Books/Film- We Come at Night 2006
In August of 2006 I took part in a project which I feel is one of the more important Graffiti and Street Art related events in the last decade. The outsides project was completely illegal yet it was a corporate sponsored venture. It was impressive on so many levels, with a crew of artists arriving from all over the globe, we all set out to confront the current public and creative debate of what is legitimate art and at what point do you sell out or is it selling out or just ‘corporate bombing’ as I coined it years ago. We have evolved it into a culture that still relies on the public if not ourselves to critic and observe our work but what does it mean when you deliberately do it with big bucks behind you? Where do Brand ‘YOU and Brand ‘Them’ meet to get the exposure and execution desired? This project brought up a lot of heated debate and in the end was successful at provoking us and the Public to discuss the current strategies of contemporary Graffiti artists and street artists and Brand corporations, in this case Red Bull.
I placed a large scale sculpture illegally in a public park http://outsides.de/artist/Mare-139.html it turned out to get a really good reception until the city caught wind and planned to remove it, but when they returned in the morning it was gone! Vanished. Where did it go???
