It was a historic night for hip hop last night, Canal Room hosted “Hip Hop History Live”, where owner Marcus Linial put three of the most respected East Coast rap groups on the same stage. The crowd had a few young bucks but it was evident that most grew up listening to these MCs since the early 90’s. 12oz was on hand to go down memory lane with Nice & Smooth, Brand Nubian, and Pete Rock & CL Smooth.
Greg Nice & Smooth B warmed up the crowd with their catalogue of hits, unabated to jump into the crowd and rap along with fans. Paying respect, they gave a special shout out to fallen soldier Guru of Gang Starr.
Brand Nubian graced the stage, all draped in ‘Lo and rocking a bottle of Captain Morgan. The bottle emptied as it was ciphered between Grand Puba, Sadat X, Lord Jamar, and DJ Alamo. Puba even showed some love, pouring some Cap into a fan’s cup. It’s Brand Nu baby, it’s Brand Nu!
Pete Rock & CL Smooth closed out the show, dropping gems like “One in a Million”, “Take You There”, and “It’s a Love Thing”. CL proclaimed, “We’re your favorite rappers’ favorite rappers!”, a testament to the longevity of the group and hip hop in general. Having come up at a time when most thought hip hop was just a phase, it was satisfying to see each of these rap groups dispel that belief. The night appropriately ended with the 1992 classic, “They Reminisce Over You”.
