All thats fit to print….

Dondi next to Duchamp? Im sure my friend Dondi (RIP) would have never even imagined it. While at Borders book store my eye caught Dondi’s book and it struck me that there in front of me was a big part of my childhood and my creative inspiration in book form. It saddened me in a way that life is unfair and unjust yet it lifted me knowing that someone also saw the brilliance of his life and took to celebrate it in a book for us to share. Why does a great artist have to die to be an even greater artist? Lets question who dictates that. Dondi White has a legacy that has profoundly changed many lives, including mine, his work just like Duchamp creates schools of artists so it is fitting to me that they are hugged up together in and amongst many of the greats.

Also on the shelves were many books about graff and street art. Mascots and Mugs had face display among them, so big up to Chino and Todd. All this publishing of art and culture adds to the complex dialogue going on, it also relates back to my postings in so being that emotions get mixed about the integrity of so much of it. Thankfully
Mascots and Mugs digs deeper than most and covers alot of historical moments and also has interviews with the people who played a role. Not to discount anyones efforts on the shelf, there is plenty of room as one can see, but there are alot of hard bound books that serve as nothing more than scrap books of painted walls. Also as one publisher points out, they are by and large terribly designed to the point where the works are not coherent. I agree, I have hated most graff publications for the weak remedial layouts that fail to highlight the quality and details of a well painted production.

What is positive in all this is that we have an opportunity to uncover and discover our own heritage which has always been marginalized. This is empowerment and democracy at its finest.

The wailng about a wall…

image

image

I was recently invited to attend the viewing of the ‘Wall’ recently by an old friend Fab 5 Fred, who was and continues to bridge the culture of Graff and hip hop across many planes. This wall is a real find in many ways, it represents the migration of graff artists of the movement connecting with the downtown art scene in the early 80’s and it also has a backstory which is critical in understanding how we have managed to get to where we are today in some respect. The ‘Wall’ which in fact was not displayed but a photo representation has in my opinion less aesthetic quality than historic importance, given that at that time we were producing far more prolific works. It points to a time and place in which so many important things were happening in the culture on and off the trains. Riding the coat tails of the movement came Basquiat, Haring, Scharf and others whom intermingled with writers like Fab and Lee, Futura and others. While these artists were in art school and also making their presence felt on the downtown scene they saw that this movement was vital and liberating to them as outsiders. Basquiat was an anomoly in the group being that he in many ways was a primitive artist with highbrow ambitions.

I like many celebrate the find as I would a Taki 183 or Super Strutt tag, I recall excavating layups and yards to see how many new and old tags I could find. This event was in its presentation, much like the Banksy show, stirred up mixed emotions. As Allen pointed out the only real cats from the culture of that era were Fab, Lee and myself, the rest of the crowd were mostly tony white folks, some artists and who knows who. I did catch up with Marc Ecko who has long supported graff and leveraged it to build his brand, though he himself is not a writer he has supported the culture in many ways. What struck me as uncomfortable is that the representation in all this still seems to revolve around people like Basquiat, and Haring, while in front of the wall their names came up constantly and I was like in my head- you never heard of the Fab 5! Thats real yo! Still it was what it was and my man Fab 5 Fred is so down by law that he would be the only one to draw me to see a ‘wall’.

Allen and I had an incredible dialogue about the show, its good and bad, and we both agree that it is a meaningful find but at the same time I feel some conflict as to how this is all playing out again within and without the world of art and money. We see this type of thing playing out across the board in the culture and by and large it does not benefit us or at times correctly represent us. In this case I hope it sheds light and benefits the efforts of Fred and others who were really putting in the work. Ive been there before folks, Ive lived thru it all in the 80s and saw these folks dart in and out like bandits so to me it will always be suspect unless some official cats like Fab, Lee, Futura or others who were down are in the house.

- After thought- while at the show a part of me was guilty of not getting to go see a true graffiti masters show, Part 1- TDS, weather and transportation didnt work out but I will get there, his work is also very important to this culture but receives little fanfare in comparison, if I were asked who is more relevant in graffiti culture Basquiat, Haring, Scharf (note- these artists were branded by the media as graffitist, they themselves have unequivocally at one point or another let it be known that they werent), or even Banksy I would without hesitation say Part1.

BANKSY- Dont Believe the HYPE!!!

image

Although I like the works of fellow writer? street artist? Provocateur? Banksy, I am some what puzzled about the hype surrounding him so I went to his NYC opening, which was or wasnt sanctioned by him. Since I would like to believe that he is still renegade I will assume this is the clever workings of opportunists who are banksying on the sudden rise of his valued art. The works were what they were, slick commentary illustrated sarcastically by low tech means. The show is small and not well laid out and is not cohesive, it was random which leads me to believe this was as sold to the public- acquired work being resold. His wit is by far is his greatest asset only matched by his daring to do shit others wont. I would like to think that if he did have a real show in NYC he would have come here undercover and really put some public work out there to provoke us. The show is nothing more than works we have seen already, I wasnt even sure what to expect considering his track record is mainly on the streets not in galleries. I was turned off by the fact that the gallery had a pile of his shirts on the floor and made people get on their knees to look at them and only to be told that they were $50 bucks!!!! I ran into my man who nicked 2 of them out of spite! I wont mention who else made off with one. Back in the day artist gave shit away like candy, it served to support the show and hype up the artist, but these Chimps aint havin it, this is strictly business folks. I aint mad but I aint no fool. Or maybe this is all a part of the sick joke, that I am not aware of.
