Installation Day 2- Assaulting Space
Today was a busy day setting up the production in the gallery space with my assistants and getting the necessary hardware to start construction. I had no idea what I was going to do. I had no drawings, no plan other than to work with the materials in hand. The decision to go freestyle was a good exercise for me and the students who were helping, it afforded me the opportunity to dig into what I understood thus far about working with forms in space, in particular graffiti related iconography. What is amazing about all this so far is how I had to adapt to conditions on the ground. I had requested a certain material to work with and I got another. The unexpected change presented a benefit to what I was intending because it was polished stainless steel that has a mirror like finish, also we didnt expect the university to have scaffolding going up outside but given that and the material provided it allows me to take my approach even further. The reflection of the material, which you wont see until I peel off the protective skin, will reflect whats going on inside and outside the room. This will be amazing as I can already see how the first cut piece suggests the penetration of space from the outside into the interior, see video post, this effect has established my adaption to both environments. What will come tomorrow will continue this relationship, what will come the following day will be....
