Nice video of what the creative mind is capable of regardless of ones disability. Thanks to Jeff Newelt for sharing this.

Volvo debuts “Blind Preview” video of the still-secret S60 car.
The Swedish car company hired blind painter Esref Armagan to depict the car, which won’t be fully revealed until 2010 and is described by Volvo’s design director Peter Horbury as having “a much more dynamic and sculpted form than any previous Volvo.”

If you happen to be on Allen and Delancy Street look up and you will see my artwork for the Red Bull BC-1 Battle. I had no idea where it was going to be painted until Haze sent me a wk in progress shot. I went down to take flicks and it looks amazing, what was more amazing was when I turned around and I saw these two dudes all painted up and I recognized one of them and lo and behold it was Baby168 TVS and Charlie his partner who were painting my piece! Man I was floored, these cats were so spot on with this and they put in a lot of love on this piece.

Baby168 knew it was my work too so he was stoked about working it. It was an honor for me to have these guys translate my work, they really went all out, and unlike MTA they put my tag in as it was in the original artwork (more on me versus MTA to come), I was glad that someone like Francisco (BY168), who in his own right made a name for himself on the trains took his talent to loftier heights. This supports my argument about the current discrimination and prejudice regarding practitioners of the art and the institutions and media business that overlook the gift that graffiti is to many kids interested in artistic expression. You never know how far it can take you nor what or who it may inspire. More to come as all this is hitting NYC real hard right now in every station and boro. This is the new Style War!

I caught this interview on http://www.ilovegraffiti.de with Jürgen Feuerstein about the paint brand Molotow. Interesting read I wanted to pass along. Also found a dope piece on Rich 2 RTW ROC and his role as a teacher. You make me proud brother! Good digs for today…

Commentary: ‘But what’s a Latino?’
By Raquel Cepeda
Special to CNN

This is a recent piece by Raquel published on CNN.com. Powerful and thought provoking…

NEW YORK (CNN)—Let’s all pretend to be the astrologer Walter Mercado for a moment. Say we predict that the Obama administration’s master plan to engage people of Latino/Hispanic/Spanish origin proves to be effective.

Let’s say that along with strategic partners Telemundo and the Census Bureau, they somehow manage to corral the millions of “Latinos” into filling out the 2010 census forms in April. Say the idea of plot-kneading the message into an already half-baked yet inexplicably popular telenovela, “Mas Sabe el Diablo,” wins over the hearts and minds of “Latinos” everywhere.

But what’s a Latino?

Editor’s note: Raquel Cepeda is an award-winning journalist, documentary filmmaker and former editor of Russell Simmons’ Oneworld magazine. Cepeda wrote and directed the feature documentary, “Bling: A Planet Rock,” about hip-hop’s obsession with diamonds and its effect on the decade-long conflict in Sierra Leone. Cepeda is based in New York, where she was born to Dominican parents.

This just in- the Red BUll BC-ONE Battle posters came in and they look like a ‘snatcher’, the die cuts look great as does the printing, if you can get your hands on one its a good poster to have. They also flipped my graffix a bit on the promo logo, nice look leaving the tag too.

On Friday before my talk and presentation I attended the Part One Blackbook Master Class. There was a good turn out of writers and non writers who came to take the session in order to learn about the usage of markers on paper and also about style writing. Joining us were Style Masters RIFF 170, NOC167, Original pioneer Snake1, DOC TC5, IVORY, KET and others. For me it was a grand honor to have NOC167 in my presence when I spoke of the evolution of my work, both he and PART were influential in my development, I was fortunate to have NOC167 offer a few words about himself and his work and also to have him by my side so I can express some of my gratitude and highlight some of his accomplishments through the work of my generation of writers who followed his lead, among them KEL1st, DONDI, DURO, MIN, DOZE, CRASH and many others. Funny that as a grown man I still have such regard for an artist of his stature, he may not have the same output or capacity but it lives through me and the generation of writers who practice the art of style writing.

A Conversation with Jacob Kimvall and Carlos “Mare 139” Rodriguez

As graffiti in New York City is increasingly criminalized, in other parts of the world Graffiti’s rawest and finest elements are finding their way into public spaces and major arts institutions recognizing the contributions of street art on popular culture and everyday cultural aesthetics. The conversation will explore the work of Carlos “Mare 139” Rodriguez and his evolving relationship to public space, galleries and the media also the work of art historian Jacob Kimvall, based in Stockholm, Sweden Mr. Kimvall has been working with various municipalities to preserve critical public spaces with historical significance for the Swedish Graffiti movement.

We humbly ask that you join us for what we hope is the beginning of a meaningful conversation around the historical implications of New York City’s Graffiti movement and how that visual arts culture is alive and thriving today.

In nine years Hip-Hop Theater Festival (HHTF) has grown into one of the most important outlets showcasing Hip-Hop arts in the country, featuring dance, theater, performance, the visual arts and music devoted to urban culture.

Lee Quinones “Only in New York” Art Car to be Auctioned at Barrett-Jackson by Ford Motor Company

Las Vegas — Ford Motor Company will auction a 2009 Ford Flex art car, Lee Quinones’ “Only in New York”, at the Barrett Jackson auto auction in Las Vegas, Nevada Saturday, October 10, 2009. All proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Urban Arts Partnership and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Ford Flex has staked a claim on the streets as a true American original. So has Lee Quinones. He emerged from the New York City subway art movement in the 1970’s to international prominence in the arts and in popular culture. Appearing and starring in important films like “Wild Style”, his work is part of the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum, the Groningen Museum and the Museum of the City of New York.

“Only in New York” is Quinones’ vision of the Ford Flex as an urban social gallery, a reflection of both modern day New York and folkloric aspects of Big Apple culture. The exterior of the Flex art car is hand-painted using spray paint and clear coats.

The hood of the vehicle shows a typical New York street filled with those chasing success. The driver’s side pays homage to the constant movement of the city that never sleeps. The passenger side presents imagery of the controversial and tumultuous activity of the economy that is rocking the city and the chaotic images of the past decades that created cultural dynamics.

Features include a hand-painted center console, a band of poetry on the doors and headrests featuring the renowned “LEE” signature tag.

The “Only in New York” Flex was commissioned by Ford along with Automobile Magazine to express the diverse nature and customization possibilities of this groundbreaking new crossover. Unveiled at SEMA in 2008, this art car was instrumental in the naming of Flex as the SEMA Design Awards “Most Accessory Friendly SUV”.

All proceeds from the sale of this car will be donated to two great organizations:
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) which is dedicated to finding a cure for diabetes
Urban Arts Partnership which strengthens public schools by providing arts-based solutions to urban educational issue
The video opens with Ken Swift articulating the importance of history and need for understanding the conditions surrounding the birth of the art form in order to progress. I will leave it to you to view it and learn. I can state as an old friend of Ken Swift and Mr. Wiggles their contributions and discussions with me over the years has had a profound impact on my work as an artist, and I cant even break. Much respect to their efforts and continued contributions.

Hip Hop has suffered another loss with the passing of Mr. Magic today. The Super Rockin mix master whose career is a testament to the development of Rap and popular music has left the DJ booth of life. His works carry on with us in the RAP ATTACK series of LPs and of course our off the beat box recorded cassettes, dust them off and give them another play in memorial.

I recieved this email from DJ Premier a good friend of his so I thought I would share his words with you-

I WANT TO SEND OUT THE UTMOST RESPECT AND CONDOLENCES TO THE MEMORY OF JOHN RIVAS——aka MR. MAGIC

HE PASSED AWAY THIS MORNING OF A HEART ATTACK…..

TRUE HIP HOP HEADS KNOW THAT HIS HISTORY IS SO LONG
DUE TO HIM BEING THE FIRST RAP MIXSHOW TO EVER BE ON COMMERCIAL RADIO ON NEW YORK’S WBLS—(107.5) WITH MARLEY MARL AND FLY TY IN 1982-1984…....THEN WENT ON TO WHBI IN OCTOBER OF 1984 AND THEN
BACK TO WBLS in 1985 and WDAS in Philly SIMULTANEOUSLY

HE PAVED THE WAY FOR ALL RADIO STATIONS THAT EVER DID MIXSHOWS AND ALSO SPARKED THE CAREER OF BOOGIE DOWN PRODUCTIONS DUE TO THE DISS HE SHOWED WHEN THEY CAME TO SHOP THEIR DEMO TO HIM AND WAS TURNED AWAY WHICH THEN SPARKED “SOUTH BRONX” AND “THE BRIDGE IS OVER”.......

HE WAS KNOWN FOR HIS DIRECT AND SARCASTIC ATTITUDE ON THE AIR AND EVERY ARTIST WANTED HIS APPROVAL WHEN IT CAME TO BREAKING NEW RECORDS….....HE EVEN HAD SONGS DEDICATED TO HIM BY THE LEGENDARY WHODINI—(“MR. MAGIC’S WAND”) WHICH WAS SURPRISINGLY PRODUCED BY ONE OF MY FAVORITE ARTISTS THOMAS DOLBY…....

SHOUTS OUT TO MARLEY MARL AND FLY TY FOR THE CORRECT INFORMATION ON THIS…...

REST IN PEACE MR. MAGIC…..........DJ PREMIER

As many seasoned graffiti writers know or should know ROC or RocStars was and is an elite group of style writers from NYC who were holding NYC down at a high pitch from the late 70s to the mid 80s. Among the most famous of our group were COS207, SHY147, KEL First, DURO, MIN ONE, and many others who were affiliate crews like TFP, TC5, CIA, RTW, TVS etc. Our focus was in tradition of style writing and whole car productions, hi impact colors and best style post TDS.

Adding Keen to the roster of new generation style writers to the crew has proven to both inspire him and us here but also keep the legacy ongoing. I have posted his work numerous times so we can witness the evolution of his art and his unrelenting desire to be the best he can be in the game. Originally an OG Londoner he holds UK down and is a part of their history which many are not familiar with, before there was Berlin there was London, I can attest to this when I was there in 85 when the scene was still going hard. There will be an upcoming show at RareKind Gallery which covers this history, I will post that soon too.

One of the great responsibilities and challenges that faces the graffiti culture is how it gets properly documented and who gets the authority to do so. With so many scrap books abound on the subject I am pleased to see that many of the best ones are coming from within the culture itself, that we ourselves have taken to documenting and owing up to our art history. With the release of Graffiti New York, the second Edition of Piece book by Sacha Jenkins and Chino BYI and the recently posted Part book by Ket One, it is great to see the creative and intellectual empowerment of my generation reclaim its legacy, this is an example of how we are no longer bound to second guessing editors and shoddy production values. I hope to see more and more specific ones on artists and their processes. Congrats to Deal, Spar, Chino, Sacha, Ket, Henry, Marty, Akim.

Former graffiti artist Eric “DEAL CIA” Felisbret has spent over 30
years documenting New York City graffiti. Luke “SPAR ONE” Felisbret is
a graffiti artist and historian whose work has been widely exhibited.
Together they launched http://www.at149st.com, a documentation of New York
City graffiti’s culture and history. James Prigoff is coauthor of the
classic Spraycan Art. He lives in Sacramento, California.

“Decades after the movement globalized, New York is still the mecca of
graffiti culture. Painting there is a badge of honor, with graffiti
artists from around the globe making pilgrimages to New York for that
purpose. This is the city where it all began, yet few know the back
story. Graffiti New York fills that gap, detailing the concepts,
aesthetics, ideals, and social structures that have served as a
cultural blueprint for graffiti movements across the world. The book
features approximately 1,000 images, complemented by texts by the
authors and relevant players in the movement, as well as descriptive
graphics and sidebars. Ranging from the birth of simple signature tags
to today’s vibrant murals, and covering the ups and downs of the
movement, the culture’s value system, its social framework, the
various forms of graffiti, and significant artists and crews, Graffiti
New York is a major addition to Abrams’ superb books on graffiti art.”

Today as the skies weep over NYC I was reminded about where I was and how I felt about the tragedy before me. I lived within a 5 block distance of WTC and as I laid in bed I heard the sky ripped from what was an airplane that hit the tower. Why I knew this was catastrophic enough to jump out of bed get a camera and hit the roof I dont know, I dont know how with all my heartbreak how I managed to stand witness but I did. Probably the single most tragic event of our lifetime was at my door step, I saw what the world saw, after the fact I kindly put it away in a safe place in my heart and mind but I will never ever forget!

My prayers for the dead and the families both here and abroad as the repercussions of this event still tallies up lives 8 years after. I am hopeful that the bureaucratic bullshit stalling in memorializing the fallen will finally be honored. Many of you may have lost a friend or family or your innocence, naivete or even hope, let me remind you that it is in face of such great challenges we rise up together and that through this a veil was lifted for us to deal with some really powerful stuff about how we live out our lives and to what extent that has an affect on others outside our beloved country.

Peace in all your journeys.
