Spy Award for Rock Steady Crew Anniversary 2007
I created a new award for the 30th Rock Steady Crew Anniversary, it is to be given to B-Boy Abstrak. The award named after B-Boy SPY was designed in honor of the contributions he has bestowed on the Hip Hop culture with his dance. This is the first B-Boy sculpture I have executed and by the looks of it not the last. The style is based on the abstracted and extracted elements of line, motion and form of B-boy dancers. Over the past couple of years I have developed this new visual language that I feel brings together the many discussions with B-Boys and even my own failed attempts at trying the dance form. Those that have followed my work in this area will see how the drawings have also suggested sculpture, this piece I think captures that potential.
For some reason I have a knack for award design, I like to think of them as sculpture awards because I approach it as sculpture first then as a presentation to be given. This piece has significant weight and integrity. I wish I could keep it but I cant.
