Jaybo Monk Recap

Jaybo Monk has put together an impressive body of work for his latest exhibition at Circle Culture Gallery in Berlin. Running with the Hunted as titled is a strong metaphor for life in what ever form it takes, in this case Jaybo presents new paintings, poems, and sculpture installations that tie it back to the title.

One can only assume the true meaning of his works as there are many stories embedded into the paintings or perhaps they are windows for us to steal a moment of that story. I don’t know but its all done with powerful imagery that can be seductive, religious, or a body wrestling with itself.

I liked the sculptor installation of the life size figure who is trapped in a corner with many arrows plunging into his back in the throws of an inevitable fate. I felt that it was one of two things that could come of it, they would become wings or he was lovestruck by a tribe of cupids.

Theres a great deal to appreciate in these works by Jaybo Monk, the best thing a painter can do for you as a viewer is transport you, open up your imagination, your appreciation or critic, this is what this show accomplishes.

seems doomed to an inevitable fate
