Back to Back Jammies- Al Green

An incredible live performance! His vocal skills are second to none. Not only can he sing he has mad swagger too. Watch him walk away from the high note, he just had to step back and check himself!

If you had any doubt about his genius! This goes out to the honey dips and heartbreakers.

WU Tang Clan aint nothin to fuk wit London Style

Tonite I went to see Shaolins Finest WU TANG CLAN blow it up at Shepherds Bush Empire in London. In true fashion they were well late and kept us waiting anxiously, once they came out on stage it was half the clan, RZA kicked it off with Meth and Raekwon. Meth seemed vexed because the rest of his band mates were not comin on...I figured some family beef was going on cause he was right pissed, kickin shit and pacing around. The crowd was amped up, it was off the hook I thought my balcony was gonna drop thats how jumpin it was. Finally the rest of the Clan walked on but you can tell by the body chemistry that something wasnt right. RZA, Inspecta Deck,Meth and Raekwon kept it live and got the rest to finally fall in line then it just went ballistic, I mean WU Tang 36 Chambers ballistic!!! I have to say I was impressed that after 15 years WU Tang Clan is still nothin to fuk wit!!! Meth was surfin on the crowd and at one point walking on top of them. They did an ODB set which set it off something lovely, the crowd was rawkus and loud as fuk. Each member had a solo moment and delivered, Meth flipped it as he always does. It was well worth the wait and trip to see these brothers perform their classics especially C.R.E.A.M which Rae switched up to P.R.E.A.M for Pounds Rule Everything Around Me.

HAZE at Hong Kong MOCA

image

JULY 14, 2008 (HONG KONG/NEW YORK):  Eric Haze was an essential part of the collective of
New York artists that brought graffiti as an art form into the arena of art galleries and media in the
early ’80s.  Haze has also been one of the leading innovators in the visual development of hip-hop
culture as it emerged as the definitive style and language of 1980-1990s popular culture.

In Full Circle, Haze transforms the gallery into a bold environment of his signature hand styles and
letterforms, and a display of free associative approach to shape and color.  Developing the show for
almost a year, the majority of the works were produced in the past six months.  The exhibition will
include 15 drawings on paper (mostly charcoal and pastel), 15 large-scale hand-painted acrylic
canvases, 10 archival silkscreen prints on canvas, plus several standalone one-off pieces created in
both paint and ink.

July 24 – August 8, 2008
Opening Reception: Wednesday, July 23
(3-5pm: Press Session / 9-11pm: General Reception)

Installation Unveiling Finally!!!

My residency at Brighton University concluded with the completion of the installation in the galleries. It was an incredible experience to finally realize a concept I had 22 years ago. I could not have done this with out the support and investment of many who gave of themselves either in time and resources. Off the top I want to acknowledge some folks, Letty for recommending me as the artist in residence, Indy and Kevin and their volunteers who have been producing the Brighton Hip Hop Festival/Rising Styles going on 5 yrs, Brighton University- Gez, Heidi, Dave, Steve, Gaby and Toby, Red Bull- Katya, Matt, Steffen, and the guy who drove the WU StyleWriter from Berlin to Brighton. I especially want to thank my assistants- Naqeeb, Toby, Jennifer, Antonio, Jill, MC Outsider. This project, more than a piece of art was a process, an experience, a collaboration not unlike much of the subway painting of my early years. I couldnt do this alone so not only do I give thanks to the folks that made this happen but to those writers who paved the path for such forward thinking ideas to happen. That said, are you ready for whats next......

Mare139 Lecture

image

On Friday I had my lecture and presentation on the evolution of Graffiti art. My starting point was the caves of Lascaux as an example of mans first primitive instinct to write on walls, to the catacombs of Rome , Egyptian Hieroglyphics and the infamous Kilroy was here. From this starting point I discussed the influence early Philadelphia graffiti had on NYC and the rise of Taki 183 and Stay High 149 and the evolution of the signature into a bubble style by Phase 2. I also spoke of the changes not just in style but the early usages of color palettes and patterns. I moved on to Style Masters and the style wars on the trains and ultimately thru methods, techniques, as well as street art and media bombing. I also discussed the importance of the Red Bull Outsides project and the BackJumps Live 3 Exhibit. I wrapped it up discussing my evolution from style writer to sculptor in 1985.

Installation day 4- Dismantle and Reflect

Today was a good day to be me. After a well deserved sleep I was back at work with my assistants dismantling and peeling back the protective skin off the installation. Several amazing things came forward, one was a square plane that reflected the exterior, this proved to be a good starting point for me as it also had a reflection from the interior window pane that suggested it was penetrating into the space. It also brought in the architectural scaffolding which I like. As we disassembled I decided to reassemble with a hardware that allowed me to keep the work as individual pieces rather than riveting them together, it also created open spaces that allowed for even more light to be absorbed. Once the skin was removed off the work it just lit the room up and absorbed it. We decided to end the day by completing the extension from the floor thru the wall into the next gallery and back, it works well as a spacer between the audience and the work but more importantly it reflects the installation beautifully. Tomorrow I will continue extending into the gallery space in unexpected ways and adding yet another secret effect to all this. I also have a lecture and presentation on NYC Graffiti history, the Outsides Project and the Process of this project. It should be really good as I am feeling rather reflective......

Installation Day 3 Penetrating Space

image

image

image

image

Last night was a real challenge, after working for hours with no direction, soley on impulse, my sculpture got the best of me, I left drained but confident about what was discovered to potentially take this to the next level. I was able to pierce to the other side of the wall, but what was even more amazing was expanding out to the floor up through the wall and back. The work on the floor reflects the sculpture and the room. Next level...you cant fuck with me at this point! This is what a Style Master exemplifies, innovation, adaptation and context. As I stated before I am channeling the past masters and feel more secure in my space as not just a sculptor but as a style writer. Tomorrow will be even more of the same and the next day will be....
