I went to the Guggenheim yesterday to see Anish Kapoor’s installation “Memory”. I’m a really big fan of his work, a lot of it is difficult to document because it mess’s with perception and space, and I think it’s important to experience that in person.
To be honest, I do not like the Guggenheim here in NYC. It’s been awhile since I have been there and this visit reminded me why I don’t like it.
The building is interesting and I like Frank Lloyd Wright, but it is a terrible place to see art, and I have no doubt in my mind that he knew exactly what he was doing. The place made me dizzy. It was hard to get good photos, because you’re not supposed to take photos, and security kept telling me to stop.

The security guard was kind of ghetto, which I found amusing. And here were all these people, including myself, essentially staring into a dark room. I’m a big fan of his work, but I felt this piece was more about size and production cost. I found it a bit uneventful.

I like this painting, Malevich.
All in all, I was reminded of why I do not like the Guggenheim, and I doubt I will be back for some time. The Bracusi’s were banging though.

Stilwerk, Hamburg

Stilwerk in Hamburg is an old factory building that has been beautifully renovated into a gallery of hi-end design and furniture shops.
The renovation work is incredible and I thought the overall concept was great. The original building was a hops factory and they have kept many architectural elements from the original factory. I had the opportunity to paint a piece in their 6th floor lounge and also painted two large engines that were once used in the processing of hops and are now on display on the ground floor.

I spent New years weekend out in Long Island and was really fortunate to see some cool stuff.

Went to an amazing Dan Flavin Museum

Kiki was feeling the Flavins.
Booming.
Wrap city.
After the Dan Flavin spot we checked out a Richard Serra sculpture in someones front yard!
This was an amazing piece to see and experience in the snow storm, so we walked out on to dudes property and checked it out.

The drive home was a little hectic, but all in all a great time.

I had the pleasure of visiting this Shunkaen Bonsai Museum in Tokyo. Really amazing place, highly recommended.
I could have spent all day there, but my time was limited.
They had Bonsai that were 800 years old, worth 500K!

There was so much to see. It was a bit hard to photograph. I could have spent all day there, if you’re in Tokyo it’s well worth the trip.

Fuji-San

Fuji-San a.k.a Mt. Fuji. The highest point in Japan. A very close and easy trip from Tokyo.
When I mentioned I was taking a trip to Mt. Fuji a lot of people in Tokyo would nod and say “Power spot.”
Then, one guy said, “Be careful in the woods, you might see somebody”.
I didn’t understand. “What do you mean?”
He said, “You might see somebodies.” “Some. Bodies”
Still, I didn’t understand, I said, ‘“Bodies? Like dead people?”
He said, “Yes.”
I said, “What the fuck are you talking about?”
Turns out Fuji-San is the spot to go kill yourself. People leave their shoes neatly by the road with a note tucked in them, walk into the woods, and hang themselves. Apparently it’s very common.
One section of the woods is haunted, a compass won’t work, you can suffer from amnesia, and “the ghosts will make you do bad things to yourself.” Also, the ghosts can stay with you and you might bring them home with you. I was a little shook, but decided I had to go, after all it is Fuji-San, the power spot, and I didn’t think any Japanese ghosts had beef with me.
We saddled up went to a spot with an On-sen, a hot spring. So nice. If you’re ever in Tokyo and have the time, it’s highly recommended. Really beautiful.

I just arrived in Japan the other day. My first time in Tokyo, and I’m very happy to be here.
I always like to have a window seat on the plane and enjoy the view. I was really fortunate to notice on the planes monitor that we were flying over Alaska, so I figured I would have a look. Lots of clouds, ice and snow. All the window shades were down and I gave a peek every now and then to see if there was anything interesting. The sky’s began to clear and I noticed a massive mountain that I thought could only be Mount McKinley aka Denali, North America’s largest peak. Might be a little hard to tell in this photo, but it was booming.
Pretty cool for this city boy. It’s hard to imagine people have climbed to the top. Peep the glacier in the foreground.

The KRINK MINI

These past few weeks have been really hectic and difficult for me both personally and professionally.

I am now in Hamburg Germany working on a couple of different projects. One project is with car company BMW- MINI. They have kindly provided me with a MINI COOPER S to have my way with. So far everything has been really cool and everyone is super nice and helpful.
Hamburg is a bit rainy right now, but everyone is really nice, the architecture is interesting, and the food and wine have been great.
The car came out really great! More photos tomorrow after the event.

Moscow Subways 2

The Moscow subway system is really interesting. These photos don’t do it justice. I’m sure there is a ton of info online in regards to the history of the system. Built by the Soviets the subway system is a working monument for the common people.
Most stations are super clean, spotless, I couldn’t believe how clean they are. NYC stations are filthy and dusty. Moscow’s stations don’t have the dusty grime that is ubiquitous in NYC stations. Trains came quickly and efficiently, never a problem. The trains themselves were really old and seemed to work just fine.
The stations pictured below are regular stations packed with people and heavily used everyday, not just for tourists like San francisco cable cars, really impressive.
Almost all the platforms were about double to triple the width of a station here in NYC and the ceilings were much higher.

Above is a relatively simple station, and even here the materials are impressive. Materials at almost every station I visited were top notch, marble, granite, and other types of stone expertly laid out and very well maintained.
Impressive metal work.
Some stations look like the halls of old museums.
Details were amazing. Notice no grime and dust.

Station dedicated to Dmitry Mendeleyev inventor of The Periodic Table of Elements. I didn’t get a photo, but another version of these “molecule” inspired lamps were also on the platform where the trains stopped, very nicely done.
Insides look the same as anywhere.

The Moscow subway system is hands down the most beautiful in the world.
The stations are super deep! NYC has deep stations too, but on average the stations in Moscow are 3 - 4 times as deep. I was told this is because The Soviet military built the system.
I could not believe how clean the stations are and how efficient the trains ran. I never waited more than 5 minutes at the most.
I will post more photos this week if not later today.

Faces & Laces Moscow 2009.
I had a really great time in Moscow. I was invited by Faces & Laces to lecture, paint, show products and photography. Everyone was super cool and very interested in hearing and seeing about Krink and NYC.
Faces & Laces is an exhibition to show young Russians what’s happening with certain brands and “Streetwear” culture. It’s about exposure and education.

According to a lot of the people I spoke with, many Russians are totally unfamiliar with what many westerners often take for granted. The history of skating, graffiti, punk rock, hip-hop, etc is very new to them.
Many Russians speak limited English, they explore things on the internet but don’t always fully understand them, and it can be difficult for them to travel outside of Russia. I was told that it’s very hard for a Russian girl to get a visa to the US, because they think they will come here and try to marry an American and stay here.

Every Russian I met was very interested in the world and really hungry for information about everything from fashion to politics. I think after years and years of Soviet rule the young generation is really optimistic and open minded.
According to them, Russia is still trying to find itself and it’s collective voice and direction, because in Soviet times the government gave them the direction.
They were hit by very hard economic times in the 90’s after the fall of the Soviet Union and then by an ever widening gap between rich and poor.
Many of them also feel a sense of instability, that the government could change things on them overnight. So while they are optimistic, they have this sense of caution and to not go too far too fast.
The organizers of the event had to pay off the cops, the security, the fire dept, it was really crazy, it’s all about bribes and paying a “Vig”.
I had to pay to go to the bathroom, the lady was talking to me in Russian and I didn’t know what she wanted, a young kid was like, “10 Rubles. You must pay for everything. This is Russia. Sorry.”

If the government stays stable, Moscow is going to be a very cool place for creativity. Russia has to open up a bit more to make business and importing goods and ideas easier, the people want it, and there is endless potential there.
I highly recommend a trip there. More and more western cities are becoming the same, local flavor is on it’s way out. Global trends are growing faster via the internet. Moscow still has local flavor and an edgy feeling. Get it while it lasts.

Moscow, as I will continue to say, is a very interesting place, with a lot of things going on. For example here is a sample of North Korean money. Somewhere in Moscow there is a very large room full of this, millions, if not billions. If you read the papers, this can mean only one thing.
For those that don’t read the papers, this is all about arms dealers. No drugs, no cheap electronics, no fashion, cars, or diamonds. It’s basically impossible to go to North Korea, their money would be useless anywhere and the only thing they are selling is illicit arms, in this case to Russian buyers. Who then might pass it on to, I don’t know, Iran? Who might then pass it on to, Hamas? Highest bidder? Much bigger than my little world. The story behind this paper is very interesting and this is the closest I have ever been to this sort of thing.

I just got back home from Moscow. I had a great time, experienced excellent Russian hospitality, and overall it was a very very interesting experience. Moscow is a major city and there is definitely much more to be seen than what I was able to see in the 10 days I was there. I have a lot of work to do, but I will try my best to edit down some cool photos and post them here in the next few days. I highly recommend a trip to Moscow as it is a very interesting cultural experience for an American. Moscow is not as dangerous or difficult as some might have you believe. It’s cool and people are very interested in what’s going on in the world. Some small advice, go when it is warm.

Melbourne had a more urban feel than Sydney. Sydney felt very beachy and sunny, Melbourne had a hustle and bustle thing going on. Melbourne reminded me a lot of San Francisco, both the weather and the size of the city. There was a lot of graffiti everywhere, and a lot of little alleyways similar to Barcelona.
Everyone is really nice, the food is good, and things are pretty chill. Much more of a walking city, easy to get lost, but being lost isn’t an issue.
I had a show at Don’t Come a gallery and shop in Melbourne, really cool people. Thanks Misha and Tim.

Back from Australia aka OZ, and for those of you who don’t know, (I didn’t) They pronounce Aussie, Ozzy.
Flew into Sydney first. Sat next to an obese person, very tight seating, at first it was annoying and I was bummed, but the flight was full so there was nothing to be done, LA - Sydney, 15 hours! We touched the whole time. Once I put my mind to it, it was fine, kind of like central booking. That’s just life.
I painted the entrance to the brand new Redbull offices in Sydney as part of the opening of the “No Comply” show.
Everyone in Sydney was super, super cool. Redbull people were mad cool and everything went real smooth.

I’d never been to Australia before this trip, I thought it would be culturally closer to Britan, but it reminded me a lot of California. Good food, open minded people, chill vibe.

I’ve been so busy I can’t keep up. I just got back from Australia and want to post flicks from the trip, but have been totally swamped with work that I have not had the time to edit and retouch the photos.
Australia was really cool, good times all around, really nice people. I hope to post more photos from the trip and the shows soon.

Alex from Niceproduce.com was the trip/show/event organizer and my most gracious host.
We did a Tee for both “No Comply” a show organized by Alex featuring different artists from around the world which opened in Sydney, and for the show at Don’t Come gallery in Melbourne.

I painted in Praha, Czech Republic recently for namesfest.net. They flew in a bunch of artists from Europe, Japan, Brasil, Russia, and the US. I met a lot of really cool people, and the trip gave me a refreshing perspective on things from politics to world history.
The US is very insulated from the rest of the world. Europeans especially have a long history of living together with different cultures and understanding each other. They seem to be very aware of and interested in world events, history, and culture beyond their own home countries.
Traveling, if you have the time and money, is a must.

Sometimes it takes me awhile to retouch and edit all the photos. Here are a few for now.

New book by Daniel Mason on package design and materials.
Daniel did the production for the Krink Queens box set back in 2002. He did an excellent job and turned it around quickly.
Box sets are hand made. Cloth bound boards, foil stamp logo, foam insert, and magnetic closure. Limited to 100 pieces.
The book has many other interesting projects he’s worked on.
