagen in ‘63, is a rolling joy. Led in by Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson’s walking bass, and the twin-drum kits of Alex Riel and Bjarne Rostovold, opening track, 4070 Blues, comes on like some pastoral theme tune from the wildest ever ‘70s kids’ TV show, Shihab’s urgent, rough-house flute wigging out and digging in as the rhythm section keep it moving ever forward, like some carnival of woodland animals hopped up on mushrooms and licorice root. Shihab’s clenched, cautious introduction to Charade - “The title… song… from… the Stanley. Donen. Pro. Duction. A UNI! Versal release… titled ‘Sharard’ or ‘Sha-raid’...” - suggest that he may not have been completely sober during the recording, but his playing, as soloist and bandleader is totally in control, pulling the band on a twisting, mystical ride that conjures up images of Cary Grant’s Euro playboy world wrenched at the seams by free psychedelic revolution.

An unsung hero of radical ‘60s and 70’s jazz, Shihab’s wider rediscovery is long overdue. Stay tuned..you are about to witness just that.
