Few & Far Females Reign as Queen Bees for Basel

I’ve been meaning to blog about this great wall ever since Art Basel—sorry it took me so long. Few & Far is a women’s collective with members from across the USA and plans to go global soon. For Art Basel, Primary Flight hooked them up with a very long wall in Wynwood. With artists flying to Miami from East and West coasts to paint together, a lot of pre-planning of colors and concepts was necessary to pull off what turned into a superbly unified effort.

Here’s the scoop on how they did it from L.A.‘s Erin Yoshi, “The mural came about through a collective process. Since native Honey Bees are moving towards extinction in the United States, we understand that this will have a huge impact on our domestic food supply in the future. We wanted to highlight this through our appreciation for Bees. Ksra suggested the honey comb theme, Meme evolved that into a Queen Bees wall for the women’s collective and Mags and Yoshi supported with the color scheme and background concept.

Stuck-Up Opens in Chi-Town

I flew out to Chicago on Friday for DB Burkeman’s art sticker show and book signing just in time for the first big snow of the year. DB has amassed an enormous collection of printed and hand-drawn stickers and thousands are on display at Maxwell Colette Gallery including super-rare ones from Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Banksy, Barry McGee and other legends.

Bobblehead Blade has Arrived!

I received a wonderful surprise package in the mail last week—a Bobbleheaded Blade that looked exactly like the king himself. Since Blade recently relocated to Florida, the bobbling replica in my studio will insure that he will be remembered daily.

You can get one too at Toy Tokyo or Tuff City or order on line at G.A.G. Golden Age of Graffiti. Blade is planning to make a few guest appearances at selected venues in NYC in March so get your bobble on!

Art in the Streets SoWeBo Style

Since 2006 I’ve been documenting a Southwest Baltimore neighborhood called SoWeBo known more for its portrayal in the TV program The Wire than for its art. But some of Baltimore’s earliest graffiti writers such as Shaken began their careers here and are still going strong.

Street art is a novelty here although there are plenty of very inviting walls. Recently Stefan Ways organized a major makeover of Carroll Skate Park. Last weekend I watched Gaia wheat paste a pigeon drawing in an alley that, in fact, has a lot of pigeons. Hopefully other artists will make their way west into this relatively virgin territory. I’ll be keeping my camera ready.

Indoor Skelly Game for Old Fashioned NYC Xmas Gift

For NYCentric folks, here’s an excellent Xmas gift idea. Darryl Jones is selling an indoor version of the street game Skelly. Skelly is a classic NYC game akin to marbles but with flat shooters designed not to roll on cement and asphalt. Kids used to make their own from bottle caps weighted with tar or wax. Skelly boards were mostly drawn with chalk although the Parks Department painted a few on playgrounds and even held official tournaments. I haven’t actually seen anyone playing this for years but in the pre-technology age it used to be popular. Attached are my vintage photos from Brooklyn, Bronx and Lower Eastside taken from 70’s to 90’s. For more info about Skelly (skully, skelsies) check out Street Play

Darryl has managed to patent the game (presumably only his indoor version) and have it manufactured in China. As a longtime fan of street games, I was super surprised to come across him in my hood a couple of days ago at Broadway and 104th.

Miami 80’s Graffiti History Mural Painted on Bakehouse Walls

This year during Art Basel Aurelio Roman Jr. and the Miami Graffiti 80’s Group decided to celebrate Miami’s unique graffiti history by bringing together crews from the 80’s to paint a mural on the Bakehouse Art Complex. The Bakehouse, a former bakery, was the first place to allow writers to paint legally. Back in the day, Miami crews were sometimes at war with each other but in 2011 they put their differences aside and worked together to create a spectacular tribute to early graffiti MIami graf. Former Miami writers came from as far away as California, Texas and New York to paint in traditional 80’s Miami styles and colors. Classic old school characters representing elements of Hip Hop were reproduced from sketches made by the late Sevey Sev of Block Boys & Can Masters crews. The wall was also a memorial to writers who had died, with realistically painted R.I.P. portraits by G Whiz.

Tokyo Tattoo 1970 Exhibit & Book Release with Aiko

In 1970 I was living in Japan trying to get my photography career off the ground. I became fascinated with Japanese tattooing (irezumi) after seeing a traditional tattoo at a festival . With perseverance I was able to meet and photograph the artist Horibun I at work. At the time I hoped to do a magazine article but no editors were interested as tattooing had an unsavory reputation. For over 40 years the photos were buried in my extensive archive of unpublished work.

Like graffiti, tattooing was an underground art that, in 2011, has surfaced and proliferated throughout the world although the tools, techniques, and designs have evolved. I’ve been especially interested to observe the overlapping of graffiti and tattooing. Many tattoo artists began as graffiti writers. I was excited when Dokument in Sweden, the publishers of many graff books including my book, Tag Town, offered to publish my tattoo photos.

This year, Aiko Nakagawa created a magnificent stencil based on one of my photos for my Remix show at Carmichael in LA so we decided to team up for a tattoo show in NYC. Adam Suerte’s Urban Folk Art tattoo studio and gallery was the perfect place for an exhibit and book launch because he’s one of the many tattoo artists who started off as a writer. IRAK Bombs Wynwood

IRAK spent a few days and nights bombing a Wynwood building located a little off the beaten track. Walk south on 2nd Avenue from NW26th Street and you can’t miss it. Only two sides of the building were finished when I left Miami a couple of weeks ago. One was tagged on black in gradations of white, silver, gray and black and the other on white in silver, gray and a bright orange which nicely coordinated with their T-shirts and shorts. Are there any other IRAK tags around Wynwood? Take a guess.

Puttin’ on the Dog with the London Police at Opera Gallery

Bob and Chaz of The London Police celebrated their spectacular new show “Who Cares Wins” at Opera with a singalong medley of dog songs . The Dandy Warhols harmonized with the artists on favorite tunes including Dogs Rule the World, Terminator Dog, Dog in a Box and Kentucky Fried Dog.

TLP’s huge new paintings feature many recognizable NYC buildings, portraits of friends and public figures, hundreds of their iconic LADS characters and even a few dogs. Opera Gallery is at 115 Spring Street.

Remembering 9/11 - Panel & Book Launch

Next week I will participate in a panel discussion about the spontaneous 9/11 memorials and also launch my little book, Remembering 9/11. It’s hard to believe but the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks is upon us. On 9/11 in 2001, I watched television with my mom while on a visit to Baltimore. The shocking sight of people leaping to their death just before the towers crumbled is not something easily forgotten. I remember driving back to the city on September 12th and seeing a cloud of smoke along the New Jersey Turnpike where a view of the towers used to be.

In the aftermath, New Yorkers were willing to donate blood, blankets or anything but there was little anyone could do to be helpful. Along with hundreds of others, I took to the streets with my camera. My focus was the many handmade tributes that people left in memorials around the city—in Union Square, along Canal Street, at the firehouses and in all five boroughs. I also tried to document the spontaneous rituals and ceremonies New Yorkers creative as they came to grips with the attacks.

Although the term “street art” was not widely in use at the time, many of the memorials were just that. People appropriated space on the street for their art. Like street art, the memorials were ephemeral so photography became an easy yet powerful way to preserve, share and remember these poignant tributes. More of my Remembering 9/11 photos here.

Aiko in A-Dam with Laser

I’m finally getting around to editing photos I took last month in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Berlin. First to A-dam for the opening of Aiko’s Unstoppable Waves show at Andenken Gallery. The gallery was started in Colorado by Hyland Mather and Malia Tata who then moved it to the Netherlands in 2008.We had a whirlwind few days including some night bombing by boat along the canals. Liu Bolin Vanishes on 7th Avenue

This afternoon Chinese artist Liu Bolin aka The invisible Man painted himself into a fence hung with hundreds of 9/11 memorial tiles. Tiles for America began on 9/12/2001 just after the attack on the World Trade Center. Liu and his assistants began painting the clothing for the disappearing act in Eli Klein Fine Art gallery where Liu’s show will open on June 29th. Today was Bolin’s final performance in New York City—at least for this trip.

BKC’s East Coast Sticky Sticker Art Show

Saturday James n’ Jerry of Brass Knuckle’s Crew put together a super sticker show. They mounted hundreds of stickers on large panels and exhibited them at the Witzenhausen Gallery in Chelsiea. Unfortunately it was only a one day event but they’re planning on repeating it at more venues soon.

More JR on Grand & Wooster

JR pulled an all nighter working from midnight until 8:00am installing another of his humongous photo murals. Like the Houston Street wall, the image is from his Native American Standing Rock Nation project in North and South Dakota. The location shares a wall with my Shepard Fairey Defiant Youth colab. It also faces the parking lot on Grand directly opposite Henry Chalfant’s fabled studio where writers used to hang out for hours checking out Henry’s latest subway graffiti photos. Another JR installation is around the corner on Wooster.

JR Wheatpastes on Houston Street

French artist/photographer JR and crew spent a few hours in the rain yesterday pasting a gigantic photo of a pair of eyes over Kenny Scharf’s Houston Street mural. In real life the eyes belong to DJ Two Bears who was in New York to help with the installation. The photo was from a series of portraits JR took and pasted up at Standing Rock Nation, a Native American reservation straddling North and South Dakota. If you keep your eyes open you’ll probably spot several more JR works going up around town.

Disappearing Act by Liu Bolin in Scharf Camo

This morning the Chinese artist Liu Bolin was painted into Kenny Scharf’s mural on Houston Street. Liu’s assistants precisely matched the colors and patterns of Kenny’s mural and painted them onto the artist’s khaki fatigues. This piece is part of a “Hiding in New York” series which in turn is part of a worldwide “Hiding in the City” series. Stay tuned for more New York pieces.

The Scharf camouflage project was dreamed up by Wooster Collective’s Marc and Sara Schiller and brought to fruition by gallerist Eli Klein who shows Liu’s work in New York and Goldman Properties, the owner of the Houston Street wall. Kenny Scharf showed up to watch the disappearing act and even painted a stroke or two with a brush although he would have preferred a spray can.

Invisible Man Liu is renown for his ingenious camouflage pieces. You can see photos of many here.

The (S) Files opens at El Museo

S stands for Street in El Museo’s sixth biennial which opened last night. This colorful and lively show has a heavy dose of works influenced by graffiti and street art. Artists we all recognize include Lady Pink, Lee Quinones, the ever-present Cope2 but there are plenty of new names and intriguing materials such as tires, inner tubes, trash, plastic bags, cardboard and old skateboard decks. I thoroughly enjoyed this show, it’s well worth the trip uptown to 104th and Fifth.

Double Header on the Bowery

Two Bowery galleries, both above Houston Street, held openings on successive nights this week. The first was Fab 5 Freddy’s at Gallery 151 on Wednesday followed by Kathy Grayson’s inaugural exhibition of FriendsWithYou at The Hole’s new space. I missed Fred’s opening but was lucky enough to bump into him at The Hole and he gave Aiko and me a private tour. Is NoHo Bowery becoming the new art area?

Dixie Flicks

Cope 2 and Indie decided to recreate the Dixie wall in the Bronx featured in Charlie Ahearn’s film Wild Style. Unfortunately the Dixie Club no longer exists but Cope found another wall not that far away. After checking out their plan with Daze who created the origial art , they substituted “Indie” for “Dixie” using up a batch of Cope’s collectable spray cans in an effort to duplicate the 1982 colors.

“DEDICATED TO ALL DEJECTED DOODLERS DENIED SPACE FOR DUBIOUS FAME” 1949

I recently added these two former 1951 press photos to my vintage photography collection. The location of the photos wasn’t identified but on a hunch I Googled the name in the caption written on the back of one. I found a 1949 NY Times article describing how a building owner named Herman Rodenberger had hired a local artist, Harold Gallagher, to paint a complicated mural so that kids would stop writing their names in chalk and playing handball on his Park Slope wall. In an unusually perceptive move, the design of the wall consisted of a collage of names of neighborhood children and their “club affiliations” such as “Gremlins, Dragons, Nomads, Dudes, and Ivanhoes” and a dedication to Kilroy.

The Times’ piece is from 1949 but the photos are dated 1951 and in them, the wall still looks untouched so the Rodenberger gambit must have paid off. I was born in 1943 and would have been 8 years old in 1949, about the same age as some of the kids in the photos. Might there be anyone still living around Garfield Place who remembers this wall? This is one of the most creative examples of buffing I’ve ever seen.

The notation on the back of this photo called the wall “razzle dazzle”. Razzle dazzle was a camouflage paint scheme used on warships in the first and second Warld Wars. According to a Wikipedia entry, it consisted of “a complex pattern of geometric shapes in contrasting colors, interrupting and intersecting each other. ” On the Brooklyn wall, the razzle dazzle was meant to discourage handball playing. WWII ended in 1945 when the wall’s artist, Harold Gallagher, would have been 39 years old. By incorporating the Kilroy Was Here slogan at the top of the wall into his razzle dazzle design, he referenced the war and connected it to a NYC street kids’ tradition: writing their names. The photos illustrate the impossibility of pinpointing the origins of NY style graffiti.

MoCA Mural’s Steam Engine Coincidence

The actual wood burning steam engine that appears as the central motif in MoCA’s “Birds of a Feather” mural is named Jupiter. The engine came from the west meeting another from the east on May 10, 1869 as the Union and Central Pacific Railroads joined their rails with a golden spike, connecting the tracks of the nation’s first transcontinental railroad. An exact replica of Jupiter is now part of the Golden Spike National Historic Monument in Utah.

A nearly identical original engine still exists in the round house of the B&O train museum in the very neighborhood in Baltimore that I’ve been documenting for the past 5 years. Every fall the museum fires up one or two engines for a steamfest weekend. The trains run for about a mile along the tracks that are the site of the first public railroad in the US.

Last fall the oldest operating steam engine in the US, the William Mason, a Jupiter lookalike, steamed along those tracks. It looked incongruous with the surroundings, a neighborhood featured in the TV show, The Wire. I was completely surprised when I saw the image of the train taking shape on MoCA’s wall having just seen an identical one in action. Images of all three below.

MoCA Mural: Birds of a Feather by Lee Quinones & A-Team

Lee Quinones was given the herculean task of deciding what to paint and who would paint it on the huge Geffen Contemporary wall that had been the site of the unfortunate BLU fiasco. He wanted a theme that was “synonymous with the struggle of various movements in the creation of our country since we, as subway writers persevered against the odds.” He put together some sketches in the early morning after he arrived, cleared his basic ideas with MoCA Director Jeffrey Deitch and then assembled his dream team: Abel, Cern, Futura, Loomit, Push, Risk and Sano. In addition to expert artists, he looked for “dudes that could talk the talk and walk the walk” since he knew that they would need to be able to explain and defend themselves to press and critics. After choosing 7 writers to execute the mural, Lee informed them that “You’re in my army now!”

Although the concept was Lee’s, everyone contributed ideas. Some of the writers had special skills, for example Abel who is an airbrush and tattoo artist is good at fine lettering. Loomit turned out to be a feather specialist and even had a customized brush on hand for painting them. Cern loves to paint birds. Push’s signature abstract forms represented the writers and echoed a design element in the Cherokee headdress.

Shunning the obvious symbols of graffiti such as subway cars and spray paint cans, Lee embraced Sano’s idea to paint the historic engine Jupiter, one of the two trains that met in Utah in 1868 to lay the final piece of track to complete the first US transcontinental railway. Lee sees trains as the ultimate “tool of war”, the vehicle that brought forth the global subway art movement. He felt that the Art in the Streets exhibition at MoCA was a similarly celebratory moment, joining East and West both in the US and worldwide after many years of struggle.

Arrows figure prominently in the mural’s symbolism. An arrow can pierce or give direction and a sense of purpose. Native American arrows are wrapped in the Declaration of Independence, “serenading the tools of war for progress.” Graffiti-style arrows billow forth from the train’s smokestack heading toward the quill pen indicating “this is where we’re going.” The pen elegantly inscribes on parchment, “What you write”, a question traditionally used as a sign of respect between writers when they meet. Everything ” fuses and attaches at the point of the pen.”

The ultimate fate of this mural is unclear. It will definitely be up for the duration of the Art in the Streets show through August 8th. After that it will probably be buffed. So if you’re in the area, be sure to walk around to the side of the Geffen Contemporary and spend a little time admiring the skill of the artists and contemplating their theme, “the differences and similarities with other movements.” What’s next for Lee? “I’m looking way beyond the horizon.”

Mode2’s Magnificent MoCA Wall

Mode2 chose chalk over spray paint for his piece at MoCA . Working for a couple of weeks, he had to extend his flight more than once to have time to finish. The result was a dance scene delicately rendered in a controlled palette of reds and oranges on a large wall which stretched across two rooms.

Along the top he painted a quiet tribute to some of his favorites who weren’t included in the show. The names, in case you can’t read them on the photo, are: Backjumps, Bando, Chintz, CTK, CWK, Daze, Delta, Doze, Haze, Jayone, Kase2, Mare139, Newave, Pike, Quik, Ron English, Seen, Shoe, Stash, Teach, Tracy 168. Like a number of other large walls painted for this show, Mode’s work will be destroyed (at least as I understand it) when the exhibition is over.
