Peep out this amazing site where a photographer and Graff heads went to visit Chernobyl well after the melt down. An amazing and disturbing essay.

I got into an email exchange recently with a certain someone that was disputing my contribution and innovation with the sculptures. In the annals of book history none of us sculptors are regarded so I forgive the ignorance but I will drop a pearl for him and others. In 1984 True 222 (Phase2) created what is regarded as the first graffiti related sculpture, it was a large scale steel sculpture that was groundbreaking, it now sits in the Jacob Javits Center in NYC. This is the first large scale sculpture on record. He has told me that he had done a wooden sculpture back in the 70s as well. So I regard him as the first person to try sculpture. I come in second to that with the start of Wild Style letter sculptures in 1985. My work was focused on the direct and deliberate evolution of train pieces. The series that followed were all large train panel scale painted letters and eventually and rather quickly I became sort of a constructivist Graffiti writer and it showed in my works without deliniation from by Graff background, it was a natural evolution as one can see through the history of art and Graff. Ive been a sculptor going on 22 years I believe there is no one out there in our Graff culture who has focused commitment to sculpture in this manner, or articulated it through the many styles I have. Rammellzee was also exploring sculpture around this time but I am not certain of what it was or looked like, he also is highly regarded as a pioneer of sculptural letters. There are now many good sculptors finally jumping in from here to Europe who have taken the challenge of sculpting Graff, I encourage that and thrive on it, this is why I created the WU StyleWriter sculpture in Germany in order to publicly challenge writers and people alike. As for the discussion that prompted this posting I realize one thing that regardless of what is and who is popular, our history can and has been written by us for us and if this is a bit of HISTORY…so it is stated and WRITTEN.

Carlos Mare 139 Rodriguez is an internationally acclaimed artist/sculptor and pioneer in the art and culture of Hip Hop. Leading his generation into a new world of possibility with style writing sculpture, he pioneered a vision that had, before him, no reference outside of the painted subways of the time. Throughout his career as a sculpter, Mare 139 has consistently brought innovation to the genre’s aesthetic and vocabulary. Mare 139 earned the prestigeous 2006 Webby Award for his launch of the Hip Hop documentary Style Wars website. Style Wars has also garnered the COMMARTS/Communication Arts Award, Horizon Interactive Award, as well as SXSW/South by Southwest Interactive. Not only an award winner but an award designer, Mare 139 designed and created the award for the annual BET/Black Entertainment Award show, which is given annually to entertainers, athletes and actors. Recipients include Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jay Z, Prince Snoop Dog, Beyonce, Kobe Bryant, Usher, Serena Williams and many others. He also designed a G-Unit Award expressly for 50Cent given to him by fashion designer Marc Ecko. Other award projects include the 2005 and 2007 Red Bull Beat Battle Award and more recent the SPY Award for the 30th Anniversary of the Rock Steady Crew. In 2006-07 Mare 139 worked closely with Director/Actor Robert DeNiro on the film The Good Shepherd as a documenter of ‘the making of the movie’ and as member of Mr. DeNiro’s editing team. His writing has been published in Martha Coopers brilliant photo book Street Play that documents the imaginative ‘play’ of children in the streets of NYC in the late 1970’s. His writings capture the creative play and dangers of his youth in the South Bronx.
