Calle 13’s new video made the hair on my arms and neck rise. Even if you don’t understand Spanish you will get the general message. Its amazing when music artists get behind a cause and deliver a powerful message that captures public opinion and share it with the world. The world needs issues discussed and shared in this manner since the media turned to puppets of the governments. People need to be pissed and stop putting up with the bullshit we are dealt.

here are the lyrics:
Esto es un mensaje…
De parte del residente ‘e Calle 13…
Pa’ to’ el gobierno…
Y pa’ to’ los puertorriqueños…
Danny, métele ahí...

Queridos compatriotas…
Abogados, maestros, alcaldes, y chotas
Doctores, bichotes, bomberos, enfermeros
Contables, traqueteros, piragüeros, to’ el mundo entero
Manuela, Caimito, Vista Hermosa
Covadonga, Camarones, Alturas, Torres Sabanas
Villa Esperanza, Sabana Abajo, Villa Fontana
Me dan nausea, me dan asco
Yo se que estoy perdiendo los cascos
Por culpa de ustedes, jodios brutos
La Calle 13 esta de luto
(Con calma, Compi, hay que ser astuto!) ¡Cállate!
Fucking federales, gandules y guardias estatales

So the Yankees might have lost the first game of the 2010 world series but last week there were winners in town. At Revolution books Part One and I celebrated the release of our new books and despite the crazy rain storm friends and fans came out to get signed copies. Then on the weekend we boogied over to Sen 2 and Beond’s store in the Bronx called Da Bakery and set up a small exhibit of Part’s recent drawings and signed more books. While writers were painting up the day around town on the first warm day in awhile many were nice enough to pop by and pay homage to Part for his 30+ years in the game. Thanks to the stores for hosting us and thanks for everyone that came down including Bonz Malone, Nic 707, Noc 167, Riff One, Lava 1 and 2, Sean Ziran, Fabel, Henry Chalfant, Flite, Chain 3, Serch and Herzo all the way from Holland, Wane, Snooze, Ivory, and everyone else. Of course we also got down at Tuff City Tattoos in the Bronx where the old school came thru deep. Thanks to Med for that.
Peace.
ps- Can you believe the Vandal Squad is still stalking these events?

Piecing Taught by Stylemaster Enrique “Part One” Torres & Jacob Kimvall

Part One started painting subway cars in the early Seventies and took part of the downtown gallery scene in the Eighties; and the goal of his master class is to create a deeper understanding of the black book tradition. The “undergraduate” students will develop their skills in, for example, laying out a page, formatting the book and using different marker techniques. They’ll achieve general knowledge of different markers, paper preservation, and last but not least get a feeling for the possibilities and complexity of the black book. Master class students will deepen their knowledge and skills with a true master of the arts.

ON THE RUN BOOK # 4 | release date 25th September 2009

After the successful relaunch of ON THE RUN BOOKS in spring 2009, we proudly present for your reading and viewing pleasure the first book in the second round of OTR titles: Part One – The Death Squad.

A book of great importance, Part One – The Death Squad gives credit where credit is due to the unsung legend that is Part One – an original style writer. This is the first publication that deals with his overwhelming impact on writing culture, with stories from the early days until now. We relish the opportunity to give props and acknowledge one of the true innovators who have paved the way for writing culture aesthetics today. Author Alain “KET” Maridueña delves into the life and times of Part One with exclusive essays on growing up in Spanish Harlem in the 70s and 80s, the mid 70s style writing developmental years, The Death Squad years and the legendary Hall of Fame New York. With foreword by Carlos “Mare 139” Rodriguez and exclusive, unpublished images from Part’s 70s and 80s train writing days along with more recent works. This is a historical gem not to be missed.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Recently Jon One 156 and a few other writers were invited by the French authorities to paint some whole cars to launch a new train service and of course Jon and the others took the task and the cash to do it. It is a bizarre and astonishing twist in the relationship between the authorities and writers but one that I welcome. What better thing to happen than for writers to paid and celebrated for their train work than thrown in jail or buffed. As Jon put it, “Only in Europe…Maybe NYC will pay homage to the old school one day…”
Among the other writers that got down with this project were Sozy One, Zedz, and Nunca.

I recently spent some time visiting friends and doing some public speaking out in Copenhagen and Malmo, Sweden on the topic of getting up, getting over, and staying free. My past experience with the police and the court system has given me a first hand look at what to do and what not to do. The discussions were well attended and well received and I am thankful that the local writers came out to kick it and hear some sound advice. While I was out there I was glad to see so many active writers keeping the city and this movement alive. Legal walls were rocked of course but what impressed me the most were the amount of panel pieces and end to ends that were running in service day after day. I decided to spend some time benching the trains and catching some of the action. Here are a few shots. Ah, if this were only New York…..

THIS EVENT promises to be a crackling evening of passionate and penetrating conversation over matters that many are seriously concerned about but have not dared to discuss out loud and in public. Cornel West and Carl Dix will break the silence and address from their different philosophical perspectives what the election of Obama really means for people in the U.S. and around the world. And they will exchange over the need for resistance and the prospects for and path to liberation for the oppressed in the U.S. and indeed, for all of humanity.

CORNEL WEST is one of America’s most provocative public intellectuals and has been a champion for racial justice since childhood. His writing, speaking, and teaching weave together the traditions of the black Baptist Church, progressive politics, and jazz. The New York Times has praised his “ferocious moral vision.” Dr. West currently teaches at Princeton University.

CARL DIX is a longtime revolutionary and a founding member of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA. In 1970 Carl was one of the Fort Lewis 6, six GI’s who refused orders to go to Vietnam. He served two years in Leavenworth Military Penitentiary for this stand. In the aftermath of the 1985 bombing of the MOVE house in Philadelphia, Carl initiated the Draw the Line statement, a powerful condemnation of the attack. He co‑founded the October 22nd Coalition to Stop Police Brutality in 1996. Carl coordinated the Katrina hearings of the 2006 Bush Crimes Commission.

Proceeds of this event will benefit Revolution Books in New York City and the Prisoners Revolutionary Literature Fund, which provides subsidized subscriptions to Revolution newspaper and other revolutionary literature to prisoners.

Yesterday was the opening of the Fondation Cartier’s graffiti opening and I am glad to report that it was a success. Local, national and international press were on hand to cover the event alongside many of the featured artists including Coco 144, Part One, Seen, Jon One, Quik, Vitche, Evan Roth, Honet and others. Here are some images from the event. If you are in Paris in the next few months catch the show. I have never seen such a large and well rounded exhibition on the subject anywhere, well worth all the work that went into it.

Devoted to graffiti and street art, the exhibition Born in the Streets—Graffiti will bring to light the extraordinary expansion of an artistic movement that developed in the streets of New York in the early 1970s to rapidly become a world-wide phenomenon.
Today, graffiti has entered the cultural mainstream, crossing over to the realms of studio art, design and advertising. Yet despite its immense popularity, this essentially illegal activity continues to evolve at the periphery of the contemporary art world, its origins and evolution little-known to the general public.
The exhibition at the Fondation Cartier attempts to sketch the general contours of a subject that is vast and complex, encompassing many different ideas, media and movements across its boundaries.

I just received a phone call from Metal Man Ed who was a close friend of Mike Martin aka Iz The Wiz with tragic news of IZ’s death. IZ died as a result of a heart attack in his home state of Florida.

For many of you that do not know, IZ TMB, was a subway god. From his beginnings in the early 70s he painted like there was no tomorrow and came up with one of the most iconic and recognized throw ups in subway writing history. It was by sheer will and determination that he became a true king of New York City. He was king of the lines and not only did throw ups but also whole cars and insides. While many people count IN TOP as the throw up king of all time, in actuality that title belongs to IZ who out painted and out lasted IN and mostly every other writer in the history on New York’s movement.

His style was always wild and psychedic seemingly inspired by some far out LSD trip which took him to another universe. His whole cars reflected this and his walls and drawings also captured his other dimensions of existence. In an era where style mastery was strict and copy cats were plentiful IZ’s style was avant-garde and loose, his blockbusters true works of beauty.

I was lucky enough to be friends with IZ. I meet him in the early 90s way after his subway reign but he was still into it. At the time he was one of us, the guys that were trying to keep graffiti on trains alive, and was painting with SAR, FUZZ, and CAV. They were hitting the lines out in Queens while the rest of us were putting in work elsewhere. Always a bomber, IZ also got into painting freight trains and wall productions in Queens. By the mid-90s he was responsible for making the Phun factory (now 5 pointz) a reality and a place where writers could paint legally with no stress from police. Because of him many writers came out of retirement and the old school get togethers started.

For the past 10 years IZ’s health had been in a steady decline. He left NYC and moved around in order to be able to live affordably and where there was more accessible health care. We all saw a king deteriorating before our eyes but we also saw a man with a great spirit surviving. His illness seemed to come from as a result from all those years in the tunnels breathing toxic spray paint and track dust. The price he paid to be known is immense. He will not however be forgotten.

Iz was a humble and creative spirit. He was a truly giving and cool man. He was always down to help out whenever needed. He will truly be missed.

Mike - IZ may you rest in peace.

So at the moment I am in Europe doing my thing and have missed some of the New York activities that I have been hearing about. One is the Helenbeck gallery exhibition that featured some of my friends like Quik, Blade, Jon One, Lee Quinones, Daze, and Crash. The show looks amazing and I would advise you to check it out if you are in New York. I also recommend buying one of the paintings if you have the paper to do it. Shit, buy more than one.

The Sento book I wrote has finally been released and is available at fine book stores and on amazon.com. The book is the first book in the re-launch of the On The Run series that was well known in the nineties (seen, bates, jepsy books). The other books that have been released are one on the Spanish writer Logan and another on the Cubabrasil project done by Neon, Stone, Cemnoz, Os Gemeos, and others. The books are amazing and very comprehensive. I am very thankful and honored to have been able to work with Sento to get his book done. His contribution to the writing world is immense and much of his work unknown to many as the nature of it is illegal. The man deserves his props.

In 1987 I was a senior in high school and had to ride the 5 train into Flatbush daily. It was a cool ride in that I had many trains to take and got to see lots of what was being painted on the lines. I took the J from Marcy ave to Chambers st and switched to the 5. While waiting I would watch the 6 line as well. I found this video that took me back to those days on the 5. You can see a Joz tag which is nice. I remember names like Bones, Net, and Dondi on the insides as well as RD on the 6s inside.

I came across this video recently and was very pleased to see artists taking into their own hands to eliminate some of the shitty ads that clutter the streets. For too long we have been bombarded with wack messages to buy shit and consume more. Its up to us to change that. Maybe this will give people some ideas on how to take over space in their hood without getting locked up.

Ghost, one of my old writing partners and one of the graffiti world’s most recognizable throw up kings has just released a limited edition book with the clothing company Stussy along with some new shirts. The book showcases some of his bombing activity as well as the illustration style that he is now known for. Cop one online at: Stussy.com.
Here’s stuff I yanked from their site.

STUSSY: What were your earliest memories of graffiti?
GHOST: Just by riding the train, when I would go to Yankee games was when I first started to take notice. Didn’t know what it was or how they did it. I asked my mom and she replied with “don’t bother me with that bullshit.”

Since I grew up on the 7 line the first names that stood out were: Caine-1 Roger, Chino174, Vinny, Dean, Pro-1, Son-1, Fuzz-1 Quik, Killer56 Demo, Joey, Vade, Ex-1, Savage aka KB. Then when I moved back to the Bronx around 79/80, I saw: Blade, Comet, MG’s boys like Mark198, Fritos, Boots119, Russ, Kit17, Mitch77, Dr. Pepper, Ban2, Noc67, Part, Chain3, Skeme and Dez. The trains were bombed inside and out, stations were killed. It was a pretty dope time in the city.

STUSSY: How did you come out with Ghost?
GHOST: I was in a comic book shop looking at a rack and saw a “ghost rider” comic, thought it sounded cool. I went through numerous names trying to come up with something and finally just took that and it stuck.

STUSSY: Can you talk about the photo in the book with the upside down “Ghost” piece? Is there a story behind that?
GHOST: Not really, I just wanted to bug out and have a few laughs.

STUSSY: What is the story behind your favorite picture in the book?
GHOST: There’s a story behind every photo I guess, except the legal walls. There’s no story or fun to that. I would have to say when I did the 2nd story tower on the tracks on 103.

I told Bruz and Bri-1 what I wanted to do. Bruz then took me to Roosevelt hospital (to get my head examined you might think) where they had a 16ft. ladder lying around. So we took that shit and hopped on the train (which was crazy- everyone on the train was staring at us). We got off and I started to paint. I had bucket paint and since I’m not really a bucket paint kinda writer, I threw that shit away and did it with spray. Bruz and Bri-1 were doing a piece on the smaller house and I’m doing this piece on the ladder, trying to pay attention to the train so I wouldn’t get spotted. These kids were on the station running around copping tags and I knew that would be trouble if they got spotted because they would bring the heat on us. So I ran up to see who it was and it was my cousin and some of his friends. I believe Cro-1 and I forget who else was there. They bugged out to see me there, asking me what I was doing. Then I explained that I was doing a top 2 bottom and that you guys were gonna make it hot so you have to leave… Anyway, they left and I finished up my piece.

The next day I heard that when these kids left, they got raided at another station and I forgot who it was that got caught. They said that while thye were in the precinct that a call had come over the radio that there were three men walking the tracks with a huge ladder. At that point, we had finished up and took the ladder with us and went to the next station. We threw the ladder on someone’s roof and split the scene. The next day we rolled up to catch flics when the workers came out the tower to talk with me. They were cool. They were trying to figure out how I got up so high. I think I told them I was smoking angel dust and that’s how I had gotten up so high and laughed. You could see them in the photo hanging out. Yeah, we had a lot of fun back then, the shit we used to get away with.

STUSSY: What’s next for you? Projects? Shows?
GHOST: I have a few things in the works.

FIFTY8 GALLERY
presents
B-Line B-Boy Drawings and Sculpture
by Carlos Mare139 Rodriguez
58 Coles St. Jersey City, NJ. Friday May 1, 2009 7-11pm
Jersey City, NJ. May 1, 2009- “The B-Boy is the physical Graffiti artist, he is the lyrical and
kinetic scratch, he is the break beat manifest, the most modern of all dancers.”
Fifty8 Gallery presents B-Line B-Boy Drawings and Sculpture the anticipated solo
exhibition of renown sculptor, painter, Carlos Mare139 Rodriguez. Inspired by his
childhood era connection to the B-Boy culture this unique series of works are a study in
capturing the dynamic movement of the ‘break’ dancer in what he calls ‘linear still
frames’. Mare139 provokes us to consider through his simplification of shapes and
gestures what gravity defying kinetics are involved in the dance form.
Fascinated as a youth with close association to well known B-Boy crews, he learned the
art from the insiders perspective and well understood the text and physical nature of
B-Boying by being present at countless ‘jams’ or ‘battles’. Correlating the dance to the
abstracted letter forms of graffiti was shared among his circle of influence, several whom
were also graffiti artists, among them Doze Green.
Internationally exhibited and collected his graffiti sculpture works are among the most
important and innovative of the post NYC subway graffiti movement. His most recent
showing is currently in the Grand Palis in Paris for the exhibition Tag au Graffiti.
Mare139 has also designed the 2005 and 2007 Red Bull Beat Battle Awards, The B-Boy
SPY Award for the Rock Steady Crew as well as the Annual BET Award (Black
Entertainment Television).
58 Gallery is easily accessible from NYC by Path. Enter the PATH train at 33rd, 23rd, 14th,
9th, Christopher St. or from World Trade Center in Manhattan and exit after two stops at
Grove Street in Jersey City. From there it is a short walk up Newark Ave. to Coles St.
where you make a right and find the gallery.

Once again traditional media is late to recognize the magic that existed on New York City’s trains and the incredible movie, Style Wars. However, I give props to them for daring to review it now and giving it a great review especially when the politicians and talking heads on TV would have you believe that writing on walls will destroy the city.
Check out the online video review from today’s edition of the New York Times.
