“The Style of ‘76”
This country’s Bicentennial year brand new F trains were running with a red a blue stripe and the motto “Spirit of ‘76” on the outside of every car. In fact that motto was everywhere; the powers that be were pushing patriotism hard. The fourth of July celebration was unprecedented, tall ships flying full mast down the Hudson, a fireworks display like the world had never seen. Graffiti writers seemed to catch the fever along with the rest of the City. Whole Cars, shit… Whole TRAINS were being painted like never before. Bigger, brighter, far more complex…
Revolutionary shit to celebrate our Revolutionary War.
I was nine years old and WIDE open. I had my first pair of Pro-Keds (no more Buster Browns for the kid, unh-uh!) I would keep my hand on my little radio volume dial waiting for Paco on 92 WKTU to drop that Bohannan Beat or Fatback Band. But, on the low, I also loved Silly Love Songs by Paul McCartney and Wings, Sarah Smile by Hall and Oats, even the Captain and Tennille. Disco was King and Donna Summer was its Queen. You could hear her moan herself to orgasm on any station any time of day or night. The Ohio Players, Tavares, MFSB, Lou Rawls, or who could forget Johnny Taylor “Move it in, Move it out…”
Sexy stuff.
So my friends, I offer you these two gems from the summer of ’76. Play the one while you look at the other and tell me if you don’t get all Misty Blue like Dorothy Moore.
